Bangladesh, US Kick off Bilateral Exercise CARAT

US military personnel and Bangladesh Navy (BN) carried out the 27th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) maritime exercise virtually in the Bay of Bengal. The nine-day exercise focuses on a wide range of naval capabilities and includes cooperative actions that demonstrate the US and Bangladesh's capacity to work together to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.
CARAT is to promote regional cooperation and build relationships, according to Bangladesh Navy Fleet Commander Rear Admiral S. M. Abdul Kalam Azad. Since 2011, the Bangladesh Navy has been participating in the CARAT exercise, which celebrated its 27th anniversary in 2021.
CARAT exercise is an annual bilateral exercise. United States Pacific Fleet, a command of the US Navy conducts it with several ASEAN members.
Currently, Exercise CARAT is conducted with navies of nine nations, which are the navies of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

BDL Gets Contract to Service IGLA Manpad

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Indian Army signed a contract worth Rs. 471.41 crore for Refurbishment of IGLA - 1M missiles. After the Refurbishment, a fresh lease of life will be given to the missile for a period of ten years.
The company, in addition to carrying out refurbishment, deals with manufacture and supply of Guided Missiles and associated equipment, Underwater Weapon Systems, Airborne Weapon Systems, Ground Support Equipment and product life cycle support.
In order to give momentum to its efforts towards self-reliance, BDL has also built-up its in-house R&D capabilities primarily focusing on design and engineering activities.

Russia Starts Regular Winter Military Drills in Region Bordering Ukraine

Russia started regular winter military drills in its southern military district, parts of which border Ukraine, and that 10,000 troops had relocated to training grounds across the huge area.
The drills would also take place in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and in a Russian region bordering Donbass, a swath of eastern Ukraine seized by Russian-backed separatists the same year.

Army Receives New Israeli Heron Drones

After a delay of a few months due to COVID-19, the Indian Army's surveillance capabilities have received a major boost as Israel delivered advanced Heron drones under the emergency procurement clause to keep an eye on the Chinese activities in the Ladakh sector.
The acquisition of these drones was done under the emergency financial powers granted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government to the defence forces under which they can buy equipment and systems worth Rs. 500 crores to upgrade their warfighting capabilities, amid ongoing border conflict with China.

Admiral R. Hari Kumar 25th Chief of Indian Naval Staff

Admiral R Hari Kumar took charge as the new chief of the Indian Navy after incumbent Admiral Karambir Singh retired from service. Kumar assumed charge as the 25th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) from outgoing Chief Admiral Karambir Singh who retired on superannuation after a career spanning over 41 years in service.
Admiral Kumar was serving as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command before taking the reins of the force. Born on April 12, 1962, Admiral Kumar was commissioned on January 1, 1983, into the executive branch of the Indian Navy.

IAF Gets Mirage 2000 Fighters from France

Amid tensions on the border, the Indian Air Force received a boost to its fighter jet fleet as two-second hand Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft arrived from France at its Gwalior airbase.
The aircraft would now be upgraded to the latest standards as part of the Mirage upgrade programme going on in the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
The two aircraft were acquired by the Indian Air Force as part of the programme to make up the number of aircraft in the Mirage fighter fleet to around 50.
