Indian Navy Conducted 'Prasthan' an Offshore Security Exercise

  • Indian Navy has conducted 'Prasthan', a structured exercise to evaluate organisational effectiveness in protecting offshore assets off Mumbai on an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) platform 150 km into the sea. 
  • 'Prasthan' is conducted twice a year under the aegis of Headquarters, Western Naval Command. It aims to assess various measures and protocols conceived to address security threats and other contingencies that may arise in offshore oil production platforms. 
  • Partner agencies such as the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, ONGC, Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA), the police, fisheries, and customs activated their emergency procedures to deal with the contingencies.

DRDO Launches Testing, Evaluation Facility for Sonar Systems of Indian Navy

  • Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO) launched the Hull Module of the Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterization & Evaluation (SPACE) facility at Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) Kochi. It is a state-of-the-art testing and evaluation facility for sonar systems developed for use by the Indian navy onboard various platforms which include ships, submarines, and helicopters.

  • The SPACE facility is based on the concept, design and requirements projected by NPOL and has been constructed by L&T Shipbuilding, Chennai. This will be mainly utilized for evaluating sonar systems, allowing for quick deployment and easy recovery of scientific packages such as sensors and transducers.
  • SPACE is a one-of-a-kind facility in the world. The uniqueness of this facility lies in the specially designed submersible platform, which can be lowered up to depths of 100 meters using a series of synchronously operated winches.

Japan, US Hold Joint Arms Drills amid China, North Korea Worry

  • Japan and the United States began a major joint military exercise in southern Japan as the allies aim to step up readiness in the face of China's increasing assertiveness and North Korea's intensifying missile launches.
  • The biennial "Keen Sword" drills kicked off at a Japanese air base in southern Japan and will also be held in several other locations in and around Japan through November 19.
  • About 26,000 Japanese and 10,000 American troops, as well as 30 vessels and 370 aircraft from both sides, are participating in the drills.

Indian Army Launches Single Window Facility for Welfare, Grievance Redressal of Army Wives

  • Taking yet another step in leveraging technology, the Indian Army launched a single window facility "Veerangana Sewa Kendra" (VSK) for welfare and grievances redressal of army wives.
  • The project was inaugurated by President Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) at the premises of the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans (DIAV) premises located at Delhi Cantt.
  • Veerangana Sewa Kendra (VSK) will be available as a service to the Indian Army Veterans Portal www.indianarmyveterans.gov.in. The system caters for registering grievances with tracking, monitoring and regular feedback to the applicant.

Air Force Chief Flies in Rafale during Military Exercise with France

  • Showcasing the defence and bilateral ties between the two countries, Indian Air Force (IAF) Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari flew in a Rafale fighter jet, while French Air chief Gen Stephane Mille flew in an Indian Russian-origin IAF Su-30MKI fighter during 'Garuda VII' bilateral exercise in Jodhpur.
  • The ongoing Ex Garuda VII between Indian Air Force (IAF) and the French Air and Space Force (FASF) will conclude on November 12.
  • Ex Garuda VII is also the first occasion for the LCA Tejas and the recently inducted LCH Prachand to participate in any international exercise. The exercise includes four FASF Rafale fighters and one A-330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft.
