Nepal-India Hold Joint Military Exercise 'Surya Kiran'

  • Nepal and India started the 16th edition of Surya Kiran, the joint military training exercise between the two South Asian nations.
  • The exercise, which focuses on counter-terrorism, martial arts, humanitarian aid, natural disasters, environmental protection, is taking place at the Integrated Military Training Centre in Saljhandi, Rupandehi district, Nepal.
  • According to the Nepal Army, the Surya Kiran is a 14-day long joint training based on counter-insurgency operations in the jungle and mountainous terrain.
  • Both armies familiarize themselves with each other's weapons, equipment, tactics, techniques and operating procedures in a counter-insurgency environment.
  • It will conclude on December 29.

Amid Border Tensions with China, India Successfully Tests Agni V Missile

  • India successfully conducted night trial of nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni V, which is capable of hitting targets beyond 5,000 kilometres with very high level of accuracy.
  • The test was carried out to validate new technologies and equipment on the missile that are now lighter than before.
  • This was the latest test in the Agni missile series, and defence sources added that the trial proved the ability to augment the range of the Agni V missile.
  • The missile test firing was conducted from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast.

India-Kazakhstan Joint Training Exercise 'Kazind-22' Begins at Umroi, Meghalaya

  • The 6th edition of Indo – Kazakhstan joint training exercise "Kazind-22" is being conducted at Umroi (Meghalaya) from 15 to 28 December 2022. The scope of this exercise involves a Command Post Exercise (CPX) at the Battalion level and Company level Field Training Exercise (FTX) on sub-conventional operations. During the exercise, participants will engage in variety of missions ranging from joint planning, joint tactical drills, basics of special arms skills, HADR and raiding a hostile target.
  • Joint annual training exercise with the Kazakhstan Army was instituted in 2016 as Exercise Prabal Dostyk, which was later upgraded to a company level exercise and renamed as Ex Kazind in 2018.

US Space Force's First Overseas Base in South Korea

  • The US Space Force launched its first foreign command in South Korea.
  • As per reports, the new unit will help the US monitor security threats from North Korea, Russia and China.
  • The facility is the first of its kind outside American soil since the creation of the US Space Force in 2019.
  • Its opening was marked in a ceremony at Osan Air Base, 40 miles (65 kilometres) south of Seoul, where the unit will be based.
  • The US Space Force - the newest branch of the US military in more than 70 years - was launched three years ago as a way to protect American assets in space, including hundreds of satellites used for communication and surveillance.

IAF Decides to Allow Women Officers to Join its Garud Commando Force

  • The Indian Air Force has allowed women officers to join its special forces unit, the Garud commando force, to promote gender equality within its ranks, provided they meet the criteria for selection.
  • The decision to allow women into the elite wing was taken last year.
  • The special forces of the army, navy and air force consist of some of the toughest soldiers who undergo rigorous training, are capable of mounting a swift and stealthy response in denied territories, and have thus far been a male preserve. Soldiers are not directly assigned to special forces units, and have to volunteer for it.
  • The air force raised the Garud commando force in 2004. The move came three years after four terrorists, armed with Kalashnikovs and grenades, attempted to force their way into the its Awantipora fighter base near Srinagar in broad daylight. They were all killed.

Indian Navy to Create Marcos Unit for Women

  • In a historic move, the Indian Navy decided to allow women to be part of its elite special forces the Marine Commandos (Marcos). The historical move will allow women serve as commandos in any of the three defence services.
  • No one in the Navy is directly assigned to Special Forces units and they have to volunteer for it.
  • Both women officers and sailors who join the Navy as Agniveers next year will have the option to volunteer to become Marcos.
  • The Army, Navy and Air Force have Special Forces comprising the toughest soldiers who have to undergo rigorous training to be able to conduct a swift and stealthy response in denied territories. Until now, only men were allowed to be part of the Special Forces.
  • One of these Special Forces in the Navy is the Marine Commandos or Marcos.
  • The Indian Navy raised the Marcos in 1987. Initially, they were named the Indian Marine Special Forces (IMSF). However, in 1991, the Navy changed the name to "sabotage forces of the marines" – Marine Commando Force (MCF), who are also known as Marcos in short.
