Defence Ministry's iDEX-DIO Signs its 150th Innovation Contract

The Defence Ministry signed the 150th contract for defence innovation under a framework called "iDEX" that was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.
Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) is the flagship initiative of the Department of Defence Production and it was rolled out to encourage start-ups and other such entities engaged in defence innovation.
The 150th contract was signed by Joint Secretary (Defence Industries Production) & Additional CEO/DIO Anurag Bajpai with CEO, Altair Infrasec Pvt Ltd Anil Anand in the presence of Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and other senior civil & military officials of Ministry of Defence in New Delhi on 21 December, 2022.

Indian Navy Launches INS Arnala, First Ship of ASW SWC Project

The Indian Navy launched 'Arnala', the first of the eight indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW-SWC), at the shipbuilding facility of L&T in Chennai's Kattupalli.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), 'Arnala' made its first contact with the water of the Bay of Bengal at the launch ceremony presided over by Rasika Chaube, financial adviser (defence services) of the defence ministry.
The ship has been named 'Arnala' to signify the strategic maritime importance accorded to the island of Arnala, located about 13 kilometres north of Vasai, Maharashtra, by Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The contract for building eight ASW-SWC ships was signed between the defence ministry and GRSE, Kolkata, in April 2019.
The 'Arnala' class of ships will replace the 'Abhay' class ASW ships of the Indian Navy. These are designed to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters and low-intensity maritime operations (LIMO), including subsurface surveillance in littoral waters.

Indian Navy Gets 5th Scorpene-class Submarine Vagir

The Indian Navy received the fifth scorpene-class submarine Vagir ahead of its planned commissioning next month. The induction of the submarine, built under Project-75, is set to bolster the Indian Navy's combat capability.
India has been focusing on shoring up its maritime capability with a focus on the Indian Ocean in the backdrop of concerns over China's growing forays into the region, considered the backyard of the Indian Navy.
Project-75 includes the indigenous construction of six submarines of Scorpene design.
The submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai in collaboration with the Naval Group of France.

BSF Deploys Women Guards in Sundarbans on India-Bangladesh Border

In a major step symbolizing women's empowerment, Border Security Force (BSF) South Bengal Frontier for the first time deployed Mahila Praharis to protect the international border passing through the marshy and inaccessible Sundarbans area surrounded by vast dense forests and rivers.
Securing borders in mighty Sundarbans spread over hundreds of square kilometres along the India-Bangladesh border in the North and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal is challenging.
The smuggling of cattle, drugs and infiltration from this region has been a continuous major problem. As the construction of land border outposts (BOP) is not feasible in the area, BSF maintains a round-the-clock vigil through floating BOPs.
This is the first time in the history of BSF that a platoon of Mahila Praharis has been deployed for border patrolling and operation of a Floating BOP in difficult terrain like the Sunderbans. Their deployment will be especially helpful in preventing smuggling by women smugglers.

Rajnath Singh Commissions Stealth-guided Missile Destroyer INS Mormugao

INS Mormugao, a P15B stealth-guided missile destroyer, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in Mumbai. INS Mormugao was commissioned in the presence of Defence minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, Navy chief Admiral R. Hari Kumar and other dignitaries.
The ship is 163 metres long and 17 metres wide, displaces 7400 tonnes when fully loaded and has a maximum speed of 30 knots. Apart from myriad indigenous equipment in the 'Float' and 'Move' categories, the destroyer is also installed with under-mentioned major indigenous weapons. The overall indigenous content of the project is approximately 75 per cent.
The keel of Mormugao was laid in June 2015 and the ship was launched on September 17, 2016. The design has largely maintained the hull form, propulsion machinery, a lot of platform equipment and major weapons and sensors.
