Sambo Lapung Scripts National Record

Lifter Sambo Lapung scripted a new National record of 188 kg in clean and jerk on his way to take the gold medal in men's 89 kg in the National Weightlifting Championships at the Khudiram Anusilan Kendra in Kolkata.
Lapung, who had secured the silver medal in 81 kg in 2019, hoisted 145 kg to take a one kg lead over R.V. Rahul in snatch. Later, he broke the clean and jerk record of 187 kg in his final attempt to aggregate 333 kg.
Hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, Lapung – a former National champion in 69 kg – won a National title after four years.

Visa Issues Cloud Asian Wrestling Meet

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is under pressure to expedite the process of granting visas to participating nations for the upcoming Asian Championships from February 18 to 23 at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex. This includes granting visas to the Chinese wrestling team, as well as to wrestlers from Pakistan.
United World Wrestling (UWW), the world governing body in wrestling, has warned the Indian federation that all participating nations need to be given visas, or else India may be penalised by being barred from the Asian Olympic qualifier scheduled in March in China. As per UWW bidding rules, it's mandatory for hosts to ensure all participating countries get visas for a tournament. UWW has also written to the Bulgarian federation to allow Chinese athletes to participate in the World Olympic qualifiers, the last qualifying event, from April 30 to May 3 at Sofia.

India into Under-19 Cricket World Cup Final

India thumped the arch-rivals Pakistan in the first semi-final of the ongoing Under-19 World Cup in South Africa. The boys in blue dominated throughout and kept the opposition under the lid. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the star of the day with the bat as he smashed an unbeaten century as India chased down 173 comfortably without even losing a single wicket and with more than 14 overs to spare.

Rohit Ruled Out of New Zealand Tour

In a blow to India, Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the upcoming ODI and Test series against New Zealand after sustaining a calf injury during the fifth T20 International in Mount Maunganui.
Going by the pecking order, Mayank Agarwal is likely to be the reserve opener in the ODI format just like during the home ODIs against the West Indies. However, Shubman Gill, with a double hundred in the ongoing A series Tests against New Zealand A, is also back in the mix.

Fati Youngest to Net La Liga Brace

Barcelona's teenage star Ansu Fati set another scoring record when he became the youngest player to get two goals in a Spanish league game.
Fati struck from a pair of passes by Lionel Messi to help Barcelona beat Levante 2-1, keeping the defending champion within three points of leader Real Madrid. Fati got his record brace at the age of 17 years, 94 days. That beat the previous mark established by then Malaga striker Juan Miguel Jiménez in 2010 at 17 years, 115 days.

Under-19 World Cup 2020: India's Road to the Semi-finals

Four-time champions India will back themselves to reach their third successive final at the U-19 World Cup when they face arch-rivals Pakistan.
Both teams go into the semi-finals unbeaten. While India beat Australia in the quarter-finals, Pakistan outplayed Afghanistan.
The last time Pakistan beat India at the U19 World Cup was way back in 2010 and the Rohail Nazir-led side will look to end their losing streak and also prevent India from reaching their third successive final at the U19 World Cup.

Novak Djokovic endured a fierce challenge to his Melbourne Park reign before overhauling Dominic Thiem 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 in a thriller to clinch an eighth Australian Open crown and reclaim the world number one ranking.

India Pulls Off a rare T20I Series Whitewash

In a rare feat, the Indian cricket team registered a 5-0 series whitewash against New Zealand with a seven-run win in the fifth and final T20 International at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
The tourists choked the Black Caps yet again to turn it around for a victory and a series clean sweep in the shortest format after setting a 164-run target for the hosts to chase.
This is only the third time that India has whitewashed opponents in away T20 series and the first time in a five-match series. India had blanked the West Indies 3-0 in 2019 and beat Australia 3-0 in 2016.

NADA Apologises after Goof-up in Wrestler's Doping Case

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) apologised for wrongly attributing a wrestler caught for doping as a U-23 World Championships medallist.
Wrestler Ravinder Kumar was banned for four years for failing a dope test, but the NADA created confusion by identifying him as a World U-23 silver medallist which was not the case.
It was Ravinder Dahiya — not Ravinder Kumar — who had won a silver medal in the U-23 World Championships last year. Ravinder Dahiya said that he had not been tested by the NADA.

BCCI Names Madan Lal and R. P. Singh in Cricket Advisory Committee

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the appointment of its three-member Cricket Advisory Committee.
The committee comprises Madan Lal, Rudra Pratap Singh and Sulakshana Naik.
The term of appointment will be for one year.
The CAC's immediate task will be to pick replacements for outgoing selectors MSK Prasad and Gagan Khoda.

India vs New Zealand 4th T20

Team India scripted history as they thumped New Zealand in Super Over to take a 4-0 series lead in five-match series at Westpac Stadium in Wellington. Virat Kohli and his troops had earlier won the third T20I in similar fashion and this is the first time in history that two successive matches have ended in a tie, let alone victories for a team in back-to-back Super Overs.
Chasing 166, New Zealand were coasting at one stage before the hosts imploded to be restricted to 165/7. Needing 7 runs off Shardul Thakur's last over, the Kiwis buckled under pressure and lost four wickets as India took the match into the Super Over for the second consecutive game.
The Kiwis scored 13 runs in the Super Over giving India a target of 14 runs. Rahul hit a 6 and a boundary (4) in the first two balls, respectively. Kohli smashed a boundary (4) in the fifth ball to seal India's victory.

Australian Open 2020

Dominic Thiem defeated German Alexander Zverev and made his first Australian Open final, booking a showdown with seven-time champion Novak Djokovic. The 26-year-old fifth seed, the first player from Austria ever to reach the Melbourne decider, battled past seventh-ranked Zverev 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/4). Defending champion Djokovic awaits him after the second seed ended Roger Federer's dreams in straight sets to make his eighth Melbourne Park final.
Thiem has his work cut out against the Serb who is on a 12-match unbeaten streak this season and has won all seven of the Australian Open deciders he has contested.
