India to Host 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup

India will host the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup. India was awarded the tournament by the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) Women's Committee.
It was felt that India, which will also host the FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup later this year, was best placed among the three bidders — Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan were the other competing candidates — to maximise the promotion of the women's game.
The venues proposed by India — D.Y. Patil Stadium, Trans Stadia Arena and Fatorda Stadium — are also being used in the FIFA tournaments.

Venues for FIFA U-17 Women's WC Announced

The stage is set for the future stars of women's football as the match schedule and host cities for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2020™ were unveiled by FIFA and the Local Organising Committee (LOC), alongside the Official Slogan for the tournament.
Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Kolkata and Navi Mumbai have been confirmed as the five host cities of the tournament.
Sixteen teams featuring the rising stars of women's football will compete across 32 matches to lift the coveted trophy in Navi Mumbai on 21st November.
Kick Off The Dream™ was unveiled as official slogan.

NADA Bans Javelin Thrower Amit Dahiya for Four Years

The Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) has passed an order to National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) to ban javelin thrower Amit Dahiya for four years for sending wrong sample collection and trying to cheat officials during the 2^nd National Javelin throw open Championship 2019 held at Sonipat in Haryana.
Amit Dahiya finished 3rd in 2019 National Javelin throw open Championship and the National Anti-Doping Agency officials asked him to furnish the dope sample but he instead sent another person sample collection.
NADA temporarily banned him for violating rule 2.3 of NADA anti-doping rules on July 16, 2019 and presented the case to ADDP in January 2020.

T20 Mumbai League Franchisees Threaten to Boycott

All eight owners of the T20 Mumbai have threatened to pull out of the local league in case Probability Sports - which has been handed the responsibility to plan, market and conduct the league by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) - continues to be involved in the league.
Representatives of all the eight owners had a meeting with MCA president Vijay Patil at the MCA club in Bandra-Kurla Complex. The eight team owners submitted a joint letter to Patil, asking him to intervene and ensure smooth conduct of the event.
Probability Sports - a firm jointly formed by IIFL and Wizcraft only for T20 Mumbai's conduct - has been handed over a five-year deal for the conduct of the league by MCA. While MCA is paid an undisclosed annual sum - around Rs. 3 crore per annum - for five years, Probability Sports virtually runs the league. For the inaugural edition, the six franchisees had entered into a bilateral agreement with Probability Sports.

Sunil Kumar Wins Gold in Asian Wrestling Greco-Roman Championship

Sunil Kumar became the first Indian wrestler in 27 years to win a Greco-Roman gold at the Asian Wrestling Championships. Sunil defeated Azat Salidinov of Kyrgyzstan 5-0 to clinch the 87 kg title after a come-from-behind win in his semi-final bout.
The last Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win gold at the Asian Championships was Pappyu Yadav who won the 48 kg title in 1993.
Earlier, Sunil on his way to the final made an impressive comeback in the semi-final bout. He came back from 1-8 down to win the bout 12-8.
Arjun Halakurki (55 kg) won bronze after beating Donghyeok Won of Korea.

Golf Great Mickey Wright Passes Away

One of the most successful women's golfers of all time, Mickey Wright, died at the age of 85.
The American won 13 majors and 82 LPGA Tour titles to sit second on the all-time women's major list behind countrywoman Patty Berg (15), who died in 2006.
Wright was the dominant force in golf in the late 1950s and 1960s, winning four US Women's Opens and four Women's PGA Championships among her major haul.
She retired at the age of 34 in 1969.

Former Manchester United and Northern Ireland Goalkeeper Dies

Harry Gregg was an outstanding club and international goalkeeper, but he will best be remembered for his bravery in the 1958 Munich air disaster.
The Northern Ireland player signed for Manchester United just two months before the tragedy, in which 23 people died.
Gregg is often referred to as the 'Hero of Munich' after pulling passengers free from the burning wreckage.
Two weeks later, Gregg kept a clean sheet as Manchester United put Sheffield Wednesday out of the FA Cup.
The goalkeeper was determined that the tragic event would not define his career, or indeed his life.
Henry Gregg was born on 27th October 1932 in the County Londonderry village of Tobermore.

Khelo University Games Anthem Launched

The Khelo India University Games (KIUG) anthem was launched by Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju at a function held at his residence. Sung, written and composed by former Haryana Ranji Trophy batsman Padamjeet Sehrawat, the peppy number exhorts the youth to participate in sports with an aim to shine and move ahead.
As per Kiren Rijiju, we have to have a structured format to improve Indian sport and the Khelo India University Games (starting February 22) is a step in that direction.
The KIUG will have 17 disciplines with 3399 athletes from 159 universities slated to participate.
Indian Oil Corporation is the main sponsor.

Motto of 2020 Tokyo Olympics Announced

'United by Emotion' was revealed as the motto for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics as organisers look to hammer home the message of diversity and inclusion.
Tennis player Naomi Osaka, who was born in Japan to a Haitian father and Japanese mother but raised in the United States, narrated the motto's promotional video.
The motto will be displayed on the iconic Tokyo Skytree, the Japanese capital's tallest landmark, from Monday until March 25, the day before the torch relay begins.
Some 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries will gather in Tokyo for the Olympics, which run from July 24 to August 9, 2020.

Faf du Plessis Steps Down as South Africa Captain across All Formats

South Africa's Faf du Plessis announced that he is stepping down from captaincy in both Tests and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) effective immediately to allow a new generation of leaders to develop in the side. The 35-year-old had already admitted earlier this year that he was not looking at his future in international cricket beyond the T20 World Cup in Australia in October.
Du Plessis's decision came a month after he had stepped down from the One-day International captaincy. Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock, who was named South Africa's ODI captain last month, is the front-runner to fill in his boots.

India Wins Eleven Medals at Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting

India claimed five silver and six bronze medals at the ongoing 2020 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
K.V.L. Pavani Kumari (45 kg) won silver medals in both youth girls and junior women section, while Sidhanta Gogoi (61 kg) claimed silver in youth boys and junior men events after lifting a total of 145 and 269 kg respectively.
Mukund Aher (49 kg) then clinched a silver in youth boys category with a lift of 189 kg. Harshada Goud (45 kg) clinched two bronze medals with a lift of 139 kg in youth girls and junior women events.
Other lifters to win bronze medals are Boni Manghkya (55 kg), Ch Nirmala Devi (59 kg), S. Gurunaidu (49 kg) and Golom Tinku (55 kg).
A total of 197 athletes from 20 Asian countries are participating in the event.

India to Host 16-team FIH Junior Men's World Cup 2021

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced India as the host for the FIH Junior Men's World Cup 2021. In an official announcement, the international governing body also announced that the competition will be played towards the end of 2021.
The competition, which features the best young U-21 level talent from across the world, will again be heading to India, which won accolades from around the world for hosting one of the best FIH Senior Men's Hockey World Cups in 2018 held at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium, Bhubaneswar.
After having hosted the FIH Junior Men's World Cup in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh in 2016, where India lifted the coveted trophy, India will again be hosting the biggest Junior-level competition in hockey. The FIH Junior Men's World Cup will see a total of 16 teams compete for the title, out of which six will be from Europe, four from Asia including host India, two from Africa, two from Oceania and two from Pan America.

No Chinese Participation in Asian Wrestling Championships

China would not be present at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships. The biggest gainers would be the Indian women in the competition.
Although there has been no official word from the government, the 40-member Chinese contingent had not been provided visas with no further development on the issue. China has been facing an epidemic outbreak of the novel Coronavirus.
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials admitted health concerns had led to the decision. Several participating nations had also asked for clarity on China's participation and had even expressed reservations about coming in case Chinese wrestlers were entered. It is a global concern right now and we cannot take any risks with the health of wrestlers. Sports is after all meant for fitness.

Bhawana Makes the Cut for Tokyo

Bhawana Jat qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 20 km race walk event after pulling off a shock win with a national record time at the National Championships at Ranchi.
The 23-year-old athlete, who hails from a poor farmer's family at Kabra village in Rajasthan's Rajsamand district, clocked 1 hour 29 minutes and 54 seconds, well inside the Olympic qualification time of 1:31:00, to win the gold.

Joshua Cheptegei Smashes 5km Road World Record

Uganda's world 10,000m champion Joshua Cheptegei broke the 5km road world record by 27 seconds in Monaco.
The 23-year-old ran 12 minutes 51 seconds to smash the previous record, set by Kenya's Rhonex Kipruto en route to victory at January's Valencia 10k.
France's Jimmy Gressier finished second in Monaco with a European record of 13:18.

Bopanna-Shapovalov in Semi-finals

India's Rohan Bopanna and his Canadian partner Denis Shapovalov advanced to the men's doubles semi-finals of the ABN Amro World tennis tournament with an impressive win over fourth seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau.
The unseeded Indo-Canadian combine beat the Romanian-Dutch pairing of Tecau and Rojer 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 in a quarter-final.
They next meet the winners of the quarter-final between Henri Kontinen and Jan-Lennard Struff, and, Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski.

Injuries May Leave No Indian Gymnast Competing in Tokyo

India's chances of sending a gymnast to the Tokyo Olympics, starting July 24, is all but over, with top athlete Dipa Karmakar yet to recover from her injuries as the Olympic qualification process heads towards its conclusion. Karmakar aggravated her knee injury in March 2019 at the Baku World Cup.
"Dipa hasn't started training. She is going through rehabilitation.
No Indian gymnast will compete at the world cup series starting February 20 at Melbourne. The world cup series comprises four tournaments—the last one is in March in Germany—the best performers from which will get a spot at the 2020 Games.
