Jorden Van Foreest Wins Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021

Jorden Van Foreest pulled off one of the great shocks in Tata Steel history in winning the 83rd event and becoming the first Dutch winner since Jan Timman in 1985. Van Foreest and Anish Giri drew the two blitz tie-break games, then there was a final Armageddon tie-break where Van Foreest had draw odds - he won on time in the end. As 11th seed Van Foreest was on no-one's list of potential winners but he was well prepared and solid. Earlier he beat Nils Grandelius in a very fine game indeed with a vicious new idea against the Najdorf Sicilian. Giri had his own troubles and was in severe danger of losing to David Anton for much of the final round before fighting back to draw in the end.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Takes over as President of ACC

Jay Shah, the incumbent Secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been appointed as the new President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). He is the youngest person ever to be appointed to the office. He replaces Nazmul Hussain, Chief of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) who was the previous chief of the ACC.
The ACC is Asia's regional administrative body and it currently consists of 24 member associations. ACC is responsible for organizing the Asia Cup tournaments. The 2020 edition of the Asia Cup was postponed to June this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pakistan was to originally host the tournament but the tournament is now expected to be held in either Sri Lanka or Bangladesh.

MS Dhoni Becomes First Cricketer to Earn This Massive Salary

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the first player to earn Rs. 150 crore salary from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni has become the first player – India or foreign – to achieve this mark when it comes salary in the T20 franchise league.
Dhoni is all set to lead for at least one more season with the Chennai Super Kings in the in IPL 2021 after announcing his retirement from international cricket last year. This means Dhoni will earn another salary cheque of Rs. 15 crore to his total IPL salary and will become the first players to breach Rs. 150 crore salary mark.
At present Dhoni's contract with CSK is worth whopping Rs. 15 crore and he has till date earned Rs. 137.8 crore with CSK and Rising Pune Supergiants. With CSK deciding to retain him for Rs. 15 crore in IPL 2021, Dhoni has crossed Rs. 150-crore salary mark in IPL and will become the first player to do so.

First Zanskar Winter Sports and Youth Festival Concludes

In Kargil Ladakh, the first ever Zanskar Winter Sports and Youth Festival, 2021 concluded at Munskit Chumik Zanskar.
Member of Parliament (MP) Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal was the chief guest on the occasion while Councillor Cha Constituency Stanzin Lakpa was guest of honor.
MP Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal appreciated the UT Administration Ladakh, local departments, Zanskar Buddhist Association, Zanskar Gonpa Association, Zanskar Muslim Association and other concerned agencies and individuals for their efforts in the successful conduct of the whole event.
This event has been initiated with a huge vision to promote winter sports and tourism in Zanskar.

Tamil Nadu Wins Syed Mushtaq Champions

Tamil Nadu produced an impressive batting display after left-arm spinner M. Siddarth's four-wicket haul as they lifted the coveted Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy after defeating Baroda by seven wickets in the final.
This was Tamil Nadu's second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy triumph.

BCCI Not to Hold Ranji Trophy for First Time in 87 Years

The BCCI will not be conducting its premier first-class domestic tournament Ranji Trophy for the first time in 87 years as the parent body opted for the Vijay Hazare Trophy as per the wishes of a majority of the state units.
- The BCCI will also host the U-19 National One Day tournament for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and the Women's national 50-over tournament as per a letter sent by BCCI secretary Jay Shah to the state units.
- While BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Shah were keen to have the blue riband tournament that pays the maximum match fee (Rs 1.5 lakh per game approx) to the players, it is understood that a two-month-long bio-bubble even for a truncated two-phased Ranji Trophy in times of the COVID-19 pandemic wasn't feasible.

P. V. Sindhu Loses in World Tour Finals Opener

World champion shuttler P. V. Sindhu went down fighting against world number one Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwan in the opening Group 'B' women's singles match of the USD 1.5 million HSBC BWF World Tour Finals in Bangkok.
A week after a demoralising defeat at the Toyota Thailand Open quarter finals, Sindhu produced a much improved performance but still lost to Tzu Ying 21-19 12-21 17-21 in a 59-minute match. It was Sindhu's 16th defeat to Tzu Ying in 21 meetings.
Olympic silver medallist Sindhu, who had won the prestigious title in 2018, will next play home favourites Ratchanok Intanon, who had handed her a humiliating defeat last week.

Abu Dhabi T10 Begins

Abu Dhabi T10 is the world's only ten-over cricket tournament officially sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
It is the first-ever internationally approved ten-over format competition. The second edition of Abu Dhabi T10 will be held from 28th January – 6th February 2021.
Matches have a 10-over-a-side format and duration of 45 minutes a side totalling 90 minutes of play. The tournament is played over ten days, with a round-robin followed by semi-finals and the final.

Florida Offers to Replace Tokyo as Olympics Host

Florida's chief financial officer has asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to consider relocating the 2021 Games to the Sunshine State amid speculation that Tokyo organisers may back out as hosts due to concerns about the COVID-19 outbreak.
Tokyo organisers have vowed to press ahead with the re-scheduled Games, which are due to open on July 23 after being postponed for a year because of the novel coronavirus, but Florida's Jimmy Patronis has offered an alternative option.
There is still time to deploy a site selection team to Florida to meet with statewide and local officials on holding the Olympics in the Sunshine State.
