Seiko Hashimoto takes over as Tokyo Olympic President

Seiko Hashimoto appeared in seven Olympics — four Winter Olympics and three Summer Olympics. According to historian Dr. Bill Mallon, her seven appearances is the most by any "multi-season" athlete in the games.
Hashimoto made even more history in Japan, where women are still rare in the boardrooms and positions of political power.
The 56-year-old Hashimoto was named as president of the Tokyo Olympic organising committee after a meeting of its male-dominated executive board. She replaces 83-year-old Yoshiro Mori, a former Japanese prime minister who was forced to resign after making sexist comments about women.

Rafael Nadal Crashes Out of Australian Open

World number 2 tennis player Rafael Nadal crashed out of the Australian Open. The Spaniard lost to Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Australian Open quarter-finals at Melbourne Park.
The historic match witnessed Stefanos Tsitsipas recovering from two sets down to stun 20-times Grand Slam champion. Tsitsipas beat Nadal 3-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4, 7-5.
The fifth seed also became the only third man to have rallied from two sets down to beat Rafael at a Grand Slam.

Odisha CM Lays Foundation stone of India's Largest Hockey Stadium in Rourkela

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone of India's largest hockey stadium in the steel city of Rourkela that would be finished on time before the next edition of men's Hockey World Cup in 2023.
Patnaik announced that the proposed international hockey stadium, with a seating capacity of more than 20,000 people, would be named after freedom fighter Birsa Munda.
The stadium will be a model of green, functional, cost-effective design. Designed to deliver the best match-day atmospheres in the world, each seat will have uninterrupted sightlines and the spectators will be closer to the pitch than at any other hockey stadium in the world.

Olympics Boxing Qualification Event Cancelled

A global boxing qualifying tournament for the Tokyo Olympics has been cancelled and a European event was postponed from April to June.
The International Olympic Committee said that plans were changed because of current challenges to international travel and related restrictions in many countries during the coronavirus pandemic.
Boxers worldwide were to compete for 53 places in the Tokyo lineup at a tournament in Paris in June. Those places will now be allocated equally across continents by world rankings based on results since 2017.
Olympics entries from Africa and the Asia-Oceania region will now be allocated by rankings while boxers in the Americas and Europe can still earn qualifying places in the ring.

R. Ashwin Becomes 1st Bowler to Dismiss Left-handers 200 Times in Tests

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became the first player in the 143-year history of Test cricket to take 200 wickets against left-handed batsmen.
He achieved the feat during the second day of India's second Test against England here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, his home ground.
Fast bowler Stuart Broad was the 200th left-hander to be dismissed by Ashwin.
Ashwin has picked 391 wickets in his career so far and 51.2 percent of his scalps have come against left-handers. His bowling average against left-handers is 19.55 and 31.24 against right-handed batsmen.

Priyanka Goswami Shatters National Record in Women's 20 km Walk

Three Indian race walkers qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics during the National Open Race Walking Championships, with Sandeep Kumar and Priyanka Goswami shattering national records in the men's and women's 20 km events respectively.
The National Open Race Walking Championships are the first major athletics event after the end of a COVID-19 lockdown, which had caused the entire domestic calendar to be wiped out last season.
With the three new entrants, the total number of Indian race walkers who have qualified for the Tokyo Games has swelled to five as KT Irfan (men's 20 km) and Bhawana Jat (women's 20 km) have already made the cut earlier.

Ashwin Becomes Second Highest Wicket-taker in Tests in India

Senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed Harbhajan Singh to become the second highest wicket-taker in Tests played in India.
Ashwin got past Harbhajan, who took 265 wickets at an average of 28.76, by dismissing Ben Stokes with a perfect off-spinner on the second day of the second Test against England here. Ashwin's average is 22.67.
Spin legend Anil Kumble is the leading wicket-taker in India with 350 scalps at 24.88. He is also India's leading wicket-takers in tests with 619 scalps to his game.
Harbhajan is third in the standings with 417 wickets and Ashwin, who is inching towards the 400-wicket mark, is fourth. The legendary Kapil Dev is second with 434 wickets.
