Mary Kom, P.V. Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu and Gagan Narang Elected in IOA Athletes Commission

  • Olympic medallists MC Mary Kom, P.V. Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu and Gagan Narang were among 10 eminent sportspersons elected as members of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Athletes Commission.
  • All the 10 elected members of the apex body, five men and as many women, won unopposed in the polls.
  • Winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan, table tennis player Sharath Kamal, women's hockey captain Rani Rampal, fencer Bhavani Devi, rower Bajrang Lal and former shot putter Om Prakash Singh Karhana are the other six members of the elected panel. All of them are Olympians.

Kenyan Runner Renju Gets Five Years Doping Ban

  • Keneth Kiprop Renju, winner of the Prague half-marathon in April, was banned for five-year as the latest in a long list of Kenyan athletes suspended for suspected doping. Keneth Kiprop Renju, was banned for the "presence/use of a prohibited substance (Methasterone)".
  • A total of 54 Kenyan athletes have been banned for doping including Keneth Kiprop Renju.
  • The East African country is third on the list by the Athletics Integrity Unit of most athlete suspensions due to doping.
  • Russia tops the list with 87 athletes, and India is second with 62 suspensions.

Sharath Kamal to Receive 2022 Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna

  • Table tennis legend Achanta Sharath Kamal will receive the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the country's highest sporting honour, from President Droupadi Murmu on November 30 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
  • He is the first Indian table tennis player ever to become ten times Senior National Champion hence breaking the record of eight-time National Champion Kamlesh Mehta.
  • Based on the recommendations of the Committee and after due scrutiny, Government has decided to confer awards upon the following sportspersons, coaches and entities:

Mehuli Ghosh Won Gold Medal in the Asian Airgun Championship

  • Indian shooter Mehuli Ghosh has defeated South Korean Eunyoung Cho to clinch the Women's 10-metre Air Rifle gold medal at the Asian Airgun Championship in Daegu, South Korea.
  • The junior women's gold was bagged by Tilottama Sen who beat compatriot and qualification topper Nancy 17-11 in the 10-metre air rifle event.
  • In the youth women's event, India's Gautami Bhanot won Gold, Yukthi Rajendra Silver and Hazel won Bronze medals.

Sri Lanka to Host U19 Men's T-20 World Cup 2024

  • Sri Lanka will host the U19 Men's World Cup 2024, while Malaysia and Thailand will stage the U19 Women's T20 World Cup 2025, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced.
  • The hosts were selected through a competitive bidding process overseen by a Board sub-committee chaired by Martin Snedden.
  • The ICC Board accepted the recommendations of the committee, who conducted a thorough review of each bid along with ICC management.
  • The 2026 edition of the U19 Men's World Cup will be staged in Zimbabwe and Namibia, while Bangladesh and Nepal will jointly host the U19 Women's T20 World Cup 2027.

Kabaddi World Cup 2025 to be Hosted by West Midlands

  • The World Kabaddi Federation announced that the UK's West Midlands Region will host the 2025 Kabaddi World Cup.
  • This will be the first time that the Kabaddi World Cup will be held outside Asia. It will be organised by England Kabaddi, Scottish Kabaddi, and the British Kabaddi League.
  • The tournament will feature 16 teams (men and women), including from India, Iran, and Pakistan.
  • The first Kabaddi World Cup was held in Melaka, Malaysia in July 2019. The men's and women's title was won by the Indian team.

Shiva Thapa Clinches Silver Medal at Asian Boxing Championships

  • Shiva Thapa has clinched a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Elite Boxing Championships held in Amman, Jordan.
  • He had to settle for a silver medal after losing to Uzbekistan's Ruslan Abdullayev in the men's 63-kg finals.
  • India finished the Championships with 12 medals, which included four gold, two silver and six bronze.
  • All the gold medals came through women's boxers, Lovlina Borgohain, Saweety Boora, Parveen and Alfiya Pathan.

Asian Boxing Championship: Alfiya Khan Bags Gold in 81+ kg Category

  • India's ace boxer Alfiya Khan bagged a gold medal in the 81 plus weight category to continue the dominant show of the Indian women boxers at the Asian Boxing Championship in Amman, Jordan.
  • The judges disqualified her final rival, Jordan's Islam Husaili, in the opening round ending India's women's boxing campaign with a total of seven medals.
  • Lovlina Borgohain, who won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, defeated Ruzmetova Sokhiba of Uzbekistan 5-0 in the women's 75 kg final to win her maiden Asian Championship gold medal.

T20 World Cup 2022 Final: England Beats Pakistan by 5 Wickets

  • England was crowned the champions after they defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets in the final at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Australia. They are the first team to hold the ODI and T20 World Cups at the same time after their memorable win over New Zealand in the 2019 50-over final at Lord's. England also emulated West Indies to become only the second team in the history of the competition to lift two titles in the T20 World Cup.

New Zealand's Greg Barclay Re-elected ICC Chairman

  • The ICC board unanimously re-elected Greg Barclay as the Independent Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a second two-year term.
  • Barclay was unopposed following the withdrawal of Tavengwa Mukuhlani from the process, and the Board reaffirmed its full support of him to continue as Chair for a further two years.
  • Barclay, an Auckland-based commercial lawyer, was originally appointed as the ICC Chair in November 2020. He was previously the Chair of New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and was a director of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2015.

Kabaddi World Cup 2025 to be Hosted by West Midlands in England

  • The Kabaddi World Cup 2025 will be hosted out of Asia for the first time announced by the World Kabbadi Federation (WKF).
  • The region will host the sport's most prestigious global tournament which will feature the world's best kabaddi players from leading men's and women's teams from India, Iran, and Pakistan. The Kabaddi World Cup 2025 will take place in the West Midlands of the United Kingdom during the first quarter of 2025.
  • The Kabaddi World Cup 2025 will be the first edition after the 2020 edition that could not be held due to Covid-19.
  • The previous three editions of the Kabaddi World Cup were all held in India with the hosts emerging as the winner of the three editions.
  • Kabaddi World Cup 2025 will be organized by England Kabbadi, Scottish Kabaddi, and the British Kabbadi League.

Australian Boxing Icon Jeff Fenech Awarded World Title 31 Years after Controversial Draw

  • Australian boxing icon Jeff Fenech was awarded the World Boxing Council's super-featherweight belt 31 years after being denied the title in a controversial draw against Azumah Nelson.
  • A panel of WBC judges reassessed the June 28, 1991, fight at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas which lasted 12 rounds and resulted in Nelson keeping his belt.
  • One of his country's greatest boxers, Fenech held the IBF bantamweight title from 1985 to 1987, the WBC super-bantamweight title from 1987 to 1988 and the WBC featherweight title from 1988 to 1990.

India's Virat Kohli Becomes First Batter to Score 4000 Runs in T20Is

  • Indian star cricketer, Virat Kohli scripted history as he became the first batter in history to reach 4000 runs in T20 Internationals. Kohli reached the landmark in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 against England in Adelaide. Earlier, Kohli became the all-time leading run-scorer in the men's T20 World Cups against Bangladesh in Adelaide, overtaking Mahela Jayawardene's record of 1016 runs, which was set in 2014. Kohli, remarkably, raced to the magnificent milestone while batting at an average of 53.34. He is the only batter in the shortest format to average over 50 and reached the milestone in 115 matches.

ICC Hall of Fame: Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Charlotte Edwards and Abdul Qadir Inducted

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the latest legends who join the prestigious list of cricketing greats that make up the ICC Hall of Fame. Following a voting process that included existing Hall of Famers, media representatives plus senior executives from the Federation of International Cricketers (FICA) and the ICC, West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul, England Women's team legend Charlotte Edwards and Pakistan legend Abdul Qadir become inductees number 107, 108 and 109 respectively.
  • The ICC Hall of Fame celebrates the greatest players ever to grace the game throughout its rich history, and these three individuals have all left a lasting legacy through their significant contributions to the sport.
