Manipur Tops Northeast Olympic Games for Second Consecutive Time

Manipur clinched the top position in the Northeast Olympic Games for the second consecutive time with 237 medals, including 85 gold, as the second edition of the regional multi-sport event conluded.
Manipur also won 76 silver and 77 bronze while Assam was a close second with 201 medals (81 gold, 60 silver and 60 bronze) in the event competed among the eight states of the country's northeast region.
Arunachal Pradesh ended at third place, while host state Meghalaya was fourth with 149 medals (36 gold, 35 silver, 78 bronze.

BCCI Dissolves 4-Member National Selection Committee Headed by Chetan Sharma

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) dissolved the four-member National Selection Committee headed by Chetan Sharma after India team's uninspired performance in T20 World Cup. Apart from chief selector Chetan Sharma, other members of the selection committee were Sunil Joshi, Harvinder Singh and Debashish Mohanty.
The team selection for tournaments like the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup was unsatisfactory. Constant chop and change on the team's leadership and the sideline of Shikhar Dhawan, while persisting with K.L. Rahul being the reasons for the disbarment of the national selection committee.

Max Verstappen Wins Abu Dhabi Grand Prix; the Final Race of 2022 Formula One World Season

Red Bull driver and World Champions Max Verstappen cruised to a 15th Grand Prix win of 2022 as Formula 1 2022 season came to an end with the final race at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Charles Leclerc finished second in the race and in turn confirmed P2 in the driver's world championship, beating Sergio Perez by three points. Mexican driver Perez rounded up the final podium position and Ferrari's Carlos Sainz finished P4. Mercedes' George Russel finished fifth as seven-time world champions Lewis Hamilton failed to finish the race because of a mechanical failure. Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from F1 earlier this year, making the Abu Dhabi GP the final race of his career. The German driver finished P10 and thanked the fans for support and for loving him all these years.

India's Manika Batra wins Bronze Medal in Asian Cup Table Tennis Tournament in Bangkok

Barely hours after losing her semi-final match to Japan's second seed Mima Ito in the Asian Cup table tennis tournament in Bangkok, Manika Batra produced a dazzling performance to outclass another Japanese Hina Hayata, World No.6 and the third seed, (4-2) 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10, 4-11, 11-2 in the play-off match for the third place and bagged a historic bronze medal. She became the first Indian paddler to win a medal in the ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup.

Paralympics-IPC Suspends Russian, Belarusian Committees with Immediate Effect

The International Paralympic Committee voted to suspend the National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) of Russia and Belarus with immediate effect, placing their para-athletes' hopes of competing at the 2024 Paralympics in jeopardy.
Athletes from the two countries had previously been barred from competing in the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, for which Belarus has been a staging area.
Russia's suspension was passed by 64 votes to 39, with 16 abstentions, at the IPC's extraordinary General Assembly in Berlin. The suspension of Belarus' NPC passed 54-45, with 18 abstentions.
Both NPCs were suspended for their "inability to comply with their membership obligations under the IPC Constitution."
Due to their suspension, NPC Russia and NPC Belarus lost all rights and privileges of IPC membership, in accordance with the IPC Constitution.

Asian Airgun Championship: Indian Junior Women's Pistol Team Wins Gold

The Indian junior women's pistol team comprising Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Shikha Narwal won a gold medal in the 15th Asian Airgun Championship in Daegu, South Korea.
It took India's gold count to 23, with one day of the competition remaining.
The trio beat South Korea's Kim Minseo, Kim Juhee and Yang Jiin 16-12 in the final.
In the women's 10m air pistol team event, Rhythm Sangwan, Palak and Yuvika Tomar won silver after going down 12-16 to South Koreans Kim Jangmi, Kim Bomi and Yoo Hyunyoung.

Mary Kom is Chairperson of Athletes Commission

Six-time World women's boxing champion and Olympic medallist Mary Kom was elected as the Chairperson of the Athletes Commission of the Indian Olympic Associaiton (IOA).
The vice chairperson position went to Sharath Kamal, a table tennis player.
Both received their certificates from the Returning Officer Umesh Sinha who will conduct the election of the (IOA) on December 10.

Spain's Carlos Alcaraz Becomes Youngest Year-end ATP World Number 1

Following Rafael Nadal's defeat to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the ATP Finals 2022 that knocked him out of contention for the final four, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest year-end ATP World Number 1, making him the first teenager to achieve this feat.
Alcaraz experienced an incredible rise in the world of tennis this year. He soared from number 32 to the top of this sport's mountain on September 12, which is also the biggest jump to number one in 50 editions of year-end ATP rankings.
Before this 19-year-old star, the youngest year-end ATP World Number 1 was Lleyton Hewitt of Australia, who was 20 years, 275 days in age at the time of his crowning in 2001.

Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Mascot Unveiled

Paris 2024 organisers unveiled a Phrygian cap as the official mascot of the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The mascots, named the Phryges, were unveiled with just over 600 days to go before the opening of the Olympic Games in 2024. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games use the same design with slight differences.
The Olympic Phryge is triangular in shape and comes with a friendly smile, blue eyes, a tricolour ribbon and big coloured sneakers. The Paralympic version features a prosthetic leg that goes to the knee.
The mascots have always occupied a special place in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Paris 2024 president Tony Estanguet. "They form the emotional bond between the Games and the people, contributing to the atmosphere and festive spirit in the stadiums and other Olympic venues."
