Alphabet Inc's Google to Build its First Cloud Region in Greece

  • Alphabet Inc's Google will set up its first cloud region in Greece, giving a boost to the country's efforts to become a world cloud computing hub.
  • The deal is estimated to contribute some 2.2 billion euros ($2.13 billion) to Greece's economic output and create some 20,000 jobs by 2030.
  • Since taking office in 2019, Mitsotakis's conservative government has stepped up moves to diversify the economy and attract foreign investment and high tech companies to the country which emerged from a decade-long financial crisis in 2018.
  • The investment would enable organisations to better use their data, help improve low latency and ensure users' security in the face of cyber-security threats.

Iran Launches Test 'Tug' into Suborbital Space

  • Iran launched a space tug capable of shifting satellites between orbits.
  • The Saman test spacecraft was built by the country's Space Research Centre and launched by the Defence Ministry.
  • Iran unveiled the craft in 2017. A space tug can transfer a satellite from one orbit to another.
  • Iran has long pursued a space program saying it is aimed at peaceful purposes. The country has both a civilian and a military space program, which the US fears could be used to advance its ballistic missile program.

Scientists Find New Evidence of Liquid Water on Mars

  • An international team of researchers found new evidence for the possible existence of liquid water beneath the south polar ice cap of Mars.
  • The results provide the first independent line of evidence, using data other than radar, that there is liquid water beneath Mars' South Pole.
  • The researchers led by the University of Cambridge with involvement from the University of Sheffield, used spacecraft laser-altimeter measurements of the shape of the upper surface of the ice cap to identify subtle patterns in its height.
  • Their results are in agreement with earlier ice-penetrating radar measurements that were originally interpreted to show a potential area of liquid water beneath the ice.

Nicole Aunapu Mann Becomes First Native American Woman in Space

  • SpaceX sent a new crew of four people to the International Space for NASA.
  • NASA relies on SpaceX to deliver astronauts to the ISS as the only American company currently flying people from U.S. soil to orbit.
  • Mann's crewmates represent a broad swath of cultural backgrounds. She flew alongside fellow NASA astronaut Josh Cassada, who is from Minnesota; Koichi Wakata of Japan's space agency, called JAXA, or Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency; and Anna Kikina, a Roscomos cosmonaut who joined this mission as part of a US-Russian ride-sharing agreement.
  • With this mission Mann became the first Native American woman to venture into space.

ONDC Consumer Beta Testing Begin in 16 Bengaluru Pin Codes

  • The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), the government-backed interoperable network went live for users at 16 pin codes of Bengaluru. More than 200 grocery stores and restaurants in the city were onboarded for this phase of the trial.
  • The objective of the beta test is to allow consumers to experience the network for the first time and gather feedback which will help further refine the network before a pan-India roll-out.
  • To begin with, consumers can place their orders in two categories – groceries and restaurants through buyer apps: Paytm, Spice Money and Mystore.
  • Buyer apps refer to applications or websites that enable consumers to shop from all sellers available on ONDC.

Indian Mars Orbiter Mission: Mangalyaan Craft Completes 8 Years in Orbit

  • India's Mars orbiter craft completed eight years in its orbit, well beyond its designed mission life of six months, and lost contact with ground station bringing an end to its life. Plans on a follow-on 'Mangalyaan' mission to the Red Planet, however, are yet to be firmed up.
  • The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), a technology demonstration venture, is the maiden interplanetary mission of the national space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • Launched on November 5, 2013, the probe was successfully inserted into Martian orbit on September 24, 2014 in its first attempt.
  • To mark the latest milestone, ISRO organised a 'National Meet on Eight Years of India's Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)' at its headquarters with an inaugural address by its Chairman S. Somanath.
  • Space Commission members K. Radhakrishnan and A. S. Kiran Kumar delivered special addresses at the meet, which focused on themes 'Mars Orbiter Mission Overview', 'Scientific Achievements' and 'Future Directions in the exploration of the inner solar system'.
  • India is the first Asian nation to reach Martian orbit and the first nation in the world to reach Mars on a Maiden attempt.

USOF Launches Telecom Technology Development Fund Scheme

  • Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), a body under the Department of Telecommunications, officially launched Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme, which aims to promote indigenous manufacturing and innovation in the sector.
  • TTDF aims to fund research and development (R&D) in rural-specific communication technology applications and form synergies among academia, start-ups, research institutes, and the industry to build and develop the telecom ecosystem.
  • Additionally, the scheme aims to promote technology ownership and indigenous manufacturing, create a culture of technology co-innovation, reduce imports, boost export opportunities and creation of Intellectual Property, the Ministry of Communications said in a statement.
  • Under the scheme, USOF is also targeting to develop standards to meet countrywide requirements and create the ecosystem for research, design, prototyping, use cases, pilots, and proof of concept testing, among others.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 6th India Mobile Congress at Pragati Maidan in Delhi and launched 5G services. PM Modi also inspected the exhibition at Pragati Maidan. 5G technology would provide seamless coverage, high data rate, low latency, and highly reliable communications. It will increase energy efficiency, spectrum efficiency and network efficiency.
  • The cumulative economic impact of 5G on India is estimated to reach USD 450 billion by 2035. Capable of supporting ultra-high-speed internet, the fifth generation or 5G service is expected to unleash new economic opportunities and societal benefits, serving as a transformational force for Indian society.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Unveils the Humanoid Robot 'Optimus'

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the much-touted humanoid robot 'Optimus', after announcing about it in 2021 and postponing the launch event from August 2021to September 2021.
  • CEO Musk stated that the robot is slated to bring more business to the company than the cars manufactured by Tesla.
  • The humanoid robot 'Optimus' was launched at the electric vehicle maker's "AI Day" event on Friday. At the event Musk also showed a video of the robot picking up boxes and moving through a rendered office building to water plants.
