'Into the Darkness' Bags Golden Peacock Award

Danish World War II drama "Into the Darkness" won the Golden Peacock award at the closing ceremony of the 51st edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
Directed by Anders Refn, the 152-minute film chronicles the complex, emotional turmoil which the people of Denmark had to undergo during the Nazi occupation of the country. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 40 lakh, to be shared equally between Refn and producer Lene Borglum. The duo, however, were not present.
A total of 224 films were screened at the festival. Japanese historical drama "Wife of a Spy" by Kiyoshi Kurosawa was the closing film at the nine-day gala.

President Kovind Confers Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards to 40 People

President Ram Nath Kovind approved the conferment of the Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards, 2020, to 40 people, ahead of 72nd Republic Day.
The award is given to a person for an exemplary act of human nature in saving someone's life. It can be awarded under three categories - Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak and Jeevan Raksha Padak. It is also given posthumously.
The awardee receives a medal, a certificate signed by the Union home minister and a lump sum monetary allowance which is presented to the receiver by the respective union ministries/organizations/state government to which he or she belongs.

Government Confers 119 PADMA Honours

Former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam, spiritual leader Maulana Wahiduddin Khan and controversial archaeologist BB Lal were among seven people awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award.
The list of Padma awards also comprised 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri recipients. This included 29 women, 10 people of Indian origin, non-resident Indians and foreigners, 16 posthumous awardees and one transgender person.

Bhanu Kapil Wins TS Eliot Prize

Indian-origin author-poet Bhanu Kapil has been named the winner of the prestigious TS Eliot Prize, named after the renowned 20th-century American-British poet.
London-based Kapil beat nine other shortlisted entries with her winning title 'How to Wash a Heart', which explores the relationship between an immigrant guest and a citizen host. The prize is seen as the most valuable prize in British poetry. It comes with a cheque for 25,000 pounds and all the shortlisted poets are presented with cheques for 1,500 pounds each.

Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2021

The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar has been awarded to 32 children this year for their tremendous and outstanding accomplishments and exceptional abilities in several fields such as innovation, scholastics, sports, arts, culture, social service, and bravery.
The children who have been awarded this prize are from across the country. The Ministry of Women and Child Development issued a statement saying that the awardees are from 32 districts of 21 states and Union territories.
The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar is awarded to children every year to recognize their excellence and outstanding efforts made in several fields. This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the event virtually.
Indian President Ram Nath Kovind congratulated the awardees of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, saying that this award will motivate the children of India to push for excellence and get inspired to perform better.

Nikhil Srivastava Is Joint Winner of Michael and Sheila Held Prize

Nikhil Srivastava, a young Indian mathematician, has been named winner of the prestigious 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize along with two others for solving long-standing questions on the Kadison-Singer problem and on Ramanujan graphs. Srivastava is currently Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of California.
Srivastava from the University of California, Berkeley, Adam Marcus, the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Daniel Alan Spielman from Yale University will receive the 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize.
The Michael and Sheila Held Prize is presented annually and honours outstanding, innovative, creative, and influential research in the areas of combinatorial and discrete optimisation, or related parts of computer science, such as the design and analysis of algorithms and complexity theory. The prize was established in 2017 by the bequest of Michael And Sheila Held. The prize consists of a medal and USD 100,000.

Funskool India Wins Award for Performance in SGEPC

Funskool India, the MRF group promoted toy manufacturer, announced that it has been conferred with Platinum Award for outstanding performance in export of Sports Goods & Toys by the Sports Goods Export Promotion Council (SGEPC).
The toy maker said that the recognition is for achieving the second highest export of sport goods and toys during the year 2019-20. Funskool also said it is also recognised as the largest exporter of toys from India in 2019-20 by SGEPC.

Quaide Milleth Awards

Bilkis dadi, the face of the Shaheen Bagh anti-CAA protests, and social activist and writer Harsh Mander of Karwan-e-Mohabbat were presented the Quaide Milleth Award for Probity in Political and Public Life at the India Islamic Cultural Centre, New Delhi.
The award consists of a shawl, citation and cash of Rs. 2.5 lakh and was presented to the recipients by Navaid Hamid, President, All India Majilis e Mushawarat.
N. Ram, Director, THG Publishing Pvt. Ltd., said that both recipients had made a mark in public life with their determination and zeal to protect the secular fabric of the country. He said the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is the face of the current oppressive regime. The selfless achievements of the awardees would be truly honoured only if a stance was taken in defence of the Constitution which has been under attack since the advent of this regime.

Pink Seesaws at US-Mexico Wall Win Design Award

While a wall is usually designed to keep people apart, this see-saw installation managed to bring people on both sides of the Mexico-US border together.
Now, the Teeter Totter Wall has won the 2020 Beazley Design of the Year award, which is run by London's Design Museum.
The see-saws were placed through sections of the wall and allowed people in both countries to play together.
They were installed by Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello at the Anapra zone in Ciudad Juarez in Mexico. Even though they were only in place for 20 minutes, video footage of people using them went viral.
Tim Marlow, chief executive and director of the Design Museum, which awarded the installation the prize, said: "The Teeter-Totter Wall encouraged new ways of human connection. It remains an inventive and poignant reminder of how human beings can transcend the forces that seek to divide us."
