Assam's Cachar District Wins SKOCH Award

  • A backyard garden project that enabled a village on the Bangladesh border to consume nutritious plants and vegetables and earn by selling the surplus produce has earned an award for a southern Assam district.
  • Cachar Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli received the National Silver SKOCH Award a few days ago for 'Pushti Nirbhor' (nutrition-dependent), a convergence project on transformation and development entailing setting up nutri-gardens at houses in Dinnathpur Bagicha village.
  • The village is near the India-Bangladesh border in Katigorah circle of Cachar district.

Jamia Milia Islamia Professor Mohd. Zahid Ashraf Gets Visitor's Award 2020

  • Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) Professor Mohd. Zahid Ashraf, Head, Department of Biotechnology will be conferred with the Visitor's Award 2020 by President Ram Nath Kovind at a function at the Rashtrapati Bhavan for his pioneering research on resolving the mystery of blood clotting on exposure to hypoxia at high altitudes.
  • Professor Ashraf will be receiving this award under the Biological Sciences category. His work has significantly contributed towards developing strategy for an early diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis at extremely challenging environmental conditions at high altitudes.
  • Prof. Ashraf is an elected Fellow of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He is a member of distinguished Guha Research Council.

Bangladesh Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus to get Olympic Laurel

  • Bangladeshi Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus will receive the Olympic Laurel at the Tokyo Games, the second time the trophy will be awarded, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said.
  • Yunus, whose pioneering micro-lender has been hailed for cutting poverty across the globe, will be honoured for "his extensive work in sport for development", the IOC said in a statement.
  • The 81-year-old economist-turned-globe-trotting celebrity speaker won the Nobel in 2006. He will be given the award at the Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony on July 23.

Two Indian Organisations Win UNDP Equator Prize 2021

  • Aadhimalai Pazhangudiyinar Producer Company Limited and Snehakunja Trust are among the 10 awardees of the prestigious Equator Prize for their work in the field of conservation and biodiversity, said United Nations Development Fund (UNDP).
  • The UNDP gives a biennial award to recognize community efforts to reduce poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
  • Aadhimalai Pazhangudiyinar Producer Company Limited is a 1,700-member cooperative, managed and run entirely by indigenous people from the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in Tamil Nadu and its work in the past eight years has improved livelihood across 147 villages by processing and marketing a diverse range of forest produce and crops.

India's Payal Kapadia Wins Best Documentary Award

  • Director Payal Kapadia's A Night of Knowing Nothing won the Oeil d'or (Golden Eye) award for best documentary at the 74th Cannes Film Festival.
  • The Mumbai-based filmmaker's first feature bagged the prestigious prize in a formidable field made up of 28 documentaries presented across various sections of the festival. A Night of Knowing Nothing screened as part of the Directors' Fortnight, a section that runs parallel to the festival.
  • The Oeil d'or jury was headed by American documentary producer Ezra Edelman. It had four other members: French filmmaker Julie Bertuccelli, French actor Deborah Francois, Franco-American film critic Iris Brey and Orwa Nyrabia, artistic director of the International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) Amsterdam.

BKS Literary Award goes to N N Pillai

  • Journalist and playwright Omchery N N Pillai has been selected for the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS)'s Literary Award for 2021. BKS president P V Radhakrishna Pillai, general secretary Varghese Karackal and literary wing secretary Firoz Thiruvathra announced the award, in a joint press note.The Jury was headed by the novelist M Mukundan. Literary critic Dr K S Ravikumar, writer and Kerala Chief Secretary Dr V P Joy, and Radhakrishna Pillai were part of the jury. 
  • The award constitutes a cash prize of `50,000 and a citation acknowledging the achievement. The award ceremony will be held later in Delhi."His enormous contributions as a whole to Malayalam language and literature are remarkable, which ultimately led to this award. 
  • As a playwright, he contributed many works, including Thevarude Aana and Pralayam, to modern Malayalam theatre. Being a resident of Delhi for the past seven decades, he has been promoting Malayalam and Malayalam literature among Keralite expats," said Radhakrishna Pillai.

British Indian Chemist in Millennium Tech Prize Winning team for Revolutionary DNA tech

  • Cambridge University chemists Shankar Balasubramanian and David Klenerman were declared the winners of the 2020 Millennium Technology Prize, a prestigious global science and technology prize awarded for their development of revolutionary sequencing techniques which means DNA can now be read in super-fast times.
  • The prize, awarded by Technology Academy Finland (TAF) at two-year intervals since 2004, when Sir Tim Berners-Lee was honoured for his discovery of the World Wide Web, to highlight the extensive impact of science and innovation on the wellbeing of society, is worth Euro 1 million.
  • Sir Balasubramanian, an India-born British professor of medicinal chemistry, and Sir Klenerman, a British biophysical chemist, co-invented the Solexa-Illumina Next Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS), technology enabling fast, accurate, low-cost and large-scale genome sequencing, the process of determining the complete DNA sequence of an organism's make-up, which is proving crucial in humanity's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
