Beryl Thanga Receives Manipur State Award for His Novel

  • Novelist Beryl Thanga received the 12th Manipur State Award for Literature 2020 for his book – 'Ei Amadi Adungeigi Ithat' (I and the then island). Manipur Governor La. Ganesan conferred the award on the writer for his novel published in 2015. The award carries a plaque, citation, Rs. 3 lakh (in cheque) and a shawl.
  • The awardee (Beryl Thanga) was selected for the year 2020 by a Board of Eminent persons set up by the Government. The Governor said that the Manipuri language is one of the 22 scheduled languages under the Constitution of India. It is regarded as the most advanced of the Tibeto-Burmese languages spoken in India.

NGO Pratham Gets Indira Gandhi Prize

  • Pratham, the NGO working to expand the scope for education in India, was awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2021.
  • The 2021 price is awarded to Pratham for its pioneering work over more than a quarter century in seeking to ensure that every child has access to quality education, for its innovative use of digital technology to deliver education, for its regular evaluation of the quality of education, and for its timely response in enabling children to learn during the Covid-19-related school closures.

Jason Mott Wins US Literary Prize for 'Masterful' Novel 'Hell of a Book'

  • The North Carolina writer Jason Mott won the National Book Foundation's 2021 prize for fiction, for his novel Hell of a Book.
  • The US foundation's 72nd annual awards were presented online only due to Covid-19.
  • Mott is best known for his 2013 bestselling debut novel The Returned, about the reappearance of dead residents in a Missouri town, which was later adapted into the US TV series Resurrection.

Patrick Radden Keefe Wins 50,000 Pounds Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-fiction

  • Patrick Radden Keefe's "Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty" was awarded the 50,000 pound ($67,000) Baillie Gifford Prize during a ceremony at London's Science Museum.
  • Keefe's book chronicles the billionaire Sackler clan, owner of Purdue Pharma, whose members used their fortune to fund museums and art galleries around the world. A reckoning has come with the revelation that much of that fortune was based on OxyContin, a powerful prescription painkiller that the company developed in the 1990s and marketed aggressively to doctors.
