Ayurveda Doyen P. R. Krishnakumar Dies of COVID-19

  • P.R. Krishnakumar, Chancellor of Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, Coimbatore, and the managing director of the Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Coimbatore) Limited, died of COVID-19 in Coimbatore. He was 69.
  • A recipient of Padma Shri, who played a major role in the preparation of the Ayush protocol, Krishnakumar was undergoing treatment for COVID-19 in a private hospital in Coimbatore for over a week. 

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Gasti Died

  • Fifty-five-year-old Gasti, who was admitted to Manipal Hospital, passed away due to COVID-19.
  • Rajya Sabha MP Shri Ashok Gasti was a dedicated Karyakarta who worked hard to strengthen the Party in Karnataka. He was passionate about empowering the poor and marginalised sections of society.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal Quits Union Cabinet in Protest Against Two Agri Bills

  • Terming the two agriculture marketing reform Bills passed by the Lok Sabha as "anti-farmer" legislation, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP and Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the Union Cabinet in protest. 
  • Her party is one of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) oldest allies, and Ms. Badal was its sole representative in the Modi government.

Former Chhattisgarh Minister, Congress Leader Chanesh Ram Rathiya Dies

  • Former Chhattisgarh minister and veteran Congress leader Chanesh Ram Rathiya died of COVID-19. He was 78 years old. 
  • He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters. His elder son Laljeet Singh Rathiya is currently a Congress legislator from Dharamjaigarh seat in Chhattisgarh. 
  • Rathiya, a prominent tribal leader from north Chhattisgarh, was elected as an MLA for the first time in 1977 from Dharamjaigarh constituency in the then undivided Madhya Pradesh. He subsequently won five more Assembly elections in a row from the same seat.

Arts Scholar Kapila Vatsyayan Passed Away

  • Vatsyayan, who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2011, was the founding director of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. A former nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, she was also chairperson of the Asia Project at the IIC.
  • Scholar, author and connoisseur of the arts Kapila Vatsyayan died at her Delhi home. She was 92. 
  • Vatsyayan was also the chairperson of the Asia Project at the IIC. She was the founding director of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts.

Moussa Traore, Who Led Mali's First Military Coup, Dies at 83

  • Mali's former military leader Moussa Traore, who overthrew his predecessor in a 1968 coup, has died at the age of 83.
  • Traore ousted Modibo Keita, Mali's first democratically elected president since the West African nation's independence from France in 1960, and ruled until 1991 when he himself was overthrown in a military takeover.

Former India Cricketer Sadashiv Raoji Patil Dies

  • Former India player Sadashiv Raoji Patil, who represented the country in one Test match, died at his residence in Kolhapur.
  • He was 86 and is survived by wife and two daughters.
  • Patil, who was a pace bowling all-rounder, played a Test match against New Zealand in 1955.
  • He didn't get any more chance to play for the country.
  • Patil played 36 First Class matches for Maharashtra from 1952-1964, scoring 866 runs and taking 83 wickets.
  • He had also captained Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy.

Sachin Tendulkar Becomes Brand Ambassador of Paytm First Games

  • Digital payment company Paytm said, "Its gaming subsidiary Paytm First Games (PFG) has roped in cricket personality 'Sachin Tendulkar' as its brand ambassador. Now he will be looking to raise awareness about the world of fantasy sports in the country.
  • Digital payments company Paytm said, besides Fantasy cricket, he is also going to promote PFG sports including kabaddi, football, and basketball.  The company has said that its partnership with Sachin Tendulkar could extend its reach to smaller cities and towns. PFG's parent company Paytm is India's most valuable unicorn with $16 billion.

Rajesh Khullar New Executive Director of World Bank

  • Senior bureaucrat Rajesh Khullar has been appointed as Executive Director, World Bank, Washington.
  • Khullar, a 1988-batch IAS officer, is currently serving in his cadre state Haryana. He is the principal secretary to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
  • He will have a tenure of three years or till the date of his superannuation, i.e. August 31, 2023.
  • In another order, the Personnel Ministry said that Sameer Kumar Khare has been appointed Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Manila.
  • Khare is a 1989-batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre and is currently the additional secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs.
  • He has been appointed Executive Director of ADB for a tenure of three years.

Senior Journalist N. Rajesh Passes Away

  • N. Rajesh, 56, senior news editor with Madhyamam daily, passed away.
  • He is known for his reportage of national and international sporting events such as the Asian Football Championship, Afro-Asian Games, and the National Games. Mr. Rajesh has bagged the Kerala Sports Council Award in 1992 and the Swadeshabhimani Award.
  • He was a member of the State Media Accreditation Committee, executive committee member of the Kerala Media Academy, and the State committee member of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists. He was also a faculty member at the Institute of Communication and Journalism under the Calicut Press Club.

Paresh Rawal to Head National School of Drama

  • President Ram Nath Kovind appointed actor and former BJP MP Paresh Rawal has been appointed as the chairperson of the National School of Drama society.
  • Mr. Rawal's experience would help artistes and students of the NSD. Mr. Rawal, who served one term as the Ahmedabad East MP from 2014-2019.
  • The post had been vacant since playwright Ratan Thiyam's tenure ended in 2017. Mr. Rawal has been appointed for a four-year term.
