Former Pakistan President Mamnoon Hussain Passes Away in Karachi
Former president of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain passed away after a prolonged illness, according to his family and party leaders. He was 80.
Hussain, who was born in Agra in 1940 and migrated with his parents to Pakistan in 1947, served as the 12th President of Pakistan between September 2013 and September 2018.
The senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader was diagnosed with cancer in February last year and was under treatment at a private hospital in Karachi for some days where he breathed his last.
186th Death Anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem Observed
In Meghalaya, the 186th Death Anniversary of the Khasi freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem was observed on July 17, 2021.
The programme was organised by the Department of Art and Culture in collaboration with Meghalaya Model United Nations.
FR Kharkongor, Commissioner and Secretary, Arts and Culture department paid homage to U Tirot Sing Syiem, the great freedom fighter of Meghalaya who fought relentlessly to prevent Khasi Hills from falling into the hands of the British.
Highlighting contributions of U Tirot Sing in the country's freedom movement, Kharkongor said, the history of the great freedom fighter should be revisited to get a 360 degree perspective of what he represented.
On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, people must remember freedom fighters and take inspiration from their sacrifices.
In a tweet, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma paid tribute to the Khasi freedom fighter.

Taliban Denies Role in Photojournalist Danish Siddiqui's Death
The Taliban has said it does know how Indian photojournalist Danish Siddiqui was killed and expressed regret over the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist's death in Afghanistan's Kandahar during clashes between its fighters and Afghan forces.
Danish Siddiqui, a Reuters journalist, was killed on Friday while covering a clash between Afghan security forces and Taliban fighters near a border crossing with Pakistan, the news agency cited an Afghan commander as saying. He was 38.

Gira Sarabhai, Co-founder of NID, Passes Away at 98
Gira Sarabhai, co-founder of the renowned National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad and a pioneer of design education in India, passed away in Ahmedabad.
She played a crucial role in setting up several other institutions and contributed immensely in the field of art and architecture.
With her brother Gautam Sarabhai, she founded the NID and also prepared its academic curricula, which laid the foundation for design education in the country.
Surekha Sikri Dies of Cardiac Arrest at 75
Veteran actor Surekha Sikri has died at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest, her manager has said. She had been unwell for several months, and had suffered a brain stroke in 2020.
Surekha Sikri made her debut in 1978, with the film Kissa Kursi Ka. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress thrice, for her roles in Tamas (1988), Mammo (1995) and Badhaai Ho (2018).
She gained prominence for her performance in the primtetime soap opera Balika Vadhu. Her performance in the Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Badhaai Ho drew immense acclaim and was seen as somewhat of a career comeback.

Biden set to Name Rahul Gupta as US' top Drug Policy Official
US President Joe Biden is reportedly set to name Rahul Gupta as the country's top drug policy official, adding another Indian American to a senior position in his administration.
Gupta, a primary-care doctor who served as top health official of West Virginia state, is slated to be named director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, a position that's called the "drug czar", a term coined by President Biden, who, as a senator, had also supported the creation of the office.
The office was created in 1982 to frame and coordinate national policy on combating substance-use disorders, including the response to an opioid crisis.
Yashpal Sharma, India's 1983 World Cup Winning Team Member, Passes Away
Former Indian cricketer Yashpal Sharma, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad, passed away due to cardiac arrest in 2021. A middle order batsman, Sharma represented India in 37 Test matches and 42 one-day internationals.
He was an important member of Kapil Dev's side that won the World Cup in England in 1983. Sharma was India's second highest scorer behind Kapil Dev in the tournament, piling up 240 runs in 8 innings with two half centuries to his kitty.
