Army Conducts Exercise Parvat Prahar in Ladakh Sector

  • Army chief General Manoj Pande visited the Ladakh sector and reviewed Exercise Parvat Prahar and was briefed on operational preparedness by commanders on ground. The exercise saw the deployment of all new major inductions of the Army.
  • The exercise used newly inducted all-terrain vehicles transported by Chinook heavy lift helicopters and K9-Vajra howitzers, among others.
  • The exercise came as India and China undertook disengagement from Patrolling Point-15 in eastern Ladakh.

  • INS Satpura and P8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft arrive in Darwin in Australia to Participate in Multinational Naval Ex Kakadu hosted by the Royal Australian Navy.
  • The two-week-long Exercise, both in harbour and sea, involves ships and maritime aircraft from 14 Navies.
  • During the harbour phase of the exercise, the ship's crew would engage in operational planning interactions and sports activities with participating Navies.

Indian Navy Launches Stealth Frigate 'Taragiri' in Mumbai

  • Taragiri', the third stealth frigate of the Indian Navy's Project 17A, was launched in Mumbai. This ship was built using an integrated construction methodology which involved hull block construction in different geographical locations and integration and erection on the slipway at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL).
  • The keel of 'Taragiri' was laid on September 10, 2020. The ship is expected to be delivered by August 2025. The vessel is being launched with an approximate launch weight of 3,510 tonnes. The frigate is designed by the Indian Navy's in-house design organization, the Bureau of Naval Design. The MDL undertook the detailed design and construction of the ship which is also overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai). The total value of Project 17A is around Rs. 25,700 crore.

Wildlife Board Okays New IAF Base in Ladakh

  • The standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) cleared the setting up of a new IAF base in Ladakh where Indian and Chinese troops have been facing off along the Line of Actual Control since May 2020.
  • The clearance for the IAF base was given at a high-level meeting. The base, which would be located in the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary in eastern Ladakh, would be spread over 508.187 hectares of land, not very far from the LAC.
  • The NBWL cleared eight Defence projects in the Changthang and Karakoram wildlife sanctuaries as India takes steps to ramp up its defence infrastructure near the LAC to match similar initiatives being taken by China to upgrade its military infrastructure in the area.

Indian Army, Air Force Conduct Joint Exercise 'Gagan Strike' in Punjab

  • Army's Kharga Corps and the Indian Air Force conducted a joint exercise to showcase the might and prowess of the armed forces.
  • Termed "Gagan Strike", the exercise was conducted over a period of four days in several areas of Punjab, bordering Ambala in Haryana.
  • The operation validated the Apache 64E and Advanced Light Helicopter WSI as potent weapon delivery platforms.
  • Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding, Kharga Corps, who spearheaded this exercise, also showcased precision firepower by attack helicopters in coordination with ground forces' mechanised columns.
  • The exercise was also attended by Lt Gen Nav K Khanduri, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Command, who exhorted the forces to continue to evolve such concepts and remain prepared to counter any contingency on the western borders.

India, Japan to Enhance Defence Ties to Bolster their Strategic Partnership

  • India and Japan agreed to step up bilateral defence cooperation and engage in more military exercises, including holding the first joint fighter jet drills, as they emphasised that their special strategic ties played a crucial role in ensuring a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific, amidst China's aggressive behaviour in the region.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Japanese counterpart Yasukazu Hamada on the first day of his official visit to Japan and the two leaders reviewed various aspects of bilateral defence cooperation and regional affairs.

India Successfully Test-fires Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile System

  • India successfully completed flight-tests of six Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur off the Odisha coast. The flight tests were conducted as part of evaluation trials by the Indian Army.
  • The flight-tests were carried out against high-speed aerial targets mimicking various types of threats to evaluate the capability of the weapon systems under different scenarios, including long range medium altitude, short range, high altitude manoeuvring target, low radar signature with receding and crossing target and salvo launch with two missiles fired in quick succession.
  • As per DRDO, during these tests, all the mission objectives were met establishing pin-point accuracy of the weapon system with state-of-the-art guidance and control algorithms, including warhead chain.

Indian Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande Conferred Honorary Title by Nepal's President

  • President of Nepal Bidya Devi Bhandari conferred the Honorary Rank of General of the Nepal Army to Gen. Manoj Pande, chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army.
  • The President at the Shital Niwas, the official residence of Bhandari, conferred the honorary rank -- a long tradition of exchange of visits by the army chiefs of Nepal and India and conferring the title of honorary General to both the army chiefs -- during a special ceremony in Kathmandu.
  • The tradition started in 1950. India also confers the honorary rank of "General of Indian Army" to the Nepal Army Chief.
  • General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff, Indian Army handed over various non-lethal military items to General Prabhu Ram Sharma, Chief of the Army Staff, Nepali Army.
