New Zealand Declares National Emergency as Cyclone Gabrielle Wreaks Havoc

  • New Zealand declared a national state of emergency for only the third time in its history as Cyclone Gabrielle caused widespread flooding, landslides and huge ocean swells, forcing evacuations and stranding people on roof tops.
  • Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said that the disaster is New Zealand's biggest weather event in a century.
  • As per reports, at least 225,000 people were without power.

Odisha Reports 578 Forest Fires over the Last Week, the Highest in the Country

  • Odisha reported 578 incidents of fire in Odisha's forests over the week between February 1 and February 8, 2023, the highest in the country, according to the Forest Survey of India's (FSI) fire alerts system based on Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP). Another 541 fires were reported from Madhya Pradesh and 463 in Karnataka.
  • "The incidents of wildfires in the state are increasing at an alarming rate. If we experience a long dry spell, it may increase to over a thousand cases by April," said Odisha's principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) Debidutta Biswal.

  • The study led by Newcastle University is the first global attempt to map potential hotspots for such floods.
  • As the climate warms, glaciers retreat and melt-water collects, forming lakes.
  • The impact of global warming on glacial lake floods is yet to be defined, but it has increased both the volume and number of glacial lakes worldwide.

RIL, Ashok Leyland Unveil First Hydrogen Combustion Driven Heavy Duty Truck

  • Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries (RIL) and Ashok Leyland unveiled India's first Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) powered heavy duty truck. The vehicle was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru at the India Energy Week.
  • Ashok Leyland, the Indian flagship company of the Hinduja Group and India's leading commercial vehicle manufacturer, along with RIL, has been developing this unique technology over the past year and has been under test since August 2022. The Ashok Leyland H2-ICE heavy-duty truck range (19-35 Tonne) is powered by hydrogen, a renewable and clean energy source.
