Harmanpreet Kaur and Renuka Singh Thakur Rested for Ireland Series

  • Prolific opener Smriti Mandhana was named captain of the Indian women's cricket team for this month's three-match home ODI series against Ireland after regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was rested. Also given a break was pacer Renuka Singh Thakur.
  • The short series against Ireland began on January 10 and all three games will be played at Rajkot.

Three-Time Olympic Swimming Gold Medallist Katinka Hosszu Announces Retirement

  • Three-time Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, one of the greatest all-around swimmers, announced her retirement.
  • Known as the "Iron Lady" of swimming for her gruelling repertoire of events, Hosszu competed at five Olympic Games. She was only 15 when she made her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games.

New Zealand's Martin Guptill Retires from International Cricket

  • New Zealand batter Martin Guptill announced his retirement from international cricket, though he will continue to play in the T20 leagues around the world.
  • Guptill is the first Kiwi player to score a hundred on ODI debut and he also became the first New Zealander to score an ODI double-century during the ICC World Cup 2015 when he smashed 237 in the quarter-final win over the West Indies at Wellington.

Anju Bobby George Named Chairperson of AFI Athletes Commission

  • Long-jump great Anju Bobby George was named chairperson of the Athletics Federation of India's (AFI) nine-member athletes commission that features six women, with javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra being its most prominent male member.
  • The other women in the new panel are runner Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, discus thrower Krishna Poonia, hurdler M. D. Valsamma, steeplechaser Sudha Singh, and runner Sunita Rani. George, a 2003 world championships bronze-winner, is also a senior vice president in the AFI.
  • All of them are retired, and their induction is a noteworthy milestone in the AFI's quest for gender parity in its setup. The previous commission featured four women.

Bahadur Singh Sagoo New as AFI President

  • Asian Games gold medalist and Padma Shri awardee Bahadur Singh Sagoo was elected unanimously as the new president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Sagoo, who won gold in shot put at the 2002 Asian Games, took over from outgoing president Adille Sumariwalla, who stepped down after serving three consecutive terms.

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports Mansukh Mandaviya chaired the 152nd Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) meeting at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in the presence of eminent sportspersons, administrators and coaches.
  • The main agenda of the meeting was introduction of members for the newly-constituted MOC and planning for Los Angeles 2028 towards improving India's medal tally at the Olympics.
  • Union Minister emphasised on employing a 360-degree approach to improve the Indian sports ecosystem with consolidated efforts from National Sports Federations (NSFs), State governments, Corporates, Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Anahat Wins British Junior Open Squash Title

  • India's rising squash star Anahat Singh won the U-17 title in the British Junior Open with a fighting win over Egypt's Malika El Karaksy. The Indian, seeded first, came from behind to beat her second-seeded opponent 4-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11,5, 11-3. Anahat has won the tournament previously in the U-11 and U-15 categories.

Bollywood Actor Abhishek Bachchan Joins as Co-Owner of European T20 Premier League

  • Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan joined the ICC-sanctioned European T20 Premier League (ETPL) as a co-owner. The tournament, a privately-owned franchise competition, is in partnership with three cricketing nations: Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands.
  • The development of the ETPL has been led by an interim working group comprising representatives from the participating cricket boards and strategic partner, Rules Sport Tech, who are working alongside funding partners. This group is tasked with overseeing key decision-making processes and establishing an administrative entity to manage the tournament.
