Fourth Mumbai Open to Kickstart from February 1

  • The fourth edition of the Mumbai Open was launched at the iconic Cricket Club of India.
  • The tournament is being organised by the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) and will be held at the hard courts of the Cricket Club of India (CCI).
  • The WTA 125 tournament will commence on February 1 with the qualifying round, while the main draw of the event will begin on February 3 with the finals scheduled on February 9, at the Cricket Club of India.

Dream Sports Foundation Announces Second Edition of U-17 Football Championship

  • Dream Sports Foundation announced the second edition of their under-17 club football tournament, following the success of the first edition of the Dream Sports Championship.
  • Set to begin in February 2025, the championship will be hosted across six cities, featuring Regional Rounds and a National Final, providing a platform for young footballers to showcase their skills.
  • The 2025 tournament will introduce a girls' U-17 Championship at the National Finals, highlighting DSF's commitment to promoting diversity in grassroots sports. The tournament will also assist the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) in identifying potential youth talent for the national team.
  • The first phase, scheduled from February 2-8, 2025, will see matches taking place in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru. This phase will set the stage for intense competition as teams vie for a spot in the next round. The second phase, from February 10-14, 2025, will shift the action to Guwahati and Goa, where the remaining teams will battle it out for a place in the National Finals.

Australia Clinches ICC Women's Championship Trophy

  • Australia has once again asserted its dominance in women's cricket by winning the ICC Women's Championship for the third consecutive time. The team was presented with the prestigious ICC Women's Championship Trophy in Melbourne after emerging victorious in the 10-team competition that serves as a pathway to the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025. Captain Alyssa Healy received the trophy from Cricket Australia Chair and ICC Director Mike Baird.
  • The championship, first introduced in 2014, has played a crucial role in expanding the women's game and ensuring more frequent bilateral series. The 2022-25 cycle saw Australia securing the top position with 39 points from 24 matches, followed by India, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand, who also qualified directly for the 2025 Women's World Cup. The remaining teams will compete in a Qualifier tournament to secure the final two spots.
  • The first two editions (2014-16 & 2017-20) featured 8 teams:
  • Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies.

Manush Shah, Diya Chitale Crowned National Table Tennis Champions

  • The 2025 Senior National Table Tennis Championships concluded at the Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium in Surat, witnessing thrilling performances. Manush Shah and Diya Chitale claimed the men's and women's singles titles, respectively, showcasing remarkable skill and resilience. Both champions represented the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and delivered exceptional performances in their respective finals.
  • Manush Shah defeated Payas Jain with a 4-1 scoreline (10-12, 11-6, 11-6, 12-10, 11-8).

Khelo India Winter Games 2025: Ladakh Finishes on Top

  • Host Ladakh topped the Khelo India Winter Games after securing two gold medals on the final day, swelling their tally to four, as the first phase of the tournament concluded.
  • Thirteen gold medals were at stake in the first phase. The second and final phase will be held in J&K's Gulmarg from February 22 to 25.

Bumrah Crowned ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year

  • Indian pace sensation was crowned winner of the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year 2024 for his phenomenal performances in 2024. Jasprit Bumrah was named as the ICC Men's Test Cricketer of the Year 2024.
  • Bumrah pipped the challenge from Travis Head, Harry Brook and Joe Root to be crowned the ICC Men's Cricketer of 2024. The speedster took 86 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 13.76 as he was the star for the Indian team during the T20 World Cup 2024 win and several other series.

India's Jyothi Yarraji Wins Gold Medal in Women's 60m Indoor Hurdles in France

  • India's Jyothi Yarraji rewrote her own national record in the women's 60m indoor hurdles at the Meeting de Nantes Métropole 2025 athletics meet in France.
  • The 25-year-old Indian athlete crossed the finish line in 8.07 seconds and beat her previous national record of 8.12 seconds.
  • South Africa's Marione Fourie, a silver medallist at the African Championships last year, came second in the final with a timing of 8.05 seconds, followed by Finland's Saara Keskitalo, who clocked 8.13 seconds.

Geoff Allardice Steps Down as ICC CEO

  • Australian Geoff Allardice stepped down as the ICC Chief Executive, just weeks ahead of the Champions Trophy ODI tournament.
  • He joined the ICC in 2012 as General Manager of Cricket, coming from Cricket Australia, where he served as Cricket Operations Manager. He was appointed CEO of the ICC in November 2021, after having served as acting CEO for eight months.

Steve Smith Scripts history; Joins Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting in Elite 10000-club

  • Steve Smith became the 15th batter in history of cricket to complete 10000 runs in Test cricket on day 1 of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Galle.
  • He reached his milestone in his 205th innings. In the process, the stand-in-captain also became the fifth-fastest batter to reach 10000 Test runs in the list which includes greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ricky Ponting and more.
  • Steve Smith also became the second fastest Australian to reach 10000 Test runs after Ricky Ponting, who completed the milestone in 196 innings. The trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Kumar Sangakkara lead the charts who completed the feat in 195 innings each.

Jannik Sinner Wins His Second Australian Open Title

  • Jannik Sinner claimed his second consecutive Australian Open championship, never facing a single break point and using his complete game to outplay and frustrate Alexander Zverev for a 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory in the final.
  • Sinner, a 23-year-old Italian, is the youngest man to leave Melbourne Park with the trophy two years in a row since Jim Courier in 1992-93.

Makarov Sergey Aleksandrovich Appointed as Indian Foreign Javelin Throw Coach

  • Two time Olympic bronze medallist 51-year-old Makarov Sergey Aleksandrovich was appointed foreign javelin coach for Indian javelin throwers, according to a statement released by Athletics Federation of India.
  • Aleksandrovich, who has a career best throw of 92.61m, comes from an athletics family with his father Aleksandr Fyodorovich Makarov having won the silver medal in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
  • Aleksandrovich will be based at Patiala and will oversee the preparations of Indian javelin throwers at the national camp as well interact with Indian coaches for the three-year-cycle as per AFI.

Smriti Mandhana Named ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024

  • Smriti Mandhana was named ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year for her outstanding performance in 2024. Smriti Mandhana was named ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year in 2018 and 2022 as well.
  • She put several batting stalwarts, including the likes of South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt, England's Tammy Beaumont and West Indies' Hayley Matthews, to shade. Her tally of 747 runs in 13 innings is the highest among the leading run-getters in Women's ODIs last year, way ahead of Wolvaardt (697), Beaumont (554) and Matthews (469).

  • Indian left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh was crowned the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year 2024 for his influential role in the team's World Cup title triumph, which cemented his reputation as one of the leading short format bowlers.
