  • At Khelo India University Games in Bengaluru the Jain University continues to be in the helm winning the highest number of medals. With 16 Gold, Five Silver and three Bronze medals, it occupies the first place in the medal tally currently.
  • Siva Sridhar was the star performer winning seven Gold and Two Silver medals in the pool. His medal haul is more than that of the previous edition's most successful athletes Siddhant Sejwal and Sadhvi Dhuri who had won five Gold medals each.

Ben Stokes Appointed as Captain of England's Test Cricket Team

  • Ben Stokes was appointed as captain of England's Test cricket team. The all-rounder replaced Joe Root, who quit the role having only won one of its last 17 Test matches.Stokes has just returned to the team after a spell out for mental-health reasons.
  • It is the first big decision by Rob Key, the former England batsman who was recently hired as managing director of men's cricket in England.

  • Ann Mariya set a new National record in the 87 kg women weightlifting competition in Khelo India University Games at Bengaluru . The Gold winning weightlifter from Mangalore University lifted 129 kg to break Manpreet Kaur's clean and jerk record of 128 kgs at the National Championships earlier this year. Ann Mariya was trained at the SAI National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
  • Ann, who started her sporting career in Powerlifting, was convinced to enter the arena of Weightlifting by her mother to reduce weight. But soon, she started enjoying the sport and began training intensely to get better at it.

Nehal Wadhera Sets New Record, Smashes 578 Runs

  • Wadhera bested the 66-year-old record for the highest total in a state-organised tournament, which was previously held by former Punjab cricketer Chaman Lal Malhotra. He also made it to the list of the all-time highest individual scorers in any format of cricket globally at No. 3. The 21-year-old, representing Ludhiana, smashed 578 against Bathinda U-23 in the semifinals of the Punjab State Inter-district tournament at the GRD Cricket Ground in Ludhiana. Nehal is a former member of the Indian U-19 team. During the tour to Sri Lanka in July 2018, he had struck two half-centuries, including 81 on his international U-19 debut. In the 2017-18 Cooch Behar Trophy, he had made 540 runs with six half-centuries.
  • A score of the magnitude of 578 in 414 balls i.e at a strike rate of 139 is unheard of in long cricket history in the world. Nehal hit (79) 4s and (37) 6s which is maximum in a single innings in cricket history.

Max Verstappen Named Laureus Sportsman of the Year 2022

  • F1 champion Max Verstappen was named the 2022 Laureus Sportsman of the Year while Jamaican Olympic sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah was named Sportswoman of the Year. The awards recognise the greatest sporting achievements of 2021, one of the highlights of which was the European Championship victory by the Italian Men's Football Team who won their second Laureus Team of the Year Award as a result.

Badminton Asia Championships 2022 Begins in Manila

  • Badminton Asia Championships 2022, the biggest on the continent, kicked off in Manila, Philippines. Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and young sensation Lakshya Sen will lead India's challenge at the six-day event. The focus will also be on London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal as she looks to claim her fourth medal at the Championships. But HS Prannoy has withdrawn from the men's singles event due to an injury.
  • In the men's doubles, India will reply on Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also has veteran Indonesian pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan and reigning world champions Hoki Takuro and Kobayashi Yugo from Japan among the contenders.

Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh Wins Menorca Open Chess Tournament

  • Teenaged Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh won the Menorca Open chess tournament, his second title win in as many weeks. Indian players dominated, taking seven spots in the top 10 with Aryan Chopra finishing runner-up. The 15-year old GM scored six points from seven rounds to clinch first place and earned 1,600 Euros as prize money. Gukesh defeated fellow Indian B Adhiban in the seventh and final round to cap an impressive performance during which he remained undefeated.
  • Gukesh also gained 13.4 ELO points and climbed into the top 80 of the world rankings. India's Aryan Chopra finished second with 5.5 points while Armenia's Shant Sargsyan took the third place. Haik M Matrirosyan (Armenina) bagged the fourth spot with the same number of points but due to an inferior tie-break score.

Archery World Cup: Tarundeep Rai, Ridhi Phor Clinch Recurve Mixed Team Gold in Final

  • Pairing up for the first time ever, two-time Olympian Rai and the young Ridhi trailed twice 0-2 and 2-4 but held their nerve to close out the tie 5-4 (35-37, 36-33, 39-40, 38-37) (18-17) enroute their maiden gold medal. India thus concluded its campaign in the first event of the calendar year with two gold medals, the first coming through the compound men's team of Abhishek Verma, Rajat Chauhan and Aman Saini.
  • Incidentally for the 38-year-old Rai, who won the Asian Games silver in Guangzhou 2010, this was his first-ever mixed team medal in the World Cup.
  • And for 17-year-old Ridhi, this was her first ever World Cup medal as the duo showed amazing character to come back twice and seal the issue in the shoot-off with two 9s. The British duo of Bryony Pitman and Alex Wise shot 9 and 8.

Vice President Inaugurates Khelo India University Games-2021 in Bengaluru

  • Vice president M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated Khelo India University Games in Bengaluru. This is the biggest sporting event post Covid. Union Sports minister Anurag Thakur and Governor Thawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai were among the guests during the inaugural event.
  • Acrobatics, laser show and cultural events depicting the heritage and traditions of Karnataka were part of the inaugural event. Commemorative postage stamp was released to mark the occasion. For the second edition of Khelo India University Games over 4500 sportspersons from over 200 universities will take part in 20 disciplines. Two new disciplines – Yogasana and Mallakhamb have been added to this year's games.

Andrey Rublev Beats Novak Djokovic to Win Serbia Open Title

  • Andrey Rublev defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-0 to win the Serbia Open for his third title of the season. The second-seeded Russian player dug deep to stop Djokovic from mounting another comeback as he prevented the top-ranked Serb from claiming his first title of 2022.
  • Before this tournament, the 20-time Grand Slam champion opened his clay-court season with a surprising loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Monte Carlo Masters, his first match since being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championships in February, 2022.
