India Secure Olympic Team Quotas in Archery; Deepika, Tarun set for 4th Games appearances

  • India secured men's and women's team quotas in archery for this year's Paris Olympics based on the World Archery rankings that were updated on June 24.
  • India topped the rankings among the non-qualified nations in both men's and women's section to seal their team quotas.

Records Tumble after Rohit Sharma's Disdainful 92 against Australia

  • Rohit Sharma was at his sizzling best as he tormented Australian bowlers in the final match of the Super 8 stage to put India in the driver's seat. Rohit smashed eight sixes and seven boundaries en route his 92-run innings off 41 deliveries.
  • Every Australian bowler, bar Josh Hazlewood was hit to all parts of the park. Australia's premier strike bowler, Mitchell Starc faced the ultimate wrath of Rohit who smashed him for 29 runs in one over.
  • During the innings, Rohit shattered Yuvraj Singh's record for the most sixes in an innings of a T20 World Cup match. Hitman also broke the record for the fastest fifty by a captain in T20 World Cup history, previously held by ex-Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful.

AFMS Officers Create History at 43rd World Medical & Health Games in Saint-Tropez, France

  • Four officers from the Armed Forces Medical Service (AFMS) of India achieved unprecedented success at the 43rd World Medical and Health Games in Saint-Tropez, France. Lt Col Sanjeev Malik, Maj Anish George, Capt Stephen Sebastian, and Capt Dania James collectively secured a record-breaking 32 medals, comprising 19 gold, 9 silver, and 4 bronze. These achievements underscore their exceptional performance in the world's largest sporting event for health professionals.
  • Lt Col Sanjeev Malik dominated the Above 35 years Male Category with five gold medals in events such as 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, Cross Country, and 4x100m Relay.
  • Maj Anish George excelled in the Under 35 years Male Category, earning four golds, six silvers, and two bronzes across a diverse range of disciplines including sprints, throws, and powerlifting.
  • Capt Stephen Sebastian secured an impressive six gold medals in the Under 35 years Male Category, showcasing prowess in events like 100m, 200m, 400m, Long Jump, Hammer Throw, and 4x100m Relay.
  • Capt Dania James achieved four gold, three silver, and two bronze in the Under 35 years Female Category, excelling in events like sprints, throws, badminton, and powerlifting.

Spanish GP: Max Verstappen Finishes Top of the Podium

  • Three-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen survived a close scare from McLaren's Lando Norris and secured the top podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix to extend his championship lead.
  • The race was special for Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton who returned to the podium for the first time this season, and the first time since the Mexican Grand Prix last year (2023).

Table Tennis: Sreeja Akula Wins Singles and Doubles WTT Titles in Lagos

  • Sreeja Akula created history at the WTT Contender in Lagos, Nigeria by becoming the first Indian to clinch a singles title at a Contender level. Impressively, she also won the women's doubles title, becoming the first Indian to win two titles at the same event at this level of World Table Tennis events.
  • It was also the first time that India won a men's doubles title after the Surat duo of Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar beat local favourites Azeez Solanke and Olajide Omotayo 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-8).
  • In the women's doubles final, Sreeja combined with her Paris Olympics teammate Archana Kamath and defeated compatriots Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 12-10).
  • In the women's singles final Dreeja beat her Chinese opponent Ding Yijie, with a 4-1 win (10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6).

India Clinches Gold in Compound Team Event at Antalya Archery World Cup 2024

  • In archery, India's Jyoti Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur, and Aditi Swami clinched gold in the compound team event at the Antalya Archery World Cup 2024 in Turkey. The women's trio defeated Estonia 232–229 in the summit clash. With this victory, the Indian team completed a clean sweep this season, bagging all three World Cup Stage gold medals in the compound team event. Earlier, the Indian women's compound archery team, ranked world No. 1, defeated Italy at the World Cup 2024 Stage 1 in Shanghai. While in Stage 2, India beat the Republic of Korea in Yecheon in the final.

Odisha to Sponsor Hockey India Till 2036

  • The Odisha government announced the extension of its sponsorship for Hockey India until 2036 – a year that marks the centenary of the state's formation in 1936.
  • The decision was taken after a Hockey India delegation met new Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in Bhubaneswar.
  • Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh said that the state government has consistently been a pillar of strength for the sport. "The decision to consider extending our partnership until 2036 underscores their dedication to sports and youth development," he said.

Justin Sammons New Head Coach of Zimbabwe's Men's Cricket Team

  • Zimbabwe Cricket appointed South African Justin Sammons as its new men's head coach.
  • Sammons was a former batting coach with his home country's national team, the Proteas.
  • Dave Houghton resigned as Zimbabwe's head coach last year (2023) after the country failed to qualify for the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup in the US and West Indies.
  • Sammons will lead Zimbabwe for the first time in a five-match T20 series against India in Zimbabwe.
  • Dion Ebrahim, a former Zimbabwe batter, is Sammons' assistant coach. Ebrahim represented Zimbabwe in 29 tests and 82 ODIs between 2001 and 2005, and has been a part of the coaching staff with the New Zealand senior men's team.

Pat Cummins Becomes Second Australian to Claim a T20 World Cup Hattrick

  • Australia's Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins created history during his side's Super 8 clash versus Bangladesh by becoming only the second Aussie, after Brett Lee, to claim a T20 World Cup hattrick. Cummins achieved the feat during the first ball of the last over after dismissing Towhid Hridoy. In his previous over, he had removed the likes of Mahmudullah and Mehedi Hasan on the last two deliveries. Riding on his 3 for 29, Australia restricted Bangladesh for 140/8 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua on June 20. Overall, he became the fourth Australian with a hattrick in the format.

Suryakumar Yadav Retains His Spot as Top-ranked Batter in T20s

  • Australia's Marcus Stoinis toppled Afghanistan's Mohammad Nabi as the number one all-rounder in the latest ICC T20 rankings.

  • The Indian National Ultimate Frisbee team put up a valiant effort in the final of the Asia Oceanic Beach Ultimate Championships (AOBUC) 2024, and finished as runners-up after a hard-fought match against the Philippines with a final score of 9-12. This marked a historic milestone for Indian Ultimate Frisbee as the national team reached the final for the first time, demonstrating significant growth and potential on the international stage. The tournament featured 16 teams from across Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • The Indian team's path to the final was highlighted by a remarkable victory over Japan in the semi-finals.
