Global Chess League to Hold Second Edition in London in October

  • After a successful first season in Dubai, the Global Chess League will return for another edition, this time in London. The highly anticipated second edition of Tech Mahindra Global Chess League will take place in London, England from October 3 to 12, 2024. It will take place at Friends House in central London.
  • The Global Chess League, a joint initiative between the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and Tech Mahindra, a leading global provider of technology consulting and digital solutions to enterprises across industries, is set for a highly anticipated second edition in London.

Shafali Verma Scores Fastest Double Century in Women Test Cricket

  • India opener Shafali Verma smashed the fastest double century in the history of women's Test cricket, eclipsing Annabel Sutherland of Australia during the one-off Test against South Africa.
  • Shafali scored her double ton off just 194 balls, bettering Sutherland's feat, which came off 248 balls against South Africa earlier this year. This was also the maiden international three-digit score for Shafali across all three formats.

David Warner Retires From International Cricket

  • One of the greatest batters of all time, David Warner's international career ended on a bitter note after Australia failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals, exiting in the Super 8 stage.
  • Australia's premature elimination from the tournament also confirmed Warner's international exit. The opening batter had already confirmed that the T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies would be his last in the Australian shirt.

Indian Track Athlete Kiran Pahal Qualifies For Paris Olympics

  • Indian track athlete Kiran Pahal qualified for the Paris Olympics in the women's 400m event. Kiran from Haryana clocked 50.92 seconds in the semi-finals at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Panchkula. The Olympic qualification mark was set at 50.95 seconds.
  • Kiran also became the second fastest Indian runner in the women's 400m after Hima Das, who set the national record of 50.79 seconds at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. The Inter-State Championships were the last chance for India's athletes to make the Olympic cut.

Kapil Dev Takes over as President of Professional Golf Tour of India

  • World Cup-winning former India cricket captain Kapil Dev took over as the new president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), an elevation that marks a fresh beginning for the iconic player who also excelled as an amateur golfer.
  • Kapil Dev, who was already a member of the PGTI Board as its vice-president, was chosen unanimously and replaced H. R. Srinivasan, whose tenure came to an end.

Chris Silverwood Resigns as Sri Lanka's Head Coach

  • Sri Lanka's head coach Chris Silverwood stepped down from the role following the team's dismal outing in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Former captain Mahela Jayawardene also resigned from the post of the consultant coach.
  • During Silverwood's tenure, Lanka won the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 and also reached the final of the 50-over Asia Cup last year (2023) where they lost to India.

Bharat Centre of Olympic Research and Education Launched

  • The Bharat Centre of Olympic Research and Education (BCORE) was inaugurated at the Rashtriya Raksha University in Gujarat's Gandhinagar district. Speaking at the inauguration event, Indian Olympic Association president and legendary sprinter PT Usha said that the centre will serve as a hub of knowledge, innovation and performance in the Indian sports ecosystem.
  • Bharat Centre of Olympic Research and Education (BCORE) within Rashtriya Raksha University, India, has attained official recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as an academic centre promoting Olympic values.

Delhi Judoka Tulika Secures Paris Quota

  • Commonwealth Games silver medallist Tulika Maan secured a Paris Olympics quota for India in judo, according to the international body's list.
  • The International Judo Federation (IJF) published a list of judokas who have qualified for the Paris Games and the 25-year-old Tulika's name featured in the +78 kg category.
  • Tulika was ranked 36th with 1345 points.
  • The next step will take place on July 2 when the NOCs (National Olympic Committees) will have to nominate which athletes will represent them, knowing that only one judoka per NOC can participate in the Games in each weight category.

BCCI Announces India Squad for Zimbabwe Tour; Shubman Gill Named Captain

  • The BCCI announced the Indian squad for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. The T20I series is starting on July 6.
  • A Men's Selection Committee selected a 15-player squad for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. India will visit Harare in the first week of July and participate in the T20I series against the hosts.
  • Shubman Gill will lead a revamped India team for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in early July, following the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.
  • The squad includes only two players from the main T20 World Cup team: Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson.
  • Players such as Gill, Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed, who are reserves in the T20 World Cup touring party, have also been included in the squad.
