Paris Paralympic Games 2024: Britain's Sarah Storey Wins Record 18th Gold Medal

  • Sarah Storey extended her record as the most successful British Paralympian, winning the women's C5 time trial at the Paris Games to claim her 18th gold medal.
  • It was 46-year-old Storey's 13th Paralympic gold medal in cycling, with the other five won in swimming.
  • She overtook swimmer Mike Kenny's record of 16 Paralympic gold medals.
  • Storey completed the course in 20 minutes and 22.15 seconds, beating French silver medallist Heidi Gaugain by more than four seconds.

Dharambir Wind India's 5th Gold Medal

  • India's Dharambir won the gold medal in the men's club throw F51 event at the Paralympics 2024. Dharambir at the Stade de France - Seat DT/Club, finished on top with the best throw of 34.92m, shattering the Asian record. Pranav Soorma, another Indian, bagged the silver medal with the best attempt of 34.59m in the event.
  • India scripted history by securing its first-ever 1-2 finish on the podium in a track and field event at the Paralympics. The gold medal that Dharambir won was also India's first medal in club throw in the history of the quadrennial sporting spectacle and India's fifth gold medal at the Paralympics.

Kapil Parmar, India's First-ever Para Judo Medallist

  • India's Kapil Parmar created history when he won a bronze medal at the Paralympics, becoming India's first-ever para judo medallist. He defeated Brazil's Elielton de Oliveira in the men's 60kg (J1) to achieve that feat.
  • The athlete had won a silver medal in the Asian Para Games 2022 and a gold in the Commonwealth Championships in 2019. He also won gold in the IBSA Judo Grand Prix Antalya in 2024 as well as a gold in IBSA Judo Grand Prix Tbilisi in the same year. In 2023 he nabbed another gold in the IBSA Judo Grand Prix Alexandria and also won a bronze in the IBSA World Games in 2023.

Nigerian Makes Badminton History for Africa

  • Eighteen-year-old Mariam Eniola Bolaji is the first African to win a medal in badminton at the Paralympics - a feat yet to be achieved at the Olympics by an African competitor.
  • The Nigerian won bronze in the women's SL3 Para-badminton.
  • Bolaji has reduced mobility in her left leg after it was damaged in a car crash when she was a child.

Harvinder Singh Wins a Historic Archery Gold for India

  • Harvinder Singh went where no Indian archer had gone before in the history of the Paralympics or Olympics. In a sport that has been synonymous with heartbreaks and missed opportunities over the years, Harvinder clinched gold in Para Archery – Men's Individual Recurve Open event at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
  • Harvinder did so by saving his best for the last in the final against Poland's Lukasz Ciszek. He shot 9, 9, 10 in Set 1. He shot 9, 9, 10 in Set 2. Then, with the finish line in sight, he shot 10, 10, 9. In recurve archery over 70m, to not shoot a single arrow outside the gold zone on the target was a stunning display of high-pressure match play.

Anuya Prasad Wins Gold at World Deaf Shooting Championship

  • In a gripping final at the second World Deaf Shooting Championship in Hannover, Germany, teenage shooter Anuya Prasad from Jaipur secured the gold medal in the women's air pistol event.
  • The 17-year-old, a first-year Visual Arts student at Rajasthan University, clinched victory with a nail-biting last shot scoring 10.3, narrowly beating Sofia Olenych of Ukraine by just 0.1 point. Anuya finished with a total of 232.2 points (552), while Olenych scored 232.1 points (551). Ukrainian shooter Halyna Mosina took the bronze with 208.5 points (554).
  • India's Pranjali Dhumal, who had set a world record with a qualification score of 568, ended up fourth in the final. Despite her impressive performance, she was edged out by another Ukrainian competitor, Halyna Mosina.

Sachin Clinches Silver in Shot Put

  • World champion shot-putter Sachin Khilari smashed the Asian record en route a silver as India's track-and-field athletes continued to surpass expectations in what is turning out to be the country's best ever performance at the Paralympics 2024.
  • Khilari pulled off 16.32m throw in his second attempt of the F46 category final to better his own Asian record of 16.30m which he set in May while winning gold in the World Para-Athletics Championships in Japan.
  • Greg Stewart of Canada defended his Tokyo Paralympics gold with a throw of 16.38m, while Luka Bakovic of Croatia took the bronze with 16.27m.

Brendon McCullum England's New White-ball Coach

  • England Test coach Brendon McCullum was named their white-ball coach as well, making him the first all-format coach of England since his Test predecessor Chris Silverwood. McCullum's appointment came after the sacking of white-ball coach Matthew Mott under whom England failed to defend their 50-over and 20-over World Cup titles.
  • McCullum will start his twin role from January 2025. Interim white-ball head coach Marcus Trescothick will fulfil his role during the upcoming Australia series as well as the Caribbean tour in November as well.

Deepthi Jeevanji Wins Paralympics Bronze for India in Women's 400m T20

  • Deepthi Jeevanji clinched a bronze for India in the Paris 2024 Paralympics in the women's 400m T20 classification final. It was India's 16th medal at the Games.
  • She clocked a sensation 55.82 seconds in the final, finishing behind her counterparts from Ukraine and Turkey.
  • Deepthi hails from Telangana. She was born in the Kalleda village in the Warangal district. Having taken an interest in athletics from a young age, she overcame her intellectual impairment to shine on the international stage.

NorthEast United FC Claims Historic Durand Cup Title

  • Guwahati-based NorthEast United Football Club etched their names in Indian football history by clinching their maiden Durand Cup title. In a thrilling final that went to a penalty shootout, they defeated the defending champions, Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG), 4-3. The match took place at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

  • The Durand Cup, established in 1888 at Shimla by the British Indian Army, is the oldest football tournament in India and Asia. Named after the then-foreign secretary of British India, Mortimer Durand, the tournament has a rich history and has witnessed many iconic moments in Indian football.

  • Indian para-badminton players Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass clinched silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the women's singles SU5 class at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Their outstanding performances not only showcased their exceptional talent but also marked a historic moment for Indian badminton.
  • The two medals won by Thulasimathi and Manisha contributed to India's growing success at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

NorthEast United beats Mohun Bagan SG to win Durand Cup 2024

  • NorthEast United FC etched its name on the winner's plate of the Durand Cup as it won the 133rd edition of Asia's oldest football tournament by overpowering defending Mohun Bagan Super Giant 4-3 via a tie-breaker, at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Saturday. Mohun Bagan established a two-goal lead in the opening half but NorthEast fought back after the break, scoring two goals in three minutes to make it 2-2 at the end of the regulation time. With no extra time allotted, the match went straight into penalty shootouts where NorthEast United goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh made two saves to turn the tables on Mohun Bagan and secure the maiden Durand Cup crown for his side.

Paralympics 2024: Nitesh Kumar Wins Gold in Para Badminton Men's Singles SL3

  • Nitesh Kumar won gold for India in the para badminton men's singles SL3 event of the Paris 2024 Paralympics held at the La Chapelle Arena in Paris on Monday. The first seed beat Great Britain's second-seeded Daniel Bethell 21-14, 18-21, 23-21 in the gold medal match to win India its second gold medal of the ongoing Paralympics. "I still don't feel it. May be when I go to the podium and the national anthem is played, it will sink in," Nitesh said after the match. The SL3 category includes players that have moderately restricted movement in one or both limbs or the absence of limbs. The game is played in a half-width court with no restriction on the shots played.
  • Nitesh and Daniel began Game 1 with long rallies characteristic of the SL3 category and after a neck-and-neck battle till the midway stage, the Indian shuttler wrested the momentum, speeding to a 21-14 win.
  • The second game too saw a close battle but the 29-year-old Indian stuttered in the final few points of Game 2, forcing a deciding game.
  • "I have lost such situation against him and I didn't want to make the same mistakes. I had lost my calm in the past so I told myself that I should keep fighting for each point. At 19-20 in decider also I told myself to stick in there and make him earn the point," Nitesh added.
  • A 19-16 lead in the decider saw Nitesh almost within touching distance of the gold but Daniel kept him on his toes, the two exchanging gold medal points before the Indian finally triumphed.

Nishad Kumar Wins High Jump Silver

  • Team India athlete Nishad Kumar bagged a silver medal in the men's high jump - T47 category final at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
  • With a leap of 2.04 metres, this is also Kumar's season-best performance. It noted that he bagged a silver medal during the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics as well.
  • United States of America (USA) athlete Roderick Townsend-Roberts extended his lead over Kumar with a season-best jump of 2.08m and won the gold medal, and Russia's Georgii Margiev took the bronze.

Nicholas Pooran Overtakes Chris Gayle for Most T20 Sixes in a Calendar Year

  • West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran is having the year of his life and has broken his fellow countryman Chris Gayle's record of most T20 sixes in a calendar year. Pooran scored 97 while playing for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL), hitting nine sixes in his innings.
  • In total, Pooran now has 139 sixes in 58 T20 matches he has played so far in the year 2024. Gayle had hit 135 sixes in 35 T20 matches he had played in 2015.
  • With a quarter of the year still left in 2024, Pooran is sure to have his record improved from the current 139 sixes.
