Tanvi Sharma, Pranauv Ram, Rounak Chouhan to headline Smt Krishna Khaitan Memorial badminton

  • Former U-17 national champion and member of this year's Asian Championships-winning Indian women's team, Tanvi Sharma is among the top contenders in the girls' U-19 category at the 31st Yonex Sunrise Smt Krishna Khaitan Memorial All India Junior Ranking Prize Money Tournament to be held from September 12-19.
  • The tournament, which is being organised by Express Shuttle Club Trust under the aegis of Haryana Badminton Association, is one of the junior events on the Badminton Association of India (BAI) domestic calendar and will be played at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Sector 3 Panchkula, Haryana.

India Bids for 2030 Youth Olympics

  • Mansukh Mandaviya, India's Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, announced India's bid for the 2030 Youth Olympics during his speech at the of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) 44th General Assembly . India will compete against Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Thailand, Mongolia, Russia, Ukraine, and Bosnia and Herzegovina for the hosting rights. This bid is seen as a precursor to India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympics.
  • Mandaviya detailed India's sports initiatives, emphasizing the 'Khelo India' scheme, 'Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)', and 'Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action (ASMITA)'. He noted the government's substantial increase in the sports budget from USD 143 million in 2014-15 to approximately USD 417 million today. This funding has led to record-breaking performances at the Asian Games and Asian Para Games.

Sinner Storms Past Fritz to Win First US Open Title

Khel Utsav 2024 Organised by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting

  • In celebration of the birth anniversary of Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand and in alignment with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports' National Sports Day 2024, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting organised "Khel Utsav 2024" which concluded on August 30, 2024. The event took place at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.
  • The inaugural edition featured tournaments in four sports: Cricket, Hockey, Badminton, and Table Tennis. Over 200 officials and staff of the Ministry actively participated, contributing to the event's success. Future editions are planned to include additional sports.
  • A ceremony to distribute the Major Dhyan Chand trophies was held in September 2024, at the PIB Conference Hall, Shastri Bhawan. The event was attended by Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Sanjay Jaju, along with other senior officials of the Ministry.

Randhir Singh Becomes Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) President

  • Randhir Singh, a five-time Olympian and sports administrator, became the first Indian to become president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) at the 44th OCA general assembly in New Delhi. The 77-year-old had been the OCA acting president since 2021, and was filling in for Kuwait's Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, who was handed a 15-year ban from sports administration in May this year (2024) over ethics breaches.
  • Singh's elevation as president from acting president was a matter of mere attendance as he ran unopposed for the 2024-2028 term. He required a 50% plus one majority from the 45 member associations gathered at the Bharat Mandapam on Sunday. Randhir received 44 of the 45 available votes with one abstention. All other five vice-presidents and executive committee members elected were also voted in unopposed.

Vikram Rathour, Rangana Herath Join New Zealand's Backroom Staff for Afghanistan and Sri Lanka Tests

  • Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour and legendary Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath joined New Zealand team to help them prepare for their upcoming Tests in Asia. Notably, New Zealand will take on Afghanistan in a one-off Test from September 9 in Greater Noida, India and will further lock horns with Sri Lanka and India for five Tests.

Paris Paralympics Closing Ceremony: Harvinder, Preeti India's Flag Bearers

Praveen Kumar Wind Gold Sixth Gold Medal for India at Paris Paralympics

  • India officially bettered its Paralympics performance having clinched its sixth gold medal. India's Praveen Kumar won the gold medal in the Men's high Jump T64 event meaning India now has one more gold medal in Paris than it had at previous best in Tokyo. Praveen with an attempt of 2.08 metres won the gold.

Rahul Dravid Appointed Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals

  • Rajasthan Royals announced the appointment of Rahul Dravid as a head coach after signing a multi-year contract.
  • Dravid's tenure as India's head coach ended in June after he helped the Men in Blue win the T20 World Cup, their first ICC title since the Champions trophy in 2013.
  • The former Royals' captain and coach spent five seasons with the franchise from 2011 to 2015, and will commence with the team immediately, working with Royals' director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara to implement the franchise's overall cricketing strategy.
  • Dravid was the captain of the Royals in IPL 2012 and 2013 and then was the team director and mentor for them in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
