Sumit Nagal to Compete in World Tennis League

  • India's top singles player Sumit Nagal will feature in the upcoming World Tennis League (WTL) which will have many global stars such as world number five Daniil Medvedev and women's US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka.
  • It is not yet known which team Nagal, ranked 83 in the world, would play for in the League, scheduled to take place at the iconic Etihad Arena, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from December 19 to 22.
  • The WTL features two Olympic gold medallists, five Grand Slam champions, six of the top 12 male players, and six of the top 10 female players, including world No. 1 and French Open champion Iga Swiatek.

India Win 25m Pistol Team Event

  • Indian junior shooting team continued to showcase the depth of talent, winning its 11th gold of the on-going International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championship in Lima, Peru as the trio of Mukesh Nelavalli, Raajwardan Patil and Harsimar Singh Rattha clinched the team competition in the junior men's 25m rapid-fire pistol (RFP).

To Address Indian Football's Height Issue, AIFF Turns to Rajasthan

  • Indian football has historically struggled to find tall players, but now the national federation is targeting specific regions in the country to address the issue.
  • Most of the country's top players — including retired Sunil Chhetri and current sensation Lallianzuala Chhangte — haven't been among the tallest. It's a disadvantage in set-pieces and a midfield lacking muscle often gets easily run over.
  • To rectify this anomaly, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is looking west — towards Rajasthan, to be precise.
  • AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey has tasked club officials in Rajasthan to scout for tall players in the state that doesn't have a rich football history.
  • One of the clubs involved in the scouting process is Rajasthan United.

Usman Qadir Announces Retirement from Pakistan Cricket

  • Usman Qadir, son of late cricket legend Abdul Qadir, announced his retirement from Pakistan cricket at 31. Making his decision public, Qadir expressed his heartfelt gratitude while taking immense pleasure in representing Pakistan as he steps aside from the game.
  • Qadir, a leg spinner, represented Pakistan in 26 matches, including 25 T20Is and 1 ODI.
  • Qadir made his international debut against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi in 2020, with his last match coming against Bangladesh at Hangzhou in China during the 2023 Asian Games. The right-arm leggie picked 32 wickets across both formats, with his best of 4/13 coming against Zimbabwe in his debut series. Qadir made headlines for his star show then, bagging eight wickets in three matches.

New AI Initiative Launches for a Safer Cricket Community Ahead of Women's T20 World Cup 2024

  • The ICC (International Cricket Council) launched a new software as part of a social media moderation programme for the Women's T20 World Cup to help protect the cricket community from toxic content to safeguard the mental health of individuals and ensure a safer, kinder and healthier online community for the sport.
  • This programme is designed to identify and filter out toxic comments, including hate speech, harassment, and misogynistic content, ensuring a safer, more respectful environment for everyone involved in the tournament.
  • To carry out the social media moderation, the ICC has partnered with GoBubble, a leading provider of AI-powered technology and human resources for content moderation.
  • GoBubble's cutting-edge solution will monitor and moderate the ICC's official social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, as well as the social media accounts of participating players who have signed up for the service.
  • Harmful comments will be hidden from public view, allowing fans to engage with the World Cup without exposure to negativity.

Praveen Jayawickrama Receives 1 Year Ban for ICC Anti-Corruption Breach

  • Sri Lanka spinner Praveen Jayawickrama was banned from all forms of cricket for one year for breaching the sport's anti-corruption code, as per International Cricket Council (ICC). According to ICC charges related to the Sri Lanka Premier League and International Cricket.
  • In August 2023, the ICC charged Jayawickrama for failing to report an approach to fix matches and obstructing an investigation.
  • The governing body said the 26-year-old was approached to fix international matches and was asked to approach another player to fix matches in the 2021 season of the Lanka Premier League.
  • The ICC said Jayawickrama had admitted to being in breach of the anti-corruption code.
  • As a result of the admission, Jayawickrama has accepted a sanction of a one-year period of ineligibility, of which the last six months are suspended.

  • The four-time Grand Slam champion from Spain edged Sinner in a captivating final 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) for his fourth ATP crown of the year and 16th overall.

Vaibhav Suryawanshi Becomes Youngest ever, to Score International Century

  • The spectre of a double whammy – an Indian left-handed prodigy who is also a Brian Lara fan –haunted, who else but Australia, at Chepauk.
  • When Vaibhav Suryawanshi launched Thomas Brown over mid-wicket for a gigantic six with audacity and non-challenge in India Under-19's Youth Test against Australia, he offered first glimpses of what he is capable of. At 13 years and 188 days, Suryawanshi from Samastipur in Bihar, became the youngest ever to score an international century at any level.
  • Vaibhav made 104 off 62 in his unique authoritative style that defied his age. His century that came off 58 deliveries is the fastest ever by an Indian and second overall in U 19s behind Moeen Ali's 56 that came in 2005.

India to Host Historic First-Ever Kho Kho World Cup in 2025

  • Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) in collaboration with the International Kho Kho Federation revealed plans to organise the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup in India in 2025. This historic event marks a significant milestone in the journey of this traditional Indian sport toward global recognition.
  • The groundbreaking championship will feature: 24 countries from six continents, 16 men's teams and 16 women's teams and will be a week-long series of high-intensity matches.
  • This diverse participation underscores the growing international appeal of Kho Kho, which has evolved from its humble beginnings on mud grounds to now being played on professional mats across 54 countries worldwide.

France's Antoine Griezmann Announces Retirement from International Football

  • France's 2018 World Cup-winning star Antoine Griezmann announced his retirement from international football, bringing to an end a 10-year career with his country.
  • The Atletico Madrid forward made his France debut in March 2014 and won 137 caps, a figure beaten only by his former teammate Hugo Lloris (145) and 1998 World Cup winner Lilian Thuram (142).
  • Griezmann is also fourth in France's list of all-time goal-scorers with 44, behind only record marksman Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry and current captain Kylian Mbappe.
  • Griezmann scored in France's 4-2 win over Croatia in the final of the 2018 World Cup in Moscow, having previously helped his country reach the final of Euro 2016, a tournament he ended as top scorer with six goals.

India Set New Test Batting Records in Kanpur

  • On day four of the second Test match against Bangladesh, India smashed the record for the fastest team hundred and fastest team double hundred in Test cricket.
  • The team reached 50 runs in just three overs courtesy of explosive starts from Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
  • Despite the early loss of Rohit Sharma, India's aggressive onslaught continued as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill powered the team to the fastest team hundred in Test cricket history.
  • India achieved this goal in just 10.1 overs breaking their own world record from 2023 where they reached hundred in 12.2 overs against West Indies in Port of Spain.
  • India's aggressive batting continued as Virat Kohli scored 47 off 35 balls and KL Rahul added 68 off 43 balls, propelling the team to another record. With this performance, India shattered the record for the fastest team score of 200 in Test cricket, achieving the milestone in just 24.2 overs. The previous record was held by Australia, who reached 200 runs in 28.1 overs against Pakistan in Sydney in 2017.

Virat Kohli Becomes Fastest Batter to Reach 27,000 Runs

  • India batting maestro Virat Kohli became the fourth batter to complete 27,000 international runs during the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.
  • Kohli completed 27,000 runs across all formats, joining an exclusive club of batters which includes Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara.
  • Kohli also broke Tendulkar's record to become the quickest batter to reach 27,000 runs in only his 594th innings, 29 innings faster than Tendulkar, who got there in 623 innings in 2007. Sri Lankan Sangakkara achieved the mark in 2015 in his 648th innings, while Ponting scaled the mark in his 650th outing for Australia.
