Rafael Nadal Announces Retirement from Tennis

  • One of the greatest tennis players of all time, Spanish professional tennis player Rafael Nadal announced his retirement from the sport. In an emotional video, the 22-time Grand Slam champion bid farewell to the game in which he built his stature as one of the most loved sportspersons of all time. The Davis Cup final 8 for Spain will be Nadal's last outing as a professional tennis player, to be held in November. Nadal remains one of the most decorated sportspersons of all time. Of the 22 Grand Slam titles he has won, the Spaniard clinched record 14 French Open titles.
  • Nadal also has a total of 92 ATP singles titles to his name, including 36 Masters titles as well as an Olympic gold medal. Nadal also holds the unique record of being one of three men tennis history to complete the Career Golden Slam in singles.

Kashmir Hosts International Cricket Match after Four Decades

  • It is after four decades that Kashmir Valley witnessed an International Cricket Match in Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium. Indian and International cricketing stars played cricket in the Valley during the final leg of the Legends League Cricket 2024.
  • Srinagar is hosting over a 100 International Cricketing stars for the Legends League Cricket. Cricketers like Mohammad Kaif, Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Chris Gayle, Ross Taylor and lan Bell arrived to be live in action in Kashmir for the first time ever. Seven matches including the final will be played between October 9 and 16, 2024 at the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar.

  • Andrés Iniesta, the Spaniard, maestro of the game announced retirement from professional football after a long 22 years serving in the field. The player represented the National team of Spain and FC Barcelona, one of the best clubs in the world.

  • India's star shuttler Lakshya Sen progressed to the men's singles Round of 16 at the Arctic Open Super 500 tournament in Vantaa, Finland after his opponent Rasmus Gemke withdrew from the opening round match. Indian qualifier Kiran George shocked world No. 25 Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei 23-21 21-18 and advanced to the pre-quarter-finals.

Aashima Narrowly Misses Out on Women's trap Medal

  • India's woman trap shooter Aashima Ahlawat finished fourth, narrowly missing out on a medal by virtue of having a higher bib number, on the penultimate day of the ISSF Junior World Championship in Lima, Peru. She was by far the best Indian on show on the day, which had both the men's and women's trap finals on the roster.

Mahmudullah Announces Retirement from T20I

  • Bangladesh all-rounder Mohammad Mahmudullah announced his retirement from the T20Is. The third match in Hyderabad will be his last match in this format.
  • He made his debut in this format in 2007 against Kenya and has played 139 matches. He is just behind Rohit Sharma (157), and the Ireland duo Paul Stirling (147) and George Dockrell (141).
  • Mahmudullah had previously retired from Tests in 2021. He was Bangladesh's leading run-scorer in the 2023 Men's World Cup in India with 328 runs.

Francesco Bagnaia Holds Off Jorge Martin to Seal Japanese Grand Prix Double

  • Twice MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia won the Japanese Grand Prix in Motegi to complete a weekend double and cut his gap to rival Jorge Martin at the top of the world championship down to 10 points.
  • The Ducati rider, who qualified in second after dominating practice and won the sprint, kept Martin at bay for 20 laps and clinched an eighth win of the season for the first time in his career.

Mumbai Clinches 15th Irani Cup Title after 27-Year Wait

  • The Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai cricket team was felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in a grand ceremony after ending a 27-year wait for their Irani Cup victory. The iconic Wankhede Stadium hosted the event, marking a proud moment for Mumbai Cricket as they claimed their 15th Irani Cup title.
  • Mumbai defeated Rest of India (ROI) to win the Irani Cup 2024. The Irani Cup, also known as the IDFC First Bank Irani Trophy for sponsorship reasons, is an annual one-off First-Class cricket match organised by the BCCI and contested each season by the reigning Ranji Trophy champions and a multi-state RoI team composed of players from the other state teams.
  • The inaugural edition was played in March 1960 as a special event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Ranji Trophy.
  • BCCI named the Irani Trophy after Zal R. Irani, their long-serving president and treasurer, who was a significant figure in the organization from its inception in 1928, till his death in 1970.
