Pro Kabaddi League Wins 'Best Sports League' at CII Awards

  • The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) received the prestigious 'Best Sports League of the Year' award at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Sports Business Awards 2024. The award ceremony, part of the CII Score Card 2024 event, took place in New Delhi.
  • The CII Sports Business Awards acknowledge innovation and excellence in the sports business sector.
  • In addition, defending champion Puneri Paltan was honoured with the 'Sports Franchise of the Year' award. The franchise's grassroots initiative, Yuva Paltan, has been instrumental in developing young kabaddi stars like Aslam Inamdar and Mohit Goyat, who have become key players for the team and represented India on the international stage.

Ballon d'Or 2024 Awards

  • Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d'Or award in the male category during the ceremony at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France.
  • Rodri who was a leading figure in Manchester City's English Premier League title triumph also played a pivotal role in Spain's European Championship triumph. 
  • Aitana Bonmati won the women's Ballon d'Or after having led Barcelona Femeni to a treble winning season and having won the Women's World Cup with Spain.

Australia's Matthew Wade Retires from International Cricket

  • Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade announced his retirement from international cricket and a move into coaching.
  • Wade, who played in all three formats of the game for Australia across 13 years and 225 internationals made his last appearance during the T20 World Cup in the West Indies in June this year (2024).
  • Wade's best moment in Australia colours came during the team's victorious march to their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021 in Dubai. The southpaw's unbeaten 41 powered Australia past Pakistan in a tense semi-final game. Wade smacked Pakistan seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi for three consecutive sixes to seal the win. Wade's finishing skills were not required in the final as Australia thrashed New Zealand by eight wickets in Dubai to win the title for the first time.

VVS Laxman Team India's Head Coach for South Africa T20Is

  • Former batting veteran and NCA boss VVS Laxman was appointed Team India's head coach for the four-match T20I series against South Africa starting November 4. With regular coach Gautam Gambhir flying with the Test squad to Australia for the marquee five-match series beginning in Perth on November 22, Laxman filled in for him the way he did for ex-coach Rahul Dravid several times during his tenure.

Pan Pacific Open: Zheng Wins Third Title of 2024

  • China's Zheng Qinwen produced near-flawless serves and defeated American Sofia Kenin 7-6(5) 6-3 and captured the Pan Pacific Open title for her third trophy this season. Zheng hit 33 winners and fired off 16 aces as she took the victory in an hour and 52 minutes under a closed roof after heavy rain interrupted the first set.

Chirag Chikkara Leads India to Gold at U23 World Wrestling Championships

  • Chirag Chikkara made history by becoming only the third Indian wrestler to win the Under-23 World Championship in Tirana (Albania), contributing to India's impressive total of nine medals at the tournament. Competing in the men's freestyle 57kg category, Chikkara secured a thrilling victory with a narrow 4-3 win over Abdymalik Karachov of Kyrgyzstan in the final seconds of the match.
  • Indian wrestlers won 9 medals (1 Gold, 2 Silver  and 6 Bronze) at the Under-23 World Championships in Tirana, Albania. The medal winners are: Chirag Chikkara (Men's freestyle 57kg) - Gold,  Anjli (Women's freestyle 59kg) - Silver, Vishvajit More (Men's Greco Roman 55kg) - Bronze, Monika (Women's freestyle 68kg) - Bronze, Neha Sharma (Women's freestyle 57kg) - Bronze, Shiksha (Women's freestyle 65kg) - Bronze, Abhishek Dhaka (Men's freestyle 61kg) - Bronze, Sujeet Kalkal (Men's freestyle 70kg) - Bronze, Vicky Chahar (Men's freestyle 97kg) - Bronze.

Sharapova, Bryan Brothers Inducted into 2025 Tennis Hall of Fame Class

  • Five-time Grand Slam singles champion Maria Sharapova and the record-breaking American twins Bob and Mike Bryan were selected for the International Tennis Hall of Fame's Class of 2025. The induction ceremony is scheduled for August 23, 2025 at the Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, where the tennis icons will officially be honoured for their remarkable careers.
  • Sharapova's legacy includes being the first Russian woman to achieve the world No. 1 ranking in 2005. Her career highlights feature a career Grand Slam, placing her among just ten women to accomplish this feat, and a silver medal from the 2012 Olympics. Despite a 15-month suspension in 2016 due to a meldonium-related controversy, Sharapova's remarkable achievements, including nearly $40 million in prize money, have made her a global icon.
  • American twins Bob and Mike Bryan are celebrated as the most successful doubles team in tennis history. Their career boasts 16 Grand Slam titles, an Olympic gold medal, and a record 438 weeks as the world No. 1 team. Together, they hold an impressive 119 titles, including 39 ATP Masters 1000 championships.

Armaan Bhatia Wins First Major Pickleball Event in India

  • Armaan Bhatia won all three of his finals to emerge with three titles at the first flagship pickleball event held in New Delhi. He won the men's singles, mixed doubles, and men's doubles crowns of the PWR DUPR India Masters at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) stadium.

Afghanistan A Clinch Maiden Title

  • Afghanistan A won its maiden ACC Men's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup title by beating Sri Lanka in the final. Chasing a target of 134, Afghanistan reached home in 18.1 overs with seven wickets in hand. Sediqullah Atal's 55 not out off 55 balls helped the side comfortably chase down the target. Earlier, Bilal Sami returned figures of 3 for 22 as Afghanistan A restricted Sri Lanka A to 133 for 7 after getting an invitation to bowl first. In the semi-finals, Afghanistan A had defeated India A by 20 runs.

PCB Names Mohammad Rizwan as New White-ball Skipper

  • Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi named Mohammad Rizwan as the new Pakistan white-ball captain while Salman Ali Agha was named as his deputy. The announcement was made just hours after the squads for the upcoming Australia and Zimbabwe tour were announced.
