Amit Mishra Announces Retirement from all Forms of the Game

  • Veteran leg spinner Amit Mishra announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing the curtains down on a professional career that spanned more than two decades.
  • Mishra played his last international in 2017 but remained active in domestic cricket and the IPL, most recently turning out for Lucknow Super Giants in 2024.

Uttar Pradesh Wins Sub Junior Girls' NFC Tier 2

  • Uttar Pradesh won the Sub Junior Girls' National Football Championship 2025-26 Tier 2, defeating Kerala 2-1 in the final at the RKM Ashrama Ground, Narainpur, Chhattisgarh. Both the teams secured promotion to Tier 1 for the upcoming edition as the finalists of this season.

World Boxing Championships Kick Off in Liverpool

  • The World Boxing Championships began in Liverpool, United Kingdom, marking the first edition under the aegis of the newly formed governing body, World Boxing. For the first time, the event features both men's and women's competitions together, making it a landmark edition. India entered the tournament with a mix of seasoned champions and fresh talent, aiming to replicate its strong performances from 2023.
  • The World Boxing Championships are being held from September 4 to 14, 2025.

Assam Olympic Association Launches Bhogeswar Baruah National Sports Awards

  • The Assam Olympic Association (AOA) launched the Bhogeswar Baruah National Sports Award, honouring the legacy of Assam's first Asian Games gold medalist.
  • The inaugural awards were presented by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) and the President of AOA, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a ceremony in Guwahati.
  • Instituted in honour of Arjuna Awardee Bhogeswar Baruah, the award will be conferred annually in six categories--Best Sportsperson, Emerging Player, and Lifetime Achievement at both the national and Assam levels.

Mitchell Starc Retires from T20Is

  • Prolific Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc announced his immediate retirement from T20 international cricket, saying that he wanted to focus on his Test and ODI career.
  • Starc has played 65 matches for his country in the shortest format.
  • His 79 wickets in T20Is make him the second-highest for Australia after Adam Zampa.

New Delhi to Host BWF World Championships in August 2026

  • New Delhi will host the Badminton World Championships in August next year (2026). The announcement was made by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Championships in Paris. The competition will return to India after 17 years and to Asia after 4 years. In 2009, the World Championships were held in Hyderabad. The last time an Asian city hosted the championships was in 2018, when it was held in China's Nanjing.

  • Badminton pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei emerged as Malaysia's first mixed doubles world champions.
  • The Malaysian pair defeated the second-seeded Chinese pair of Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin in the final of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships 2025 in Paris.

Yamaguchi Akane Clinches Her Third Global Crown

  • Japan's Yamaguchi Akane clinched her third global crown with a dominant 21-9, 21-13 win over Olympic gold medallist Chen Yufei at the BWF World Championships 2025 in Paris.
  • Yamaguchi added to her badminton world titles from 2021 and 2022, becoming only the second woman behind Carolina Marin to own three global crowns.

West Delhi Lions Clinch DPL Title

  • The West Delhi Lions lifted the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2025 title by ousting Central Delhi Kings with a comfortable six-wicket victory in a high-octane final at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Vansh-Shravani and Aanya-Angela Win Doubles Gold at Yonex India Junior International Grand Prix

  • Young Indian shuttlers Vansh Dev-Shravani Walekar and Aanya Bisht-Angel Punera secured two titles in doubles events at the Late Sushant Chipalkatti Yonex Sunrise India Junior International Grand Prix, held at the P. E. Society's Modern PDMBA Sports Complex in Pune, Maharashtra.
  • In an all-Indian mixed doubles final, the unseeded duo Vansh Dev & Shravani Walekar produced a commanding display defeating second seeds C. Lalramsanga and Taarini Suri in straight games 21-12, 21-13.
  • In U-19 women's doubles, another unseeded Indian pair, Aanya Bisht & Angel Punera, fought back in style and overcame Japan's fifth seeds Aoi Banno & Yuzu Ueno. After conceding the opening game 21-23, the Indian duo bounced back with a dominant 21-12 win before holding their nerve in a tense decider to secure the gold 21-17 in a thrilling 70-minute battle.
  • A total prize money of $ 15,000 (Rs. 13,50,000) was awarded at the event.

Satwik-Chirag Secure Worlds Medal with Redemption Win

  •  Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty clinched bronze at the 2025 BWF World Championships in Paris (the 29th edition), becoming the first Indian doubles pair to win two World Championships medals. Their run ended in the semi-finals against China's Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi, with the Indians losing 19-21, 21-18, 12-21.
  • The gold medal was won by South Korea's Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae.

Odisha's Panda Sisters to Represent India at Paris World Badminton Championship

  • Odisha's pride in badminton scaled new heights as Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda, India's first sibling pair in the sport, represented India at the Paris World Badminton Championship from August 25 to 31. The 29th edition of the tournament washeld at Adidas Arena in Paris, France.
  • Last year, the Indian pair suffered a defeat in the women's doubles of the Indonesia Open 2024.

Assam Olympic Association Unveils Bhogeswar Baruah National Sports Award Trophy

  • The Assam Olympic Association (AOA) unveiled the Bhogeswar Baruah National Sports Award trophy in Guwahati.
  • The ceremony was attended by Assam Sports Minister Nandita Gorlosa and star boxer Ankushita Bodo, along with Lakhya Konwar, General Secretary of Assam Olympic Association, among others.
  • The new award, instituted in honour of Arjun awardee Bhogeswar Baruah, the first Assamese athlete to win a gold medal at the Asian Games (1966, Bangkok), will be presented annually to celebrate sporting excellence and inspire the next generation of athletes.
  • The Bhogeswar Baruah National Sports Award will recognise athletes across six categories, with three marquee honours - Best Sportsperson of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports, and Emerging Sportsperson of the Year.

Rajeev Shukla Replaces Roger Binny as BCCI head

  • Former India pacer and BCCI president Roger Binny reportedly stepped down as head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), India's richest sports association.
  • Rajeev Shukla, who has been serving as the Vice-President, was appointed as the acting chief until the next elections, which are expected to be held sometime next month.

Centre Clears India's 2030 CWG Bid

  • The Union Cabinet approved the submission of India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG), marking a significant step in the country's growing ambition to stage major international sporting events. Alongside the bid, the Cabinet also sanctioned the signing of a Host Collaboration Agreement and assured grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government if the bid is accepted.
  • Ahmedabad has been earmarked as the host city, with officials highlighting its world-class infrastructure, training facilities, and sporting culture. The Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest in the world, has already showcased its capacity to host global events, most notably the the ICC men's World Cup in 2023.

Diamond League Final 2025 Javelin

  • Neeraj Chopra ended second in the Diamond League final with a best throw of 85.01m. Chopra threw three "no-mark" attempts on the trot in the middle and it was only his final throw of 85.01m that helped him secure second spot ahead of Keshorn Walcott. The winner was Germany's Julian Weber, who threw the javelin over 91 metres.

National Squash Championship: Velavan Senthilkumar & Anahat Singh Clinch Titles

  • Top seed Anahat Singh completed a hat-trick of titles by winning the women's singles event at the National Squash Championship 2025 in New Delhi.
  • The 81st edition of India's senior National Squash Championship was held from August 23 to 28.
  • Anahat Singh, India's highest-ranked women's squash player in the world, defeated second seed Akansha Salunkhe 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-4) in the final at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium.
  • In the men's draw, Velavan Senthilkumar reclaimed the title with a hard-fought 3-1 (11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 11) 8 victory over last year's champion Abhay Singh. Senthilkumar had lost to Abhay Singh in the previous final in Mumbai last year.
  • The 2025 edition, hosted in the capital for the first time in seven years, was contested only in singles.
