Haryana Reigns Supreme at 23rd National Paralympic Athletics Championship

  • Haryana emerged as the overall champion of the 23rd National Paralympic Athletics Championship, securing an impressive tally of 49 gold, 32 silver, and 25 bronze medals.
  • Tamil Nadu, the host state, finished second with 17 gold, 18 silver, and 12 bronze, while Uttar Pradesh claimed the third position with 14 gold, 17 silver, and 11 bronze medals.
  • Rajasthan finished fourth with 13 gold, 22 silver and 26 bronze while Maharashtra finished fifth with 11 gold 3 silver and 13 bronze. The championship, held in Tamil Nadu from February 18 to 20, 2025, witnessed exceptional performances by para-athletes from across the country.
  • The championship, organised by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and the Tamil Nadu Paralympic Sports Association, witnessed participation from 1,476 para-athletes representing 30 states and union territories, competing across 155 events.

Ranchi to host 4th South Asian Senior Athletics Championships in May

  • The 4th South Asian Senior Athletics Championship will be held from May 3 to 5, 2025, at the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand, with countries like India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives participating; this event will serve as a qualifier for regional and international competitions.
  • Ranchi was originally scheduled to host the championships from October 4 to 6, 2024 but the event was postponed. This event marks the return of the championships to India after 17 years, with the last edition held in 2008. The first two editions of the South Asian Senior Athletics Championships were held in 1997 and 1998.

Jaspal Rana, Deepali Deshpande Return to National Coaching Setup

  • Dronacharya Awardee coach Deepali Deshpande and Manu Bhaker's coach Jaspal Rana returned to the national shooting coaching setup, announced NRAI.
  • In the governing body meeting of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), the body decided to appoint Deepali Deshpande as the head coach of rifle and Jaspal Rana as the high-performance coach of 25m pistol.
  • In all, a total of 16 new members were appointed to the coaching team, with 19 being retained, including one coordinator (Amar Jung Singh) and two coaches (Priti Sharma and Anuja Jung) for Deaf Shooters.

  • Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo made history in Barcelona by shattering the world half-marathon record. Kiplimo, who reclaimed the title he held in 2021, set a new record by finishing the 21.0975 km race in an astounding 56 minutes and 42 seconds. This performance was a remarkable 48 seconds faster than the previous world record, set by Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha in November 2024. Kiplimo's extraordinary achievement is being hailed as the greatest single improvement in the men's world half marathon record in history.

Manu Bhaker Named BBC Sportswoman of the Year

  • Indian shooter Manu Bhaker was honoured as the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year, following a remarkable campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024, where she secured two historic bronze medals. Her performances cemented her status as one of India's finest sporting talents, making her the first Indian female shooter to win multiple medals at a single Olympic Games.
  • Manu Bhaker edged out a strong field of nominees to claim the prestigious award. The other contenders for the honour included golfer Aditi Ashok, para-shooter Avani Lekhara, India women's cricket vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and wrestler Vinesh Phogat—all of whom have been exceptional ambassadors of Indian sports on the global stage.
