Former England Captain Alastair Cook Retires from All Forms of Cricket

  • Former England captain Alastair Cook has announced retirement from all forms of cricket, drawing the curtains on a glorious professional career spanning two decades.
  • Cook retired from Test cricket in 2018 but continued to play on for five more years for his county side, Essex.
  • Cook's contract with Essex expired at the end of the 2023 season and he decided against extending it.
  • Cook established himself as an all-time great during a record-breaking England career during which he played 161 Tests, 59 of those as captain, and scored an England record 12,472 Test runs. With 33 tons, Cook also owns the most Test centuries by an England batter.
  • He won two home men's Ashes series as captain in 2013 and 2015 and was player of the series in the historic 2010-11 triumph in Australia, when he scored 766 runs at an average of 127.66.
  • Cook also captained England in ODIs, making 92 appearances and scoring five centuries. He was awarded a knighthood in 2019.

Cricket Approved for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Announces IOC President

  • Cricket is set to feature in the 2028 Olympics as the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Executive Board approved the proposal of Los Angeles Games organisers to include the sport in the programme. IOC president Thomas Bach said that officials had accepted a proposal by LA organisers for cricket to be included as one of five new sports together with baseball/softball, flag football (non-contact American football), squash and lacrosse.
  • Los Angeles chiefs have proposed a six-team event, in both men's and women's T20 cricket, with the United States set to field sides as the host nation.

Indian PM Narendra Modi Confirms 2036 Olympics Bid

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India's bid for the 2036 Olympics, saying the country will leave no stone unturned to successfully host the quadrennial event.
  • PM Modi made the remarks at the 141st International Olympic Committee session, held in the western Indian city of Mumbai.

Raunak Sadhwani Wins FIDE World Junior Rapid Chess Championship

  • Raunak Sadhwani won the FIDE World Junior Rapid Chess Championship in Sardinia, Italy. Raunak scored 8.5 over 11 rounds to win the Championship ahead of Arseniy Nesterov of Russia, who scored 8.
  • In the open section, Raunak, a rising star from Nagpur, India, displayed his prowess and unyielding determination to register a remarkable victory.
  • Raunak became a grandmaster at the age of 13. He is the ninth youngest player in history and the fourth youngest Indian to be awarded the title.

ICC Names Shubman Gill Player of the Month

  • Shubman Gill was named ICC Men's Player of the Month for September by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Chamari Athapaththu of Sri Lanka was crowned ICC Women's Player of the Month for September.
  • Gil was awarded for his run-scoring feats in India's trophy-winning Asia Cup campaign and the subsequent ODI series against Australia. Sri Lankan icon Chamari Athapaththu claims the ICC Women's Player of the Month crown after her T20I batting and bowling exploits last month delivered her side's maiden series win on English soil.

'Juhi,' the mascot, takes inspiration from the beloved elephant at Betla National Park. PM Modi Inaugurates 141st IOC Session at Jio World Centre in Mumbai

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. The session served as a key meeting of the members of the International Olympic Committee.
  • Important decisions regarding the future of Olympic games are made at IOC sessions. India is hosting the IOC session for the second time and after a gap of about 40 years. The IOC's 86th session was held in New Delhi in 1983.
  • The 141st IOC Session, held in India, embodied the nation's dedication to fostering global cooperation, celebrating sporting excellence, and furthering the Olympic ideals of friendship, respect, and excellence.

ATP Tel Aviv Open Tennis Tournament Cancelled

  • The ATP Tel Aviv Open tennis tournament, scheduled to start on November 5 in the Israeli coastal city, was cancelled due to the security situation in the country, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the organising bodies in Israel said. The ATP 250 event returned to Tel Aviv in 2022 for the first time since 1996. Last year, world number one Novak Djokovic won the title after defeating Croatia's Marin Cilic in the final.
  • The ATP has not yet officially announced if the tournament will be moved to another country, but several global sports websites reported that it would be played in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.

Manikanta Creates New 100m National Record at National Open Athletics Championships

  • H. H. Manikanta of Services created a new men's 100m national record on the opening day of National Open Athletics Championships.
  • Manikanta clocked 10.23 seconds to win heat number 3 and qualify for the final.
  • He erased the earlier national record of 10.26 seconds which was in the name of Amiya Kumar Mallick of Odisha set in 2016.

World, Olympic and Asian Games Champion Neeraj Chopra Appointed as Laureus Ambassador

  • Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic, World and Asian champion in men's javelin throw, was named a Laureus Ambassador, pledging his support to Laureus Sport for Good, the global foundation supporting over 300 programmes that use sport to eradicate inequality and discrimination for young people around the world.
  • His association with Laureus goes back to 2022, when he was nominated in the Breakthrough of the Year category at the Laureus World Sports Awards, following his gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics – the first won by an Indian track and field athlete.

The 11th Sultan of Johor Cup to Be Held in Johor, Malaysia

  • The 11th edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup in 2023 is scheduled to be held in Johor, Malaysia. Hockey India announced the 20-member Indian junior men's hockey team that will participate in the 11th Sultan of Johor Cup. This prestigious tournament is set to take place from October 27 to November 4. Notably, this year's edition will feature eight teams, expanding from the customary six.
  • In this year's Sultan of Johor Cup, India has been placed in Pool B. They will face tough competition from Malaysia, Pakistan, and New Zealand. National Games 2023 to Be Held In Goa From Oct. 26 To Nov. 9

  • The National Games are India's homespun Olympic-style multi-sport event where athletes from the various states and Union Territories compete for medals.
  • The state's sports minister Govind Gaude confirmed that the 37th edition of the National Games 2023 will be held in Goa from October 26 to November 9.
  • This will be the first time Goa will host the National Games. Goa was awarded the hosting rights for the 36th edition, initially scheduled for 2016.

Ayodhya to host National Archery Championship in November 2023

  • The Senior National Archery Championship will be held in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh from 25 to 30 November 2023.
  • The championship will feature individual, team, and mixed team events under Indian, recurve, and compound rounds.
  • The competition will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on November 25.
  • Union sports minister Anurag Thakur will participate in the closing ceremony.
