T20 World Cup to Stream and Broadcast with Sign Language, Audio Description

  • In a first for Indian sports streaming, the ICC Men's T20 cricket World Cup will be streamed with Hindi audio description and Indian Sign Language (ISL) for visually and hearing impaired viewers, Disney+ Hotstar, the streaming service with the rights to stream the tournament this year (2024) announced.

Football Legend Sunil Chhetri Announces Retirement

  • Sunil Chhetri, the legendary player from Indian football who began playing for his country in 2005, announced his retirement from international football.
  • He will play his final game for India on June 6, at Kolkata, during the FIFA World Cup qualifier for 2026, against Kuwait. Chhetri who has the most appearances and goals for the Indian national team, is regarded as one of the best football players in the country.
  • Chhetri is third among active players globally in terms of goals scored for his country, only behind Messi and the Cristiano Ronaldo.
  • Chhetri is the first Indian player to rank among the top 10 goal scorers in history.

Boxer Abhishek Yadav Storms into Semi-finals of Elorda Cup

  • India's Abhishek Yadav produced a dominating performance and entered the semi-finals of the Elorda Cup 2024, in Astana, Kazakhstan, beating Kazakhstan's Rakhat Seitzhan. Meanwhile, Pawan Bartwal (54kg), Kavinder Singh Bisht (57kg), Varinder Singh (60kg) and Hitesh (71kg) suffered losses in their respective quarter-finals.

Federation Cup 2024: Neeraj Chopra Wins Javelin Gold with 82.27 m Throw

  • India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in Federation Cup 2024, held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, with a throw of 82.27 m. This was Chopra's first event in India since winning the historic gold medal at 2022 Tokyo Olympics. He last participated in the Federation Cup in 2021 and had won the gold with 87.80-m throw.

Satwik-Chirag Look to Regain Competitive Edge as Thailand Open Begins

  • Star shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will look to regain their competitive edge as they spearhead the Indian challenge at the Thailand Open Super 500 tournament, in Bangkok. The top seeded Indian pair, who is one of the favourites to win a gold at the Paris Olympics, found it a tad difficult to negotiate the variety of serves dished out by the Indonesians and Chinese at the Thomas Cup. Both shuttlers will look to address the slight drop in their level this week when they begin their campaign against Malaysia's Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub Azriyn and Tan Wee Kiong. Tamil Nadu's Shyaamnikhil Becomes India's 85th Chess Grandmaster

  • P. Shyaamnikhil from Tamil Nadu etched his name in the annals of Indian chess history by becoming the country's 85th Grandmaster (GM). Shyaamnikhil chess prodigy, who embarked on his journey at the tender age of eight, finally secured the coveted third and final GM norm at the prestigious 2024 Dubai Police Masters Chess Tournament.
  • Born in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, in 1992, Shyaamnikhil's chess journey began when he relocated to Chennai to pursue his passion. His talent was evident from an early age, as he earned the International Master (IM) title in 2011 and secured his first GM norm at the Mumbai Mayor's Cup the same year. The second GM norm followed at the Indian Championship, setting the stage for his ultimate achievement.

Adarsh, Manu Top Qualifications in Fourth 25m Olympic Selection Trial

  • Manu Bhaker and Adarsh Singh emerged winners in the qualification rounds of the women's 25m pistol and men's 25m rapid-fire pistol respectively in the Olympic Selection Trial. All five shooters in both men's and women's categories will now clash in the final at the M.P. State Shooting Academy ranges. Anish Bhanwala took a healthy four-point lead from the first precision stage into the second rapid-fire stage, only to be pipped by Adarsh on countback, after both posted scores of 583 with the same number of 24-hits in the inner 10-ring. Ankur Goel too shot the same score but had 10 fewer hits in the inner ring, while Vijayveer Sidhu clinched fourth with 581, scoring just one inner-10 more than Bhavesh Shekhawat.

Paddler Manika Batra Reaches Career-high Ranking of World No. 24

  • Ace women's table tennis star Manika Batra rose to a career-best singles ranking of 24 following her success in the Saudi Smash, becoming the first Indian woman player to break into the top-25 in world rankings.
  • Manika Khel Ratna awardee, who was in the 39th spot before the tournament, jumped 15 spots following her run in Jeddah, where she reached the quarter-finals.
  • It was also the first time an Indian woman player advanced that deep in the tournament.

Japan Wins 2024 Azlan Shah Hockey Cup

  • In a dramatic conclusion to the 2024 Azlan Shah Hockey Cup, Japan defeated Pakistan in a penalty shootout after a tense 2-2 draw, dashing Pakistan's hopes that had reached the tournament final for the first time since 2011 following a series of stellar performances.
  • Six teams participated in the event, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Canada. Pakistan won the Azlan Shah Cup title three times in the past and was the second runners-up in the last edition which was also held in Malaysia two years ago.
  • The Sultan Azlan Shah Trophy is organised by the Malaysia Hockey Confederation and invites six countries to participate. Initiated as a biennial tournament in 1983, its popularity led to it becoming an annual event in 1999.

Abha Khatua Sets National Record in Women's Shot Put

  • Abha bettered the national mark with an eye-catching throw of 18.41 metres at the National Federation Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar. She had jointly held the previous record with Manpreet Kaur at 18.06m, which she achieved at the Asian Championships in Bangkok in July 2023 while winning silver.
  • Abha could have made the qualifying mark of 18.81m for the Paris Olympics. Her third attempt was pegged at 18.85m but was registered as a foul throw.

  • In a display of sheer dominance, World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen pulled off an incredible comeback to claim victory at the 2024 Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland. Despite starting the day trailing by 2.5 points behind GM Wei Yi, Carlsen embarked on a remarkable 10-game winning streak, ultimately overtaking his rival and securing the championship title.

Aman Only Male Indian Wrestler to Win Quota for Paris Games; Jaideep, Sujeet Bow Out of Qualifiers

  • Sujeet Kalkal and Jaideep Ahlawat resisted their respective rivals well at the World Qualifiers but could not add more quotas to India's kitty for the Paris Olympic Games, where the country will have only one male wrestler presenting his challenge.
  • In his crucial 65kg bronze medal contest, Sujeet matched USA's Zain Allen Retherford in terms of skills but conceded a takedown on counter attack to lose 2-2 on criteria.
  • India will have six wrestlers in its contingent in Paris with five quotas coming through women.
  • Aman Sehrawat is the only male wrestler to have won a Paris quota.
  • Vinesh Phogat (50kg), Antim Panghal (53kg), Anshu Malik (57kg), Nisha Dahiya (68kg) and Reetika Hooda (76kg) qualified for Paris Games at different qualifying events.

Punjab's Veerpal Wins Gold, Vithya Pulls Out

  • Defending champion and national record holder Vithya Ramraj pulled out of the women's 400m hurdles event due to back pain as the Federation Cup made a low-key start. Vithya, part of the Indian women's 4x400m relay squad that booked a Paris Olympics berth in Bahamas, pulled out immediately after the start of the final race on the opening day.
  • Veerpal Kaur of Punjab won the gold medal with a very slow time of 59.43 seconds. Salini Valupararambil of Kerala was second with a time of 1:00.73, while Ramandeep Kaur of Punjab took the third spot in 1:01.29.

Sai Breaks Sachin's Record, Becomes Fastest Batter to Score 1000 IPL Runs

  • Gujarat Titans batter Sai Sudharsan became fastest Indian batter to score 1000 runs in Indian Premier League. He leapfrogged Sachin Tendulkar, who took 31 innings to complete 1000 runs in IPL. Sudharsan took just 25 innings to reach the 1000 IPL runs.
  • Sudharsan achieved the landmark during GT's match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 in Ahmedabad.
