To Decide Fate of World Chess Championship Host, Pollution a Factor: FIDE CEO Sutovsky on Delhi's...

  • The air pollution that New Delhi experiences annually in the final months of the year could be one of the factors in deciding whether India's capital hosts the upcoming World Chess Championship this year (2024), FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky said. India's 18-year-old challenger Gukesh will take on reigning world champion Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship for a chance to become the youngest world champion ever in history.
  • Besides New Delhi, Chennai and Singapore are also in a three-city race to host the most prestigious event in chess. The world championship is scheduled to be held in November and December 2024 with the exact dates yet to be revealed.

Munich World Cup: Sift Wins Bronze in Tight Finish at WC

  • Indian shooter Sift Kaur Samra claimed the bronze medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event after narrowly missing the silver at the ISSF World Cup (rifle/pistol).
  • Sift shot a 452.9 and missed silver by an agonising 0.1 to China's Han Jiayu.
  • The world No. 1 Seonaid McIntosh of the Great Britain won gold with a score of 466.7.

Another Race Walker Loses Olympics Mark

  • Another race walker who had registered the Paris Olympics qualifying standard in the 20km event has lost his qualifying mark. Suraj Panwar is the latest among three walkers who have now lost the qualified status. And what has raised eyebrows is the fact that all three, Suraj, Servin Sebastian and Arshpreet Singh, breached the qualifying mark at the Indian Open Race Walking Competition that was held in Chandigarh in January this year (2024).

World Cup: Sarabjot Shoots Gold Medal in Munich

  • Sarabjot Singh opened India's account at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany with a gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol event, emerging triumphant in a field that featured a reigning world champion and a four-time Olympian.
  • He shot a 242.7 in the eight-man final, leaving behind his nearest competitor Bu Shuaihang of China by 0.2 points as Germany's Robin Walter won bronze.

T20 WC: Rohit Sharma Becomes Indian Captain with most T20I Wins

  • During the IND vs IRE match which was played at the Nassau Cricket Stadium in New York, Sharma scored 52 off 37 balls powered with 4 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 140.54. However, he had to leave the crease and retire hurt knock after he suffered an injury after the end of the 10th over.
  • During the match, Rohit Sharma made the record of becoming the second player to score 4000 runs across all three formats after Virat Kohli.
  • In T20Is, he has scored 4026 runs in 152 matches at an average of 32.20 and a strike rate of 139.98. In Tests, he has scored 4137 runs, 10,709 runs in ODIs and 11625 in T20s.
  • During the India vs Ireland match, Rohit Sharma also achieved a significant milestone and became India's most accomplished T20I captain surpassing M. S. Dhoni's record.

Kedar Jadhav Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket

  • India batter Kedar Jadhav announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
  • Jadhav made his international debut for India in November 2014 during an ODI against Sri Lanka at Ranchi, went on to play 73 one-dayers as well as nine T20Is. Jadhav scored 1,389 runs at an average of 42.09 with two centuries and six fifties in ODIs and had another 122 runs from six T20I outings. He was also a handy option for India with the ball and notched 27 wickets in the 50-overs format, bowling right-arm off spin.
  • Jadhav was part of the India squad that made it to the 2017 Champions Trophy final and the 2019 World Cup semi-final.
  • He also featured in 93 IPL games for five franchises – Kochi Tuskers, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai, and Sunrisers Hyderabad and had 1196 runs to his name from the same. In 2018, he was part of the CSK squad that lifted the IPL title.

U.S. Championships: Simone Biles Wins Record-extending Ninth Title

  • Simone Biles won a record-extending ninth all-around national title at the US Gymnastics Championships, impressing ahead of the Olympics in Paris.
  • Biles finished with a combined score of 119.750, while Skye Blakely finished 5.900 points back in second and Kayla DiCello came in third. Suni Lee finished in fourth place and Jordan Chiles in fifth.
  • Biles dominated the event, turning in the top cumulative scores in the four events – balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars and vault – despite a second day spill in the latter.

Tanvi Sharma Bags Women's Singles Title of Bonn International Badminton Tournament

  • India's Tanvi Sharma bagged the women's singles title of the Bonn International Badminton Tournament, in Germany. The young Indian shuttler defeated Wang Pei Yu of Taiwan in straight sets, 21-19, 22-20. This is the first senior title for the 15-year-old Tanvi.

Sprinter Dutee Chand Suspended Till 2027

  • Indian sprinter Dutee Chand's hopes of getting her suspension overruled was dashed by the National Anti-Doping Agency's (NADA) appeal panel after her suspension order was uploaded on its website.
  • Dutee, who is the country's fastest 100m women sprinter, was banned after traces of selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) were found in her urine sample. She had appealed against the ban but the panel had upheld the earlier order.
  • As per the order by the anti-doping disciplinary panel, her four-year suspension will run from January 3, 2023 to January 2, 2027. SARMs, which are touted as supplements, help in increasing muscle mass.
