First Ancient Syphilis Genomes Decoded

An international research team has recovered the first historic genomes from the bacterium Treponema pallidum, which causes syphilis. It was previously not thought possible to recover DNA of this bacterium from ancient samples. In the study, the researchers were able to distinguish genetically between the subspecies of the disease that cause syphilis and that cause yaws, which are not readily distinguishable in skeletal remains.

Myntra Unveils Its First Wearable Device

Fashion e-tailer Myntra launched its "Blink Go" first smart wearable device at Rs. 4,199.

The device allows users to monitor their fitness parameters and set personal fitness goals that include activity tracking -- such as steps, distance, calories, sleep and heart rate sensor.

WhatsApp to Stop Working on Selected Phones

Instant messaging app WhatsApp has updated its support feature, updating the list of smartphones that will stop working soon.

In the run up to offering better service to consumers, the Facebook-owned chat messenger will reportedly stop working on a host of devices.

Indian Scientists Discover Distant Planet

A team from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, has spotted for the first time a distant planet six times bigger than Earth and revolving around a sun-like star about 600 light years away. Both the planet and the star have been named EPIC.

With this discovery India has joined a handful of countries which have discovered planets around stars.

EPIC 211945201b (or K2-236b) is the name given to the planet by the discovery team. The host star is named EPIC 211945201 or K2-236.

NASA Finds Curious New Pointers

NASA`s Curiosity rover has discovered tough organic molecules in three-billion-year-old sedimentary rocks near the surface of Mars -- a finding that suggests the planet could have supported ancient life.

It has also found seasonal variations in the levels of methane in the atmosphere, a discovery that has relation to the search for current life on the Red Planet.

China has successfully launched a new meteorological satellite to improve the accuracy of weather forecasting and provide better meteorological services free of cost to countries participating in its ambitious, multi-billion dollar Belt and Road Initiative.
