Say Goodbye to This Ocean-Monitoring Satellite

The Jason-2/Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM), the third in a U.S.-European series of satellite missions designed to measure sea surface height, successfully ended its science mission on Oct. 1, 2019.
NASA and its mission partners made the decision to end the mission after detecting deterioration in the spacecraft's power system.
Jason-2/OSTM, a joint NASA mission with the French space agency Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) was launched in June 2008.
The mission extended the long-term record of sea surface height measurements started by the NASA-CNES TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1 missions. Jason-2/OSTM's 11-year lifetime well exceeded its three-year design life.
These measurements are being continued by its successor, Jason-3, launched in 2016.
Jason-2/OSTM provided unique insight into ocean currents and sea-level rise with tangible benefits to marine forecasting, meteorology and our understanding of climate change.

US Successfully Tests Intercontinental Ballistic Missile

The US military had tested an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with re-entry vehicle from a base in California across the Pacific Ocean.
Launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, the re-entry vehicle travelled about 6,750km across the Pacific Ocean to the Kwajalein.
The United States has spent decades and billions of dollars developing technologies to stop an incoming ballistic missile, and is aiming to step up efforts in the face of growing threats.
North Korea became the latest entrant to the ICBM club in 2017 when it tested the Hwasong-15, which analysts say is capable of reaching the whole US mainland.

Samsung Unveils Galaxy Fold In India At ₹1.65 lakh

South Korean electronics giant Samsung unveiled its luxury smartphone Galaxy Fold — that comes with a foldable display — in India at a price tag of ₹1,64,999.
Pre-bookings for the phone will open on October 4, 2019 while deliveries will begin on October 20, 2019.
Galaxy Fold is the latest luxury smartphone which is going to change how people interact, communicate and experience life. It is also samsung's first foldable smartphone.
There are many many firsts in this- the fact that it folds, the kind of hinge that it has, dual battery and six camera system.

Oldest Galaxy Protocluster Forms 'Queen's Court'

Using the Subaru, Keck and Gemini Telescopes, an international team of astronomers discovered a collection of 12 galaxies that existed about 13.0 billion years ago.
This is the earliest protocluster ever found. One of the 12 galaxies is a giant object, known as Himiko, which was discovered a decade ago by the Subaru Telescope and named for a mythological queen in ancient Japan.
This discovery suggests that large structures such as protoclusters already existed when the universe was only about 800 million years old, 6 per cent of its present age.

Ajit Mohan, vice president and managing director, India Facebook, maade the announcement while addressing the opening session of the second edition of 'Huddle Kerala 2019,' one of Asia's largest congregations on start-up ecosystem in Thiruvananthapuram.

NASA Visualization Shows a Black Hole's Warped World

NASA's new visualization shows a black hole's warped world and it looks like something you would see in a trippy carnival mirror.
The moving images replicate a black hole's appearance where infalling matter has collected into a flimsy, scorching structure called an accretion disk. Extreme gravity from the black hole skews light emitted by different regions of the disk, resulting in the bizarre warped view.
Bright knots constantly form and dissipate in the disk as magnetic fields wind and twist through the churning gas.
Nearest the black hole, the gas orbits at close to the speed of light, while the outer portions spin a bit more slowly.
This difference stretches and shears the bright knots, producing light and dark lanes in the disk.

Technology Awards Presented To Four Labs

President of India Ram Nath Kovind and Minister for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh Vardhan presented the Technology Awards and other prizes for excellence in science and technology, instituted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
The winners of the CSIR Technology Awards are - Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow; Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar; Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad; and National Aerospace Laboratories, Bengaluru.
The awards were instituted in 1990 to foster and encourage multi-disciplinary in-house team efforts and external interaction for technology development, transfer and commercialization.

MoU To Set Up Kalam Centre For Science And Technology At CUJ Signed

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed among Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence and Central University of Jammu (CUJ) for the establishment of Kalam Centre for Science and Technology (KCST) at the university.
The MoU signing ceremony was held in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The main objective of the MoU is to undertake and facilitate multidisciplinary directed basic and applied research and technology development in the identified research verticals, namely, computational system security and sensors.
