Koustav Chatterjee Becomes India's 78th Grandmaster

  • Koustav Chatterjee became India's 78th Grandmaster in MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship in New Delhi.
  • The 19-year-old drew his game against GM Mitrabha Guha. Koustav cruised through the game. Mitrabha could have gone for a win, however, Koustav mixed up the order in the endgame and he managed to draw it to secure his final GM norm.
  • Koustav hailing from Kolkata became West Bengal's tenth Grandmaster.

Vaidehi Chaudhari Wins ITF Women's Tournament Singles in Gwalior

  • Second seed Vaidehi Chaudhari beat the top seed Ksenia Laskutova 7-5, 6-4 and clinched the title in the $15,000 ITF women's tennis tournament at the City Centre Tennis Complex in Gwalior.
  • It was Vaidehi's maiden singles title in the professional circuit. She had won her maiden doubles title with Laskutova as her partner.

Koneru Humpy Wins Silver at World Blitz Chess Championship

  • Former world rapid champion Koneru Humpy won India's first-ever silver medal in the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
  • Humpy defeated China's Zhongyi Tan to win Silver in the 17th and final round. Fourth seeded Humpy scored an impressive 12.5 points, just half a point behind the gold medal winner Bibisara Balabayeva of Kazakhastan.

Hockey Haryana Women's U-18 Team Wins Khelo India Youth Games 2022

  • Hockey Haryana's women's team won the Khelo India Youth Games 2022 Women's Under 18 Qualifiers after defeating Madhya Pradesh 2-0 in the final at Bhubaneswar.
  • In the final match, Pooja and Gurmail Kaur scored a goal each for Haryana to end the contest in their favour.
  • Odisha stepped up to claim third place after beating Hockey Jharkhand 2-1 in the 3rd and 4th place encounter.
  • Sanjna Horo scored for Jharkhand but Odisha came back with goals from Puja Sahoo and Sunelita Toppo to complete a thrilling comeback.
  • In the men's Hockey, Madhya Pradesh defeated Odisha 6-5 to clinch Khelo India Youth Games 2022 Men's Under-18 Qualifiers title in Bhubaneswar.
  • Haryana claimed third place in the competition with a win against Jharkhand 2-0 in the 3rd and 4th place clash.
  • Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Jharkhand qualified for the Khelo India Youth Games to be held in Madhya Pradesh in 2023.

Centre Recognises E-Sports as Part of 'Multi-Sport' Event

  • The Government of India gave E-sports a major boost by integrating it with mainline sports disciplines in the country.
  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in exercise of the powers "conferred by clause (3) of article 77 of the Constitution" amended the rules governing E-sports and asked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Sports Ministry to include "E-sports as part of multi-sports events".
  • There had been a growing demand for E-sports to be included in the curriculum of multi-discipline events after it was included in the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games as a demonstration sport, meaning medals won in the sport were not counted in the official overall medals tally.

L. Dhanush Bags Gold in Youth Men's 49 kg Section of National Weightlifting Championships

  • Son of a carpenter in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu's 16-year-old L. Dhanush bagged a gold medal in the youth men's 49 kg section of the National (junior, youth & senior) weightlifting championships at the Ponjesly College of Engineering, Tamil Nadu.
  • Dhanush did an average 81 kg in snatch and went on to create a National record in clean & jerk (110 kg) with a total of 191Kg, pushing his state-mate V. Kishore (188) to the second position. Dhanush rewrote the record set by Bhaktaram Desti (108 kg).

Uttarakhand Govt. to Set up World-class Kayaking-Canoeing Academy in Tehri

  • Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy RK Singh said that a world-class Kayaking-Canoeing Academy is to be set up at Tehri in Uttarakhand. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Championship "Tehri Water Sports Cup" at Tehri Lake, he exclaimed that the promotion of sports is the priority of the Union Government.
  • This is the first time that the national-level sports competition is being organized at Tehri Lake. He said that the making of Tehri Lake an international tourism destination is being done at a fast pace.

Arunkumar Jagadeesh Appointed as Mumbai Indians' Assistant Batting Coach

  • Indian Premier League's most successful franchise Mumbai Indians roped in Arunkumar Jagadeesh as their assistant batting coach.
  • A right-handed opening batter and a veteran of over 100 First Class games, Arunkumar Jagadeesh represented Karnataka in the Indian domestic circuit for 16 long years from 1993 to 2008.
  • After retirement, he turned to be a mentor and was the batting coach of the Karnataka side when they won their back-to-back titles in the Ranji Trophy, the Irani Cup and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
