Bengaluru Mavericks Crowned Tennis Premier League Season 5 Champions

  • The final day of the Tennis Premier League (TNPL) season 5 saw teams give it their all on the court as they vied for the coveted trophy. After a few heated contests, it was eventually Bengaluru SG Mavericks, who were crowned champions of Season 5 of the TNPL. The day's first semi-final saw Bengaluru SG Mavericks go head-to-head with Delhi Binny's Brigade. Arina Rodionova of Bengaluru SG Mavericks beat Sahaja Yamalapalli of Delhi Binny's Brigade in a game that ended 11-9.

Khelo India Games to be Held in Tamil Nadu in January 2024

  • Khelo India Games will be held in Tamil Nadu in January next year (2024). The State Government said that the games will be held in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy from January 19 to 31, 2024.
  • More than 5,500 sports persons and over 1,600 coaches are expected to participate in the event. More than 1000 referees and 1200 volunteers will be part of the sporting event in which 27 types of sport will be played. For the first time, squash has been included in Khelo India Games.

Aryna Sabalenka, Novak Djokovic Named as 2023 ITF World Champions

  • Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka were honoured by the International Tennis Federation as the 2023 ITF World Champions. The pair was the only singles players who managed to reach at least the semi-finals of all four Grand Slam events this year (2023).
  • This is Djokovic's eighth ITF World Champion award, which is also a record. He finished the year (2023) as ATP No. 1 for a record-extending eighth time, where he bagged the Australian Open, French Open and US Open, which also took his majors' total to a men's leading 24. He was also runners-up at the Wimbledon and led the men's tour with seven titles.
  • This is the first time Sabalenka received this honour. She won the Australian Open this year (2023), which was also her first Grand Slam title. She was runners-up at the US Open, and also made it to the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon. She also made her debut at No. 1 in the WTA rankings in September 2023 and finished the year at No. 2, behind Iga Swiatek.

BCCI Decides to Retire M. S. Dhoni's Iconic No.7 Jersey

  • In a move echoing the tribute to cricket legends, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire the iconic No.7 jersey worn by former captain MS Dhoni. This decision follows the precedent set by Sachin Tendulkar's No.10, retired in 2017. Going forward, no other Indian cricketer will sport the No.7 jersey.
  • The retirement of jerseys is a unique tradition in cricket, symbolising the reverence for legendary players. Sachin Tendulkar's No.10 was the first to be retired, and now, M. S. Dhoni's No.7 joins this exclusive list.

Hardik Pandya Replaces Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians Captain

  • Hardik Pandya was named as the new captain of the Mumbai Indians for the Indian Premier League's (IPL) 2024 edition. He replaced Rohit Sharma in the role. Hardik was traded from Gujarat Titans back to the Mumbai franchise after he had led the Titans to back-to-back finals in their first two seasons.

Khelo India Para Games: Manish Narwal Clinches Air Pistol Gold

  • Top Indian para shooter Manish Narwal won the men's 10m air pistol (SH1 category) gold in the Khelo India Para Games.
  • Narwal, who had won gold in P4 mixed 50m pistol SH1 category in the Tokyo Paralympics, and a bronze in 10m air pistol SH1 at the Para Asian Games in Hangzhou recently, scored 240.2 to stand on the top of the podium at the Karni Singh shooting ranges.

Sri Lanka Appoints New Selectors Headed by Former Star Upul Tharanga

  • Sri Lanka Cricket formed a new 'Cricket Selection Committee' for a period of two years to select national teams.
  • The committee is chaired by Sri Lanka's former One Day captain Upul Tharanga, while Ajantha Mendis, Indika De Saram, Tharanga Paranavitana and Dilruwan Perera are its members.
  • The first official task of the Selection Committee is to select the national squad for the Zimbabwe Tour of Sri Lanka 2024.

  • Indian wrestler Antim Panghal was named the Rising Star of the Year among women by the United World Wrestling (UWW), the sport's global governing body. The 19-year-old dynamo, competing in the 53 kg category, had a remarkable season that has not only garnered accolades but has also overshadowed senior stalwart Vinesh Phogat in the same weight class.

India Women Create History with 410 Runs on Day 1 of Only Test against England

  • India women cricket team created history by scoring 410 runs on day 1 of the only Test against England at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. This is the second highest score ever in a day in a women's Test behind England's 431/4 against New Zealand in 1935.
  • This is also the third time ever that 400-plus runs have been scored in a single day of a women's Test with the third occasion, apart from aforementioned two, being day 4 of Australia vs England Test in 2022. While the 1935 Test saw 475 runs being scored by England and New Zealand combined, 449 runs were scored between Australia and England in December 2022.

Shreyas Iyer to Lead KKR in IPL 2024, Nitish Rana Named Vice-captain

  • India batter Shreyas Iyer was named skipper of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming season (2024). Nitish Rana, who led the side in Iyer's absence in IPL 2023, was named the vice-captain of the side. Iyer had missed the entire season last year (2023) due to a back injury.

  • Former doubles world No. 1 Leander Paes and broadcaster and promoter Vijay Amritraj of India became the first Asian men to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
  • Besides the duo, renowned journalist and writer Richard Evans was also elected for the ultimate honour in Tennis.

IPL Becomes a Decacorn with Valuation of $10.7 Billion

  • The Indian Premier League (IPL) achieved the status of decacorn after a 28 per cent rise in its brand valuation to $10.7 billion, according to a report released by Brand Finance. A decacorn is a privately held company with a valuation of $10 billion or more. IPL's brand value was $8.4 billion in 2022. Since 2008, when the league was launched, IPL's brand value has jumped 433 per cent from the $2 billion valuation after season one.
  • Among the IPL franchises, Mumbai Indians was the most valuable, with a valuation of $87 million. It has been at the top of the list since 2020.
  • MI was followed by Chennai Super Kings with a valuation of $80.6 million, Kolkata Knight Riders were in third place at $78.6 million, followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore at $69.8 million.
  • Gujarat Titans was the fifth highest-valued IPL team with a valuation of $65.4 million. Notably, CSK's brand value has more than doubled since its debut in 2008.

National Basketball Championship Final: Railway Women Retain Title; Tamil Nadu Men Beat Railways

  • Tamil Nadu men's team and the Railways women's side lifted the trophies as the curtains fell on the eight-day extravaganza of the 73rd Senior National Basketball Championships (Men and Women) in Ludhiana.
  • The women's team from Railways dominated their counterparts from Kerala, with the final score line reading 80-50. Tamil Nadu men edged Railways in a much-closer final 72-67.
  • In the men's competition, the home team Punjab brought joy for the fans by clinching the bronze medal. The side edged out Delhi in the third-place play-off with a 71-65 score line
  • The women's team from Tamil Nadu bagged the bronze medal, ousting Karnataka in a keenly contested match 65-54.
