Australian Olympic Cyclist Melissa Hoskins Dies

Melissa Hoskins, a revered Australian Olympic track cyclist and former world champion, tragically passed away at the age of 32 in a devastating incident.
Known for her remarkable achievements in track cycling, Hoskins secured the world champion title and set a global record in 2015 as an integral part of Australia's women's team pursuit quartet. Her dedication shone through in her appearances at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, narrowly missing a medal in the 2012 London Games by a mere 0.181 seconds.

Indian Teenager Anahat Singh Bags Girls' Under-19 2023 Scottish Junior Open title at Edinburgh

Talented Indian teenager Anahat Singh produced a dominant performance, bagging the girls' under-19 title at the 2023 Scottish Junior Open squash held in Edinburgh. Anahat claimed a 11-6, 11-1, 11-5 victory over home favourite Robyn McAlpine in the final. It capped off a spectacular year for Delhi's Anahat, who recorded the under-19 and senior National championship double and won the mixed doubles bronze along with Abhay Singh both at the Asian Games and in the inaugural Asian Mixed Doubles Championships.

Australian Batter David Warner Announces Retirement from ODIs

David Warner announced his retirement from ODI cricket. The veteran put forth his decision two days before playing his farewell Test match against Pakistan to be played at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
The left-handed opener compiled 6,932 runs in 161 ODIs at an average of 45.30, at a strike rate of 97.26. Warner has also registered 22 centuries and 33 fifties in the format, with the best score of 179.
Warner retires as the sixth-highest run-scorer in Australian ODI history, having amassed 6,932 runs from his 161 matches. His 22 centuries are the second most by any Australian ODI player, behind only Ricky Ponting, who made 29 in 105 more innings than Warner played.

WFI Row: Vinesh Phogat Returns Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award

Multiple World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat returned her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award, keeping the two awards lying in the middle of National Capital's Kartavya Path after Delhi Police stopped her from reaching the Prime Minister's Office.
Earlier the Asian Games gold medallist grappler had decided to return her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to the government, saying such honours have become meaningless at a time when wrestlers are struggling to get justice.

Savita Punia to Lead India in Olympics Qualifiers in Ranchi

Veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia will continue to lead side and Vandana Katariya will be her deputy as Hockey India named an 18-member Indian women's team for the Olympic Qualifiers scheduled to be held in Ranchi from January 13 to 19.
India will take the field in Ranchi looking to finish as one of the top three teams in the competition and secure qualification for the Paris Olympics 2024.
India will open their campaign against the United States on January 13, followed by a match against New Zealand on January 14. They will go up against Italy in the last Pool B match on January 16.

While the South African bowlers were bowling thunderbolts on a green pitch, Virat Kohli played a brilliant counter-attacking 76. Though the team lost by a huge margin, the Indian batter, during his sublime knock, added another record to his illustrious career.
Kohli went past 2000 runs in a calendar year for the seventh time in his career. No other batter has achieved the feat in the 146 years of cricket (Since the records have been kept). He previously achieved the feat in 2012 (2186 runs), 2014 (2286 runs), 2016 (2595 runs), 2017 (2818 runs), 2018 (2735 runs), and 2019 (2455 runs).

P. V. Sindhu Makes it into Forbes List of Highest Paid Women Athletes in 2023

Badminton star P. V. Sindhu made it into the list of 2023's highest paid women athletes by Forbes where she finished at the 16th spot alongside gymnast Simone Biles with her $7.1 million earnings.
The Forbes list is headed by Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek who is valued at $23.9 million. She won the French Open and ended the year as the No.1 ranked player in the world.

Indian Wrestler Pooja Dhanda Suspended for One Year Due to Whereabouts Failures

Indian wrestler Pooja Dhanda, who won the bronze medal at the 2018 World Championships in the 57kg, was handed a one-year ban by India's National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) due to three whereabouts failures.
Pooja Dhanda was charged with three whereabouts failures and banned for one year by the disciplinary panel in December 2023. Her suspension started in June 2023.
NADA, formed in 2005, is India's central anti-doping agency and authorised to conduct 'in competition' and 'out of competition' testing of Indian athletes. It operates under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations. It is headquartered in New Delhi.
The agency is formed by the Union Government under National anti doping Act 2022 and includes scientists and representatives from the Indian Olympic Association.

IOA Forms Three-member ad Hoc Wrestling Committee after Suspension of WFI

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) formed a committee of three members for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Bhupendra Singh Bajwa was appointed as the Chairman, M. M. Somaya as a member, and Manjusha Kanwar as another member of the ad-hoc committee created by the Indian Olympic Association upon the directive of the Ministry of Sports following the suspension of the new body of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). This committee will oversee various tasks and activities of the WFI.
These include player selection, sending names of players for international tournaments, organizing sporting events, supervising, and managing bank accounts.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) or Indian Olympic Committee (IOC) is responsible for selecting athletes to represent India at the Olympic Games, Asian Games and other international sports competitions, and managing Indian teams at these events. It goes with the name of Team India.
The Indian Olympic Association was formed in 1927, and since that year was officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee as India's national Olympic organisation. In 1928, Maharaja Bhupindra Singh took over as Indian Olympic Association president. Sir Dorabji Tata was the first president of Indian Olympic Association from 1927 – 1928.
