Elvis Ali Hazarika Becomes First from North-east to Cross North Channel

  • Elvis Ali Hazarika a veteran Assamese swimmer became the first from the North-east to cross the North Channel. The strait between north-eastern Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland is the North Channel.
  • Elvis Ali Hazarika also became the oldest Indian swimmer to swim across the North Channel. To attain this feat, Elvis and his team clocked a timing of 14 hours 38 minutes.
  • In 2019, he became the first person from Assam to swim across the Catalina Channel in the United States of America.
  • Elvis also became the first Assamese to successfully swim from Dharamtar Jetty to the Gateway of India, the Arabian Sea, in November 2021. The length of which is approx 38 kilometres.

India's First MotoGP to be Held in Noida's Buddh Circuit in 2023

  • Moto GP, the premier motorcycle racing event, will be held for the first time in India at Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida in 2023.
  • Dorna Sports, which owns the commercial rights for MotoGP, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Fairstreet Sports to hold the championship in India for seven years.
  • Riders from as many as 19 countries would participate in the event called "Grand Prix of Bharat", which would give a push to trade and tourism in the country, besides generating employment.

Indian Olympics Association's Acting President Resigns

  • In an expected move, Anil Khanna resigned as the Indian Olympics Association's (IOA) acting president. Khanna had become the acting president after the removal of Narinder Batra.
  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC), earlier this month, warned the IOA of suspension if it does not hold elections by December. In the same letter, the international body said that it does not recognise any interim/acting president and that IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta would serve as the main point of contact.

SAFF Women's Championship: Bangladesh Beat Nepal to Clinch Maiden Title

  • Bangladesh clinched their maiden SAFF Women's Championship title after they beat hosts Nepal 3-1 at the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu.
  • With this win, Bangladesh broke India's dominance in this competition who were knocked out earlier by host country Nepal for the very first time in the history of this tournament.
  • Krishna Rani scored the second goal for Bangladesh in the 42nd minute, following Shamsunnahar Jr's opener in the 14th minute and ensured Bangladesh's victory with another expert finish in the 77th minute.

Linda Fruhvirtova Wins Chennai Open 2022 Title

  • Czech teenager Linda Fruhvirtova upset No.3 seed Magda Linette 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the singles final of the Chennai Open WTA 250 tennis tournament and claimed her first-ever Tour title.
  • In the doubles, the top-seed Canadian-Brazilian pair of Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani defeated Anna Blinkova (Russia) and Natela Dzalamidze (Georgia) 6-1, 6-2 to claim the title in Chennai.

Sunil Chhetri-led Bengaluru FC Wins Maiden Durand Cup Title

  • Bengaluru FC and their talismanic captain Sunil Chhetri won their maiden Durand Cup football tournament title after beating Mumbai City FC 2-1 in the summit clash. Goals from Siva Sakthi in the 10th minute and Alan Costa's 61st-minute strike were enough to help Bengaluru lift the crown. Apuia got the lone goal for the Mumbai side in an entertaining match.
  • The former Foreign Secretary of British India, Mortimer Durand founded the Durand Cup in 1888. The Durand Cup was initially played only by the Armed services but in later years, the game was officially made open for the Professional Football Clubs. The Durand Cup is annually organized by the Durand Cup Football Tournament in association with the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The winner of the tournament is facilitated with three trophies, the Durand Cup, the President's Cup, and the Shimla Trophy.

Pranav Anand Becomes India's 76th Chess Grandmaster

  • Bengaluru teenager Pranav Anand became India's 76th Grandmaster after he crossed the 2,500 Elo mark in the ongoing World Youth Chess Championship in Mamaia, Romania.
  • The 15-year-old, had already met the other requirements that are necessary for a GM title.
  • To become a GM, a player has to secure three GM norms and cross the live rating of 2,500 Elo points.

Bajrang Punia Becomes First Indian to Win Four Medals at Worlds

  • Bajrang Punia created history after he secured a bronze medal and became the first Indian wrestler to win four medals at the World Wrestling Championships.
  • Bajrang eked out an 11-9 win over Sebastian C. Rivera of Puerto Rico in one of the bronze medal bouts in the 65kg category.
  • Bajrang, who lost to John Michael Diakomihalis of USA in the quarter-finals, qualified for the bronze medal contest through the repechage round. He defeated Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia 7-6 before taking down Rivera.
  • Bajrang had earlier won bronze in 2013, silver in 2018 and bronze in 2019.

Punjab Kings Replaces Kumble with Trevor Bayliss as Head Coach

  • IPL side Punjab Kings appointed Trevor Bayliss as the team's new head coach ahead for the next season of the franchise-based T20 tournament.
  • Bayliss replaced Anil Kumble after the former India cricketer's contract was not renewed by Punjab Kings following a poor string of performances by the side under his guidance.
  • Bayliss brings in his experience of winning the 2019 50 over World Cup with England, two IPL titles with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014 besides a BBL title with the Sydney Sixers.

Mumbai Indians Appoint South African Legend Mark Boucher as Head Coach

  • Mumbai Indians appointed former South African wicket-keeper Mark Boucher as their head coach starting next season of the Indian Premier League.
  • Mumbai Indians had an abysmal season last time, finishing at the bottom of the points table with only four wins out of 14 matches.
