Rachin Ravindra Hits 5th ODI Ton, Breaks Shikhar Dhawan's World Record

  • New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra and his stellar performances in ICC ODI events continue as he raised his fifth century in the format during the all-important semi-final clash against South Africa in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
  • Rachin Ravindra surpassed former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan to hold the record for the least innings taken to score five centuries in ICC ODI tournaments like the Champions Trophy and the World Cup. Along with the two tons he scored in the ongoing tournament (Champions Trophy 2025), he also scored three centuries in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where New Zealand was eliminated in the semi-final stage.
  • Dhawan held the record, having reached five centuries in ICC ODI tournaments in 15 innings, but Ravindra bettered that by doing it in just 13 innings.

Steve Smith Announces Retirement from One-Day Internationals

  • Steve Smith, the veteran Australia batter, announced his retirement from ODI cricket following his team's defeat to India in the semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025. However, he will continue playing Tests and T20Is for his country.
  • Smith retired having scored 5800 runs from 170 ODIs for Australia, including 12 centuries, but more importantly as a two-time World Champions. He was part of Australia's World Cup-winning squads in 2015 under Michael Clarke and in 2023 under Pat Cummins.

Table Tennis Legend Achanta Sharath Kamal Announces Retirement

  • India table tennis great Achanta Sharath Kamal confirmed his retirement from professional table tennis, saying that the upcoming WTT Contender Chennai (March 25 to 30) will be his last tournament, capping off an illustrious career spanning over two decades.
  • Sharath's journey has been decorated with 13 Commonwealth Games medals, among them seven gold medals, and bronze medals at the Asian Games and Asian Championships. No Indian table tennis player has graced the Olympics more times than Sharath (5), culminating in the honour of being India's male flag-bearer at Paris 2024. A 10-time national champion, he was the first Indian to win an ITTF Pro Tour title, breaking barriers for Indian TT, and will now look to do the same on home soil at the WTT Star Contender Chennai.
  • He is also the recipient of the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.

Salman Agha Named Pakistan T20 Captain

  • Pakistan all-rounder Salman Agha was named skipper of their Twenty20 International team while Mohammad Rizwan will continue to lead the one-day international side, the country's cricket board said.
  • Shadab Khan was named Agha's deputy, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) added, as it named squads for five T20s and three ODIs against New Zealand starting on March 16.
  • There was no place for senior batsman Babar Azam in the T20 side while Rizwan was also left out of a young squad as Pakistan look ahead to the T20 Asia Cup in September and next year's T20 World Cup.

Brandon Holt Clinches the 2025 Bengaluru Open ATP 125 Challenger Title

  • The 2025 Bengaluru Open ATP 125 Challenger witnessed an intense competition among top tennis players, culminating in an electrifying final match. Brandon Holt of the United States emerged victorious, defeating Shintaro Mochizuki of Japan and claimed the singles title at the KSLTA Tennis Stadium, Bengaluru. The tournament, part of the ATP Challenger Tour, carried a prize pool of $200,000 and was played on hard courts.
  • This ATP 125 Challenger event was the fourth and final ATP Challenger tournament held in India in 2025, following the Chennai Open, Delhi Open, and Maharashtra Open. Each of these tournaments featured top-tier competition and contributed to players' ATP rankings.

Virat Kohli Becomes Seventh Indian Cricketer to Play 300 ODIs

  • Virat Kohli, one of India's greatest cricketers, reached a historic milestone. During the Champions Trophy match against New Zealand in Dubai, he played his 300th One Day International (ODI) match. With this achievement, Kohli became the 7th Indian and 22nd player in the world to reach this milestone.
  • The list is led by Sachin Tendulkar, who played 463 matches.

Gulmarg Gears Up for Khelo India Winter Games 2025 after Heavy Snowfall

  • The famous ski resort of Gulmarg, located in Jammu and Kashmir, is all set to host the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2025 from March 9 to 12. The much-awaited event was earlier scheduled from February 22 to 25, but due to a lack of snow, it had to be postponed. With fresh moderate to heavy snowfall in the region, the sports council confirmed that Gulmarg is now ready to host the competition.
  • The Khelo India Winter Games 2025 will feature a range of winter sports disciplines, including: Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Ski Mountaineering and Snowboarding.
  • As per the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council, the games will witness participation from 30 teams, comprising around 1,000 athletes and officers from various states and sports boards across India. The event is expected to draw national attention, with top-tier athletes showcasing their skills in different winter sports.

India to Host World Para Athletics Grand Prix from March 11 to 13

  • India is set to mark a historic moment in athletics by hosting its first-ever World Para Athletics Grand Prix, a landmark event that promises to elevate the country's track and field landscape.
  • Scheduled from March 11 to 13 at the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, the event will feature over 90 competitions across three days and will witness participation from elite para-athletes representing 20 countries.
  • Top countries like Germany, Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and many more countries' athletes will be participating in the event.
  • The Grand Prix will be graced by the presence of Majid Rashed, the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) President, and Tarek Souei, the CEO of the Asian Paralympic Committee, along with key dignitaries from the Indian sports ecosystem.

  • Kolkata Knight Riders appointed Ajinkya Rahane as captain and Venkatesh Iyer as vice-captain for the 2025 IPL season.
  • Rahane's return as an IPL captain marks a remarkable turnaround. Initially unsold after a lacklustre stint with CSK, KKR secured him for his base price of Rs. 1.50 crore in the accelerated auction round.
  • KKR has won three IPL titles (2012, 2014, 2024) and finished as runner-up in 2021.

  • Krishna Jayasankar currently studying in Texas, United States, sent happy tidings from the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championship held in Albuquerque, as she became the new record-holder in indoor shot put among the Indian women.
  • Krishna tossed the iron sphere to a new distance of 16.03 metres that bettered the previous Indian indoor best of 15.54 m by Maharashtra's Poornarao Rane, another US residing student athlete.

  • Yuva All Stars Championship 2025, a first of its kind tournament in the kabaddi ecosystem, will begin on March 6 at Vandna Kataria Indoor Stadium in Haridwar.
  • There will be four matches every day and the Championship will conclude on April 4 with a grand finale.

Vidarbha Wins Third Ranji Trophy Crown

  • A magnificent run in domestic cricket this season culminated in a third Ranji Trophy title for Vidarbha, who emerged champions on the basis of their first-innings lead in the summit clash.
  • The fate of the contest was all but sealed on the third evening when Vidarbha edged ahead with a slender lead of 37 runs in the first innings, having dismissed a doughty Kerala for 342 after putting on 379 runs batting first.
  • It is for the third time that Vidarbha won the Ranji Trophy title, having done so earlier with their two consecutive wins in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

  • Karting sensation Atiqa Mir (10) became the first Indian and Asian to be signed by Formula 1 Academy for its driver program, a testament to her rapid growth in the world of motorsport.
  • F1 Academy, a female only racing series owned by Formula 1, has decided to take Atiqa on board for its Discover Your Drive Program (DYD) after closely tracking her stellar performances on the karting circuit.
  • The racer from Jammu and Kashmir is only one of three drivers in the mini category (age 8-11) worldwide to be chosen for the DYD program.
