New Species of Long Necked Dinosaurs

  • Scientists have discovered a new species of long-necked titanosaurian dinosaur in Tanzania that lived about 70 to 100 million years ago.

Effect of Climate Change on Fish

  • According to a new study, the size of the fish could be expected to reduce by 20 to 30 per cent as a result of rising ocean temperatures due to climate change across the globe.
  • Warmer waters increase fish's need for oxygen but climate change will result in less oxygen in the oceans.

Old Trading Network Uncovered

  • Archaeologists have uncovered a vast trading network which operated in Vietnam from around 4,500 years ago up until around 3,000 years ago.
  • The discovery significantly changes what is known about early Vietnamese culture.
  • A study by researchers shows a number of settlements along the Mekong Delta region of Southern Vietnam were part of a sophisticated scheme where large volumes of items were manufactured and circulated over hundreds of kilometres.

East Antarctic Ice Sheet

  • A new study validates that the central core of the East Antarctic ice sheet should remain stable even if the West Antarctic ice sheet melts.
  • According to Kathy Licht, if the East Antarctic ice sheet, which is 10 times larger than the western ice sheet, melted completely, it would cause sea levels worldwide to rise almost 200 feet.

Largest Volcanic Region on Earth

  • Scientists have uncovered the largest volcanic region on Earth, consisting of almost 100 volcanoes two kilometres below the surface of the vast Antarctic ice sheet.
  • The newly discovered volcanoes range in height from 100 to 3,850 metres. All of them are covered in thick layers of ice.
  • These active peaks are concentrated in a region known as the west Antarctic rift system, which stretches 3,500 km from Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf to the Antarctic Peninsula.
