Jitendra Singh Inaugurates the International 52nd Annual Conference of RSSDI

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh, a nationally acclaimed Professor and Diabetologist, inaugurated the International 52nd Annual Conference of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), advocating proactive Diabetes prevention before the symptoms appear and in pre-diabetic stage.
  • The Minister emphasised the importance of pre-emptive strategies in preventing diabetes before symptoms develop, particularly among young people and pregnant women. His address highlighted the urgency of tackling India's rising diabetes burden and the essential role of early intervention in reducing its impact on public health.

Eighth South and South-West Asia Subregional Forum on SDGs

  • The Eighth South and South-West Asia Forum on Sustainable Development took place in New Delhi, co-hosted by the NITI Aayog of the Government of India and ESCAP, in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator and the Research and Information System for Developing Countries. The Subregional Forum is organised annually as the subregional preparatory meetings for the Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) at the regional level and the ECOSOC High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the global level. ESCAP, led by its Subregional Office for South and South-West Asia, has organised the South and South-West Asia Subregional Forum with rotating co-host governments and UN Resident Coordinators since 2017. The Forum facilitates dialogue between government officials, civil society, think-tanks, private sector, experts and development partners on the designated themes and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the annual APFSD and HLPF. It offers a unique opportunity among multiple stakeholders to exchange information and reflections on SDG implementation efforts in countries and to draw common priorities and issues across the South and South-West Asia subregion. The outcomes and recommendations from the Forum feed into regional and global processes, including the abovementioned APFSD and HLPF in the following year.

'Know Your Medicine' App Launched to Promote Clean Sports

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, has launched a nationwide call to action to strengthen the fight against doping in sports, urging athletes, coaches, and the entire sporting community to adopt the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) India's 'Know Your Medicine (KYM)' app. 
  • Aimed at promoting integrity and fair play among athletes, the app provides users with a quick way to verify if a medicine or its ingredients contain prohibited substances listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
  • It supports athletes in avoiding accidental consumption of banned substances.

Amaravati Capital Project Gets Loan from World Bank and ADB

  • In a step forward for the development of Amaravati, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) agreed to grant a loan of Rs. 13,500 crore for its development. This financial support is aimed at creating a sustainable and inclusive city with improved infrastructure and governance.
  • The loan agreement was finalised following a series of negotiations between the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA), the World Bank, ADB, and the Union Finance Ministry.

AAP's Mahesh Khichi New Delhi Mayor

  • The Aam Aadmi Party's Mahesh Khichi elected the next mayor of Delhi, in a major boost to the ruling party in the national capital ahead of the Assembly polls due early next year (2025).
  • Khichi, a Dalit candidate fielded by the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, defeated the BJP's Kishan Lal by a thin margin of three votes. While Khichi got 133 votes, Lal secured 130 votes. Two votes were declared invalid.
  • The polls, which were delayed from April due to a protracted war of words between the AAP and the BJP, saw the Congress boycott the voting process, demanding a full term for the mayor rather than the truncated tenure now on offer.

EAM, Odisha CM Launch Pravasi Bharatiya Divas website

  • Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Divas jointly with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar launched the website (pbdindia.gov.in) of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in New Delhi.
  • The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention will be held from January 8 to 10, 2025, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The convention will provide an opportunity to the Indians living abroad to witness the rich history, cultural and spiritual heritage of Odisha.

Jyotiraditya Scindia Inaugurates SATRC 25

  • Union Minister for Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, inaugurated the 25th Meeting of the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators' Council (SATRC-25) in New Delhi. In his keynote address, Scindia highlighted India's role as the "Voice of the Global South" and emphasised that SATRC-25 would be a vital platform for knowledge-sharing and innovative discussions on new policy and regulatory challenges.
  • Attendees included Heads of Regulators and affiliate members from SATRC member countries, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • The event was organised by the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) and hosted by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
  • A three-day event brought together regional experts, international delegates, and industry representatives.
  • Key agenda items included radio frequency coordination, telecommunication strategies, regulatory trends, and international telecom affairs.

Power Ministers' Conference 2024: Advancing India's Energy Future

  • The Union Minister for Power, Manohar Lal Khattar, chaired the Conference of Power Ministers of States and Union Territories in New Delhi, aimed at addressing key issues in the power sector. The conference focused on operational performance, financial health of DISCOMs, and the integration of renewable energy. In addition to the Union Minister, the event was attended by the Minister of State for Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, as well as representatives from multiple states, including the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, three Deputy Chief Ministers, and 12 Power Ministers.
  • The conference saw detailed discussions on improving the financial viability of DISCOMs, the implementation of Smart Metering, and the progress of flagship schemes such as PM-Surya Ghar Yojana. Key issues such as resource adequacy, energy storage, and the promotion of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure were also highlighted.
  • The launch of Powerthon Phase-II was a key highlight, focusing on integrating AI-driven solutions to address DISCOM challenges. The initiative will support up to Rs. 37 crore in financial assistance for developing 40 innovative technological solutions to improve operational efficiency.

Foreign Secretary Misri Granted Extension

  • The tenure of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was extended till July 2026. He was scheduled to retire on November 30. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension in service to Misri, a 1989-batch IFS officer. Misri had assumed charge as the Foreign Secretary on July 15. He has held important positions in the past. He has served both in the MEA and the PMO.

India's First Solar Power Storage Plant to Come Up in MP's Morena

  • India's first solar power storage plant will be set up soon in Madhya Pradesh's Morena. The work for constructing the storage plant, which can supply electricity during the night as well, will begin from next year and the plant will be functional by 2027. The cost of this 600 MW capacity plant, which will be built in an area of around 3,000 hectares in Morean, is expected to be around Rs. 3,500 crore.
  • This plant is expected to reduce the cost of electricity borne by the government to provide power for the farmers during the Rabi crop season (November to April) in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh respectively.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Launches State's First Double-Decker Electric Bus

  • In a significant step toward modernising public transport and promoting eco-friendly travel, Uttar Pradesh's Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, launched the state's first double-decker electric bus at the Aakanksha Haat programme held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan. 
  • This initiative aims not only to tackle the growing traffic problems in urban areas but also to contribute toward environmental conservation. The launch event, marked by the CM's announcement of discounted fares for women passengers, was met with immense enthusiasm, underlining the state government's commitment to promoting sustainable transportation solutions

  • As part of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG)'s National e-Governance Webinar Series (NeGW 2023–24), a Special Webinar on Citizen-Centric Services provided by Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) was held. The webinar was co-chaired by V. Srinivas, Secretary, DARPG, and Vivek Bharadwaj, Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR), who delivered keynote remarks, sharing key insights and outlining the vision for the pivotal role of PRIs in delivering essential services to rural citizens.
  • This webinar sought to emphasise the crucial role that Panchayats, as the third tier of local self-government, play in rural governance, particularly in ensuring the timely and effective delivery of essential services to rural citizens. The focus was on prioritising citizen-centric interventions to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of services, enhancing the overall governance at the grassroots level.
  • Panchayati Raj Institutions, operating at the grassroots level, are at the forefront of governance, ensuring that government schemes, welfare programs, and citizen services reach every corner of rural India.
