IIT Madras, IIS- Karnataka Partner to Develop Boxing Analytics Software

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras researchers along with Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) in Bellary, Karnataka, are developing a cost-effective boxing analytics platform to increase India's boxing medal tally at the 2024 Olympics.
  • An analytics platform called 'Smartboxer,' being developed as a multi-version software by the Center of Excellence for Sports Science and Analytics at IIT Madras, will provide an above-par competitive edge to Indian athletes. It will provide feedback and performance assessments using Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled wearable sensors and video cameras.
  • 'Smartboxer' will be deployed to analyse the boxers' performance at Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS). Based on the feedback from IIS, changes will be incorporated into the 'Smartboxer' analytics platform. This will enable the software to be effectively used to assist coaches and boxers. This will aid in solving sporting problems and designing better sports equipment.

Beijing Tops, Bengaluru 2nd in Asia-Pacific in Tech Hubs

  • Bengaluru ranked second in the Asia Pacific region in the top tech hubs list and is only behind China's Beijing, according to a report by Cushman and Wakefield. The report, called 'Tech Cities: The Global Intersection of Talent and Real Estate', studied as many as 115 different 'tech cities' across the globe. After Beijing and Bengaluru, the list has three other Indian cities, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Mumbai and Pune also made it to the top-10 list with eighth and ninth position in a list of 14 cities from the APAC.
  • The study considered factors such as talent, real estate and business environment to assess and evaluate the cities.

Russia's Only Female Cosmonaut Ready for Flight to Space Station

  • Russia's only active female cosmonaut, Anna Kikina, said Friday she was ready for her upcoming flight to the International Space Station aboard Space X's Crew Dragon.
  • The flight, scheduled for October 3, is set to go ahead despite soaring tensions between Moscow and Washington over Russia's military intervention in Ukraine.
  • Kikina, a 37-year-old engineer, will be only the fifth professional woman cosmonaut from Russia or the Soviet Union to fly to space.
  • She will also be the first Russian to travel aboard a Crew Dragon spacecraft, as part of a cross-flights deal between NASA and Russia's space agency Roscosmos.

IIT Guwahati Developed Technique for Making Sugar Substitute "Xylitol"

  • Researchers at IIT Guwahati have created a fermentation process that uses ultrasound to safely generate Xylitol from sugarcane bagasse, the byproduct of crushing sugar cane.
  • This approach gets over the operational constraints of chemical synthesis and the time lags of traditional fermentation.
  • The use of ultrasound during the fermentation process not only reduced the time of fermentation to 15 hours, but also increased the yield of the product by almost 20%.

World's First Fleet of Hydrogen Passenger Trains by Germany

  • The world's first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains was launched by Germany. The first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains has replaced 15 diesel trains that were previously operated on non-electrified tracks in Lower Saxony, Germany.
  • The engine of the trains is powered by electricity generated using hydrogen fuel cells. The use of hydrogen is a clean alternative to fossil fuels as per the German government's announcement.
  • The state governor Stephan Weil said that Lower Saxony has invested a total of 93 million euros for the first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger train projects. This invitation is an excellent example and effort to make the economy of Germany greener.
