Centre Recognises E-Sports as Part of 'Multi-Sport' Event

  • The Government of India gave E-sports a major boost by integrating it with mainline sports disciplines in the country.
  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in exercise of the powers "conferred by clause (3) of article 77 of the Constitution" amended the rules governing E-sports and asked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Sports Ministry to include "E-sports as part of multi-sports events".
  • There had been a growing demand for E-sports to be included in the curriculum of multi-discipline events after it was included in the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games as a demonstration sport, meaning medals won in the sport were not counted in the official overall medals tally.

L. Dhanush Bags Gold in Youth Men's 49 kg Section of National Weightlifting Championships

  • Son of a carpenter in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu's 16-year-old L. Dhanush bagged a gold medal in the youth men's 49 kg section of the National (junior, youth & senior) weightlifting championships at the Ponjesly College of Engineering, Tamil Nadu.
  • Dhanush did an average 81 kg in snatch and went on to create a National record in clean & jerk (110 kg) with a total of 191Kg, pushing his state-mate V. Kishore (188) to the second position. Dhanush rewrote the record set by Bhaktaram Desti (108 kg).

Uttarakhand Govt. to Set up World-class Kayaking-Canoeing Academy in Tehri

  • Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy RK Singh said that a world-class Kayaking-Canoeing Academy is to be set up at Tehri in Uttarakhand. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Championship "Tehri Water Sports Cup" at Tehri Lake, he exclaimed that the promotion of sports is the priority of the Union Government.
  • This is the first time that the national-level sports competition is being organized at Tehri Lake. He said that the making of Tehri Lake an international tourism destination is being done at a fast pace.

Arunkumar Jagadeesh Appointed as Mumbai Indians' Assistant Batting Coach

  • Indian Premier League's most successful franchise Mumbai Indians roped in Arunkumar Jagadeesh as their assistant batting coach.
  • A right-handed opening batter and a veteran of over 100 First Class games, Arunkumar Jagadeesh represented Karnataka in the Indian domestic circuit for 16 long years from 1993 to 2008.
  • After retirement, he turned to be a mentor and was the batting coach of the Karnataka side when they won their back-to-back titles in the Ranji Trophy, the Irani Cup and the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

South Africa's Farhaan Behardien Retires from Cricket

  • South African white-ball specialist and former T20I skipper Farhaan Behardien announced his retirement from professional cricket.
  • Behardien played 59 ODIs and 38 T20Is and captained the Proteas in a three-match T20 series against Sri Lankan in 2017.
  • Predominantly a batter, he made 1074 ODI runs and 518 T20I runs, though it was his prolific run-scoring in domestic cricket which stood out. Behardien made his first-class debut in 2004 and scored more than 7,000 runs in 125 games with his highest being an unbeaten 150.
  • He had to wait eight years to make his South Africa debut and became a regular in the white-ball side.
  • He was part of the Proteas' T20 World Cup campaigns in 2012, 2014 and 2016 as well as the ODI World Cup in 2015.
  • He last represented South Africa in November 2018 in a T20I against Australia in Carrara.

Russell Domingo Resigns as Bangladesh Head Coach

  • Two days after the home Test series against India, Russell Domingo resigned as the Bangladesh head coach without completing his tenure that ran till the 2023 World Cup.
  • Domingo joined as head coach in September 2019 after the BCB sacked Steve Rhodes following the World Cup debacle that year. Under him, Bangladesh won T20I series against Australia and New Zealand at home, a Test in New Zealand (for the first time), an ODI series win in South Africa and at home against India.

Brijesh Damani Wins National Billiards Championship

  • Asian Games silver medallist Brijesh Damani won his maiden National Billiards Championship as he got the better of his fellow PSPB player Dhruv Sitwala in Indore.
  • The match was level till four games (2-2) when Brijesh accelerated to take a 4-3 lead. He then played all across the table to dominate in the eighth game and won the title 5-3.
  • Indian Oil's Brijesh had defeated B. Bhaskar of Karnataka and reigning World 6Red Champion S. Shrikrishna in quarterfinal and semifinal respectively.
  • Brijesh has six international medals, including a silver at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games.

Hockey India Signs Limca Sportz for Men's World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela

  • Hockey India announced its partnership with the Coca-Cola company-owned Limca Sportz as an official beverage partner for the FIH Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar - Rourkela from January 2023.
  • As part of the engagement, the low-sugar beverage Limca Sportz, a product of the Coca-Cola Company, will be supplying all the company's beverages across venues during the course of the tournament. Limca Sportz is a water-based sports product launched in 2022.
