China First Cargo Spacecraft

  • China has launched its first cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-1 from the Wenchang Space Launch Centre in Hainan province.
  • Tianzhou-1 is the first cargo ship independently developed by China.
  • The cargo spacecraft will dock with the orbiting Tiangong-2 space lab, provide fuel and other supplies, and conduct space experiments before returning.

New Exoplanet Discovered

  • Astronomers have discovered a new exoplanet which is about three times more massive than Jupiter, orbiting a star 21,000 light years away from Earth.
  • The team found that MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb is a super-Jupiter planet with the mass of about 2.8 Jupiter masses.
  • MOA-2016-BLG-227Lb orbits its host at a distance of about 1.67 astronomical unit.

No More Animal Testing

  • Product testing on animals is a practice that is firmly looked down upon and highly condemned. In some cities around the world, it is also a forbidden act.
  • Now, to curb such a situation and keeping in mind the safety of animals, researchers have developed a new 'organs-on-chips' technology that could replace animals for testing new drugs or supplements.
  • The flexible polymer organ-chips contain tiny channels lined with living human cells and are capable of reproducing blood and air flow just as in the human body.

Ingredient for Life at Saturn's Moon Enceladus

  • The US space agency NASA's Cassini spacecraft has discovered hydrogen in the plume of gas and icy particles spraying from Saturn's sixth largest moon Enceladus.
  • The finding provided further evidence that warm, mineral-laden water is pouring into the ocean from vents in the seafloor.
  • Enceladus now appears likely to have all three of the ingredients scientists think life needs: liquid water, a source of energy such as sunlight or chemical energy, and the right chemical ingredients like carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen.
