The Indian Space Research Organisation has successfully launched India's priceless gift, ‘the South Asia Satellite’, from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
The project, proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to benefit all the countries from the region.
Launching aboard the Indian space agency’s rocket GSLV-F09, the South Asia Satellite or GSAT-9 is meant for providing communication and disaster support and connectivity among the countries of South Asia region. Its mission life will span 12 years.

Super Fast Camera to capture Movement of Light
Scientists have developed a super fast camera that can film at an unprecedented rate of five trillion images a second, fast enough to capture the movement of light. The new technology called Frequency Recognition Algorithm for Multiple Exposures ( FRAME) is based on an innovative algorithm, and captures several coded images in one picture. The film camera is initially intended to be used by researchers who want to gain better insight into many of the extremely rapid processes that occur in nature.
Device to Measure Walking Speed
MIT scientists have developed a novel device that can measure the walking speed of multiple people with up to 99% accuracy using wireless signals. The device called “WiGait” measures walking speed without requiring that the person carry or wear a sensor.

Low-cost Solar Cells
Indian scientists at IIT Roorkee have used the juicy Indian summer fruit Jamun to create inexpensive and more efficient solar cells.
Naturally occurring pigment found in jamun as an inexpensive photosensitiser for Dye Sensitised Solar Cells (DSSCs) or Gratzel cells have been used.
Gratzel cells are thin film solar cells composed of a porous layer of titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated photoanode, a layer of dye molecules that absorbs sunlight, an electrolyte for regenerating the dye, and a cathode.
South Asia Satellite Takes off on May 5
The South Asia satellite will be launched on May 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced today, describing it as India’s “priceless gift” to its neighbours as part of the “sabka sath sabka vikas” concept. Seven out of eight SAARC countries are part of Rs 235-crore project, which Pakistan refused to join it as it did not want the gift from India.

Robotic system to 3-D Print Basic Structure of Building
Scientists have designed a robotic system that can 3-D print the basic structure of a building, an advance that would make building houses faster and less exensive. The construction method in which polyurethane foam moulds are filled with concrete, is similar to traditional formwork techniques. The system is equipped with a scoop that could be used to both prepare the building surface and acquire local materials. The idea is such that systems could be deployed to remote regions or to areas for disaster relief after a major storm or earthquake.
