SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY - August 2015

Fastest Ever Light Pulse

  • Beating its own record set in 2012, scientists have demonstrated the fastest light pulse ever developed – a 53-attosecond X-ray flash.
  • The previous record was a 67-attosecond extreme ultraviolet light pulse.
  • An attosecond is unimaginably fast at one-quintillionth of a second.

Exoplanet with Glowing Water Atmosphere

  • For the first time, scientists have discovered glowing water molecules in the atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system.
  • It is the strongest evidence to date for a stratosphere on a planet outside our solar system, or exoplanet.
  • The planet called WASP-121b is a gas giant exoplanet commonly referred to as a hot Jupiter.

Sun's Core Rotates Faster Than Its Surface

  • NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the European Space Agency (ESA) have come across a big discovery that involves the interior of the sun.
  • Solar scientists have found evidence of a type of seismic wave in our sun. Also called g-modes, these low-frequency waves reveal that the solar core is rotating some four times faster than the solar surface.
  • The rotation of the solar core may give a clue to how the sun formed.

Material To Convert CO2 into Fuel

  • Scientists have developed a material that can help convert carbon dioxide into fuel and other energy-rich products using light without generating unwanted byproducts. The achievement marks a significant step forward in developing technology that can generate fuel, while mitigating levels of a potent greenhouse gas using solar power.
  • When exposed to visible light, the material, a “spongy” nickel organic crystalline structure, converted carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon monoxide (CO) gas, which can be further turned into liquid fuels, solvents, and other useful products.

Apple to Test Its 5G Technology

  • Apple is set to begin testing its 5G technology after the US Federal Communications Commission approved its application to work towards bringing the technology to masses.
  • Apple is targeting millimetre-wave broadband at higher frequency and smaller wavelength bands.
  • Millimetre-wave technology helps in larger data transmission at faster speed. But to allow such larger data transmission to go through, a direct line of sight is needed.
  • Facebook, Google, Samsung and Starry have been already working on this technology for a while.
