SpaceX Dragon Demo Capsule

  • America's new commercial astronaut capsule will complete its demonstration flight with a splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • The SpaceX Dragon vehicle will leave the International Space Station (ISS) where it's been docked this past week and drop through the atmosphere.
  • It has a heat-shield to protect it from the high temperatures of re-entry.
  • The mission, which has no humans aboard, only a dummy covered in sensors, has gone according to the script so far.
  • Assuming the Dragon performs equally well in the coming hours, it will set the stage for the US space agency (NASA) to approve the vehicle for crewed flights.

Artificial Sun Device

  • China plans to complete the construction of the artificial sun this year, achieving an ion temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius.
  • The HL-2M Tokamak device is designed to replicate the nuclear fusion process that occurs naturally in the sun and stars to provide almost infinite clean energy through controlled nuclear fusion, which is often dubbed as the "artificial sun."
  • Achieving an ion temperature above 100 million degrees Celsius is one of the three challenges to reach the goal of harnessing the nuclear fusion, and the core of the sun is widely believed to be 15 million degree Celsius, meaning that the ion at the device's core will be seven times higher than that of the sun.

SpaceX's Capsule Docks on ISS

  •  NASA and SpaceX confirmed SpaceX's new Dragon capsule successfully docked on the International Space Station (ISS.
  • The mission is a test launch with only a dummy on board the capsule ahead of a manned flight scheduled for later this year.
  • The Dragon capsule will remain on the ISS before detaching to splash down in the Atlantic. It will be slowed by four parachutes, in what is the one of the mission's riskiest stages.

ISRO to Launch Defence Satellite

  •  As per Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K. Sivan, the Bengaluru-based space agency is set to launch an electronic intelligence satellite 'Emisat' for the DRDO in March.
  • Sivan added that ISRO will also launch 28 third-party satellites and demonstrate its new technologies like three different orbits with a new variant of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) rocket in March.

Israel's Beresheet Moon Mission

  •  The first privately financed mission to the Moon has lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
  • The Israeli robot was put on a path to the lunar body by a Falcon rocket - a trip that will take two months.
  • Beresheet, as it's known, will try to land on the lunar surface, take some pictures and conduct some experiments.
  • Only government space agencies from the US, Russia and China have previously managed soft touchdowns.

ISRO Set to Launch First 3 Orbit Mission

  •  Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch PSLV-C45 in March which will put 30 satellites in three different orbits. The PSLV-C45 will also carry a satellite for electronic intelligence.
  • Sivan said that the launch of Chandrayaan-2, India's second moon mission, the Bengaluru-based space institute is set to launch the mission by April end.
  • Sivan also talked about the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), which will launch two 'strategic purpose' satellites in July-August this year.
  • SSLV is a small satellite launcher. The first launch will take place in July-August where two small satellites will be launched. They are for a strategic purpose and will be used for monitoring and mapping.
