ASEAN opens summit with Gulf nations, China amid U.S. tariffs threat

A regional association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) is set to hold a three-day summit Tuesday with China and six Gulf countries in what officials called an effort to bolster economic resilience as they grapple with global volatility and US tariffs.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, opening a summit in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur among the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council, said a stronger ASEAN-GCC relationship would be key to enhancing interregional collaboration, building resilience and securing sustainable prosperity.

Sudan Appoints Kamil Idris as First PM Since 2023 Civil War

On May 19, 2025, Sudan's army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan appointed Kamil al-Taib Idris as the country's first prime minister since the onset of civil war in April 2023. This move is seen as a significant step toward political stabilization and the long-awaited formation of a transitional government, particularly after the Sudanese military regained control of Khartoum from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The appointment marks Sudan's first PM since 2022, when Abdalla Hamdok resigned. It follows the military's recent gains against RSF, especially the retaking of Khartoum in March 2025. The decision is part of efforts to restore civilian-led governance amid international pressure and humanitarian crisis.

India Welcomes UK's Decision on Chagos Islands Handover

In a landmark diplomatic development, the United Kingdom has agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, including the key military atoll Diego Garcia, to Mauritius.
India has welcomed this decision, reaffirming its long-standing support for Mauritius's legitimate claim based on principles of decolonisation, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The deal signifies a major step toward the resolution of one of the longest-standing colonial-era territorial disputes.
The UK retains responsibility for security arrangements on Diego Garcia under the terms of the agreement.
The deal marks the culmination of a decolonisation process supported by the United Nations General Assembly and International Court of Justice (ICJ).

India Leads Call for Inclusive Energy Governance at BRICS Energy Ministers' Meet in Brazil

Manohar Lal, Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs led the Indian Delegation for the BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting hosted in Brasília under Brazil's Presidency.
The Union Minister highlighted energy security as one of the most pressing current challenges and emphasised the need to strengthen BRICS cooperation to ensure economic stability and sustainability, as well as to promote equitable access to energy resources globally.
The BRICS Energy Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening energy security and advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), focusing on universal electricity access, clean cooking, and tackling energy poverty. They emphasised the need for just, inclusive, and balanced energy transitions in response to climate change.
