India Participates in 2nd Session of IALA Council as Vice President

  • India, as the Vice President of the International Organisation for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA), actively participated in the 2nd Session of the IALA Council, held in Nice, France. The IALA Council is the key decision-making body of the intergovernmental organisation responsible for marine aids to navigation.
  • The Indian delegation was led by T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and included Mukesh Mangal, Joint Secretary, and Karthick Chensudar, Director.

Dr. Srinivas Mukkamala Becomes First Person of Indian Origin to Lead American Medical Association

  • Dr. Srinivas Mukkamala, also known as Bobby Mukkamala, made history by becoming the first Indian-origin president of the American Medical Association (AMA) in its 178-year history.
  • Srinivas Mukkamala, MD, is an Indian-origin otolaryngologist and became the 180th president of the American Medical Association. He is based in Flint, Michigan, and has over 20 years of creative leadership experience in public health and organised medicine.
  • The AMA, founded in 1847, is the largest association of physicians and medical students in the United States.

Rwanda Quits Central African Bloc in Dispute with Congo

  • Rwanda says it is pulling out of a central African regional bloc after a diplomatic row over its involvement in the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • The country was supposed to take up the chairman role of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), which rotates between its 11 members.
  • But it was prevented from doing so at a meeting in Equatorial Guinea.

Polish PM Donald Tusk Wins Confidence Vote

  • Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk won a vote of confidence in his pro-EU government after his political camp narrowly lost the presidential election.
  • Some 243 parliamentarians voted in favour of the coalition government, with 210 voting against and no abstentions.

India Bats for Global Action in Fighting Terrorism during Key East Asia Summit Meeting

  • India called for collective action in addressing the menace of terrorism that poses a serious threat to peace, security and development of the entire region.
  • Addressing the East Asia Summit Senior Officials' Meeting (EAS SOM) in Malaysia's Penang, P. Kumaran, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, underlined the important role of EAS towards promoting free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
  • Kumaran led the Indian delegation at the summit.
  • The EAS is the premier leaders-led forum in the Asia-Pacific. Since its inception in 2005, it has played a significant role in the strategic, geopolitical and economic evolution of East Asia. It comprises 18 participating countries.

Ranked alongside global heavyweights such as the United States, Italy, France, and Japan, the India Pavilion's popularity is based on feedback from Expo officials, Japanese citizens, and online engagement on social media platforms.

Jitendra Singh Leads High-level Indian Delegation at the International Meet on Oceans

  • Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh is leading a high-level Indian delegation at the International Meet on Oceans being held from June 9 to 13 in Nice, France. The high-level international gathering brings together leaders, scientists, policymakers, and civil society actors from across the globe to discuss sustainable ocean governance and concrete actions for the health of the world's oceans.
  • The third edition of the UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, focuses on key themes such as restoring marine ecosystems, reducing marine pollution, promoting ocean-based scientific cooperation, and mobilising resources for the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 14. The conference features 'Ocean Action Panels' involving governments, UN bodies, researchers, industry leaders, and NGOs to forge partnerships and propose practical, scalable solutions.
